I've wanted to do a video about Ankylosing Spondylitis and fibromyalgia for quite some time, but after some fairly harrowing news from the Hospital yesterday, I figured I'd finally get something done.
While I know there are crazy helpful people out there wanting to offer suggestions, CBD oils, Low/no carb diets, Swimming and a bunch of more ways of treating these illnesses more 'holistically' are either how I've coped for as long as I have or have had no effect whatsoever (such as CBD).
This is no-where near as short as I'd have liked it to be, neither does it cover every aspect as I'd have liked, but hopefully it's something that helps someone through inspiration, understanding, or simply the feeling of not being alone.
For those of you that watch the channel, this is also why sometimes my upload schedule is a bit up and down.
One of the reasons I choose Patreon and Paypal.me is to help keep me going through the fog and lack of mobility etc. Your support keeps this dodgy old cripple getting up in the morning, and for that I thank you.
Apologies for using the wrong lens and being a bit out of focus at times.

Thank you to everybody that's watched and to all of you for commenting. I'm humbled to think it's helped as many people as have commented below, as well as the barrage of emails and private messages I've received. I'm sorry I've not replied to everyone, but know that I've read all of your comments, and whether you suffer from illness as well (regardless of the condition), or you know someone that has similar challenges, you're all superstars. Don't let it define you, be strong. Love and respect, Dean, the Vaping Biker

Dean Im an occasional viewer of your channel and found this while poking about looking for something to watch while I sit here too knackered to do anything . I too have fibromyalgia and something with my back as yet undiagnosed ( my discs are starting to degrade and herniate ) ) Im guessing that it will have to get worse before anyone takes a blind bit of notice as usuall ! I am lucky in that I can still work and have a sympathetic work place that will let me do admin on days when I need to sit but 5 hours a day especially now in mid winter when Im at my creekiest boy its taking some doing right now. I am though good at hiding it and only a select few know I have anything, so what I wanted to say was well done to you fella I wouldnt of been able to show that side of myself to a thousand people well done to you.

I'd like to say thank you Dean. My uncle was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis in his early 40's. He is currently 53. He now has multiple spots of spinal fusion, and has walked with a hunch for almost 20 years. As long as i can remember. He has had this disease for a lot of years and recently has just been discovered. Keeping people informed is the MOST important thing. Recently my uncle took a bad fall. Hit his head and managed to have a seizure. Now due to his fall he actually broke his neck, and is paralyzed from the chest down. He is currently in rehab and has just started being able to use his arms and head again. I never knew anything about this disease until this recently happened. And as much as I am sad about the situation, I am glad that you are strong enough to talk about it. You Dean are a fighter. Don't ever stop fighting. You are an inspiration to myself. I wish you well. Thank you for this video

i completely understand Dean. I like you look fine on the outside with my clothes on, but have been thru 13surgeries and all sorts of rehabs. i was in a car wreck that killed my brother driving and the 2 guys in the car that hit us. i was the only survivor. its been 20 years and my body has just detoriated, ive now got 5 ruptured discs and 3 herniated discs as well as being paralyzed. spinal stenosis, degenerative spine disorder, and osteoarthritis. i completely empathize and sympathize with ya my friend. Very big of you to put this out there. i hate talking about whats wrong with me, but if you dont people just think we're normal and unfortunately we have become far from normal physically. i wish you the best.

@sideswipe1261
@sideswipe1261 Жыл бұрын
I recently started year 41 of my 44 years on earth. And it is indeed hell. Even if we’ll intended, so many people are far too uneducated and it gets old extremely fast when someone reads a 1/2 page Reader’s Digest article on Fibromyalgia, then speak to you (often DOWN to you), the actual sufferer. No, eating a salad and going for a jog is not going to fix this. ANY relief is welcome relief, and when opioid haters (because they’ve been told to hate them though again have no real idea what they’re talking about or how they work *without* making any responsible patients “high” at all, just functional enough to CARE about being alive is a tough reality for for ignorant people to wrap their brains around. Methadone has been in SAFE USE for chronic pain relief for over 90 years now. Lyrica, Cymbalta and whatever the other 3rd FDA approved “Fibromyalgia Treatments” are nothing but RENAMED ANTIDEPRESSANTS. Same rules apply, like the LEGALLY REQUIRED SUICIDE WARNING LABELS, extreme weight gain, wreck your organs, kill your soul and are neck-n-neck with PLACEBOS which carry NO side effects, and best of all DO NOT EVEN WORK. Then your doc will up your dose 2-3 times. Then change your medication. Each time requiring you to wait 4-8 weeks to see if it has any benefit (it’s placebo effect, folks. No “Diet/Zero Calorie” beverage has ever been proven to help anybody lose any weight whatsoever- but they’re GREAT IF YOU LOVE CANCER!). “Side-Effects” is a weak attempt to just reword “Direct-Effects” so they don’t sound as nasty (unless you listen closely and read the actual horrible, permanent things like brain damage, permanent spasms/twitches, loss of motor control, severe headaches, induce or worsen arthritis, slash your quality of life, make you gain 80lbs in 4 months or less (stressing the rest of your body’s systems out extremely + begging for diabetes), and of course make you kill yourself (the labels aren’t “watches”, they’re “warnings”. Meaning enough people already have done it BECAUSE they took these “medicines” but would not have if they hadn’t. I’m searching for Ketamine therapy. It can knock out severe chronic pain, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideology, PTSD ALL FOR A FULL MONTH with ONE DOSE, and NOT make you loopy or groggy or compelled to buy glow sticks. All without messing with any autonomous functions like heart/vascular, pulmonary, digestive, kidney or liver functions whatsoever. Safely. Why aren’t more doctors leaping on this treatment? Why not kill 2-5 “therapy resistant” birds with 1 stone vs chugging piles of mixed danger/suicidal pills every day for life only to become more miserable? The science is there. The doctors are dragging their feet (fewer Rx’s written and filled monthly = less $ for docs and BigPharma). But it IS FDA APPROVED!

Dean, thank you for posting this. I took suffer from both fybro and AS, and your video is the only one I’ve come across that describes what I too have to endure on a daily basis. Thankfully I don’t need the assistance of a cane or chair at this time, but this is an unpredictable disease that no one can truly predict the future. I too have a pharmacy of medications that I must take on a daily basis and infusions every six weeks to simply keep me going and alive. I don’t wish for anyone to have to go through what I feel when I open my eyes in the morning and have learnt to embrace what I have and not let it define me as a person or beat me. Sure there are mornings I rather just lay in bed with the covers over my head, sure it takes me close to two hours after awakening to be able to move and get myself to a situation where I can now step out of the bedroom and begin my day, and sure I dread closing my eyes at night because I know when I awaken, I have to go through it all again. But again I don’t let it define or break me! I have found that mountain biking helps to stretch everything out and keep me limber as much as possible: though not taking wicked jumps because I know the pain I have to endure if I take a fall. I am fortunate to be able to ride my bike and if that’s taken away from me, well then I’m not sure at the moment how to handle that. So I’ll ride as long as I am able to and take the massive pain that comes after I cease my activity, but it is a small price that I pay to still keep my whits about me and my optimism despite the anguish and pain. So thank you again for this and keep strong. Do whatever you can for yourself that will keep you going one more day and simply take life, one day at a time! 🤟

I want to thank you so much for opening up and making this video. I personally really needed to see this at this exact moment in time. I have ankylosing spondylitis and fibromyalgia (with some other fun more diseases thrown in). I'm twenty. I was diagnosed with AS officially at about 14 and was officially diagnosed with fibro four months ago. I've just started treatment for my AS again after 4 years of just trying to grin and bear it. I had my first Humira injection today and at first was extremely excited to be in treatment and to get to feeling better until it set in that the medication will take months to begin to work and I've been struggling with that concept. I needed this video to remind me that I've just got to keep working and not let my disabilities overcome me, no matter how much I want to give up. You've helped me so much in this moment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I wish you luck with your continued journey.

You only touch briefly on your channel on the subject of your ailments and tend to make light of it - the explanation helps us understand the compounded issues you face. The fact that you rise to the challenge and win, even if not every time, shows a strength of character you should be very proud of. The content you create really helps others in many ways (you helped me drop the cigs in a big way from your work by explaining the workings of vaping better in your own style) THANK YOU Dean, and I wish you all the strength you need for the future.

Thank you for this eloquent and painful story. I am a trade union lawyer in the United States and have represented a number of union members with your issues. It was very hard to convince the employers that these problems were real and debilitating, especially in the years prior to effective identification and diagnosis. Your video should go viral because of the power of your personal description of the challenge of performing common daily functions. Hurrah for you. I am sure you have touched those of us who do not suffer from your conditions. More importantly, you have provided validation for so many who suffer without recognition or identification. Amazing work. Just truly amazing and inspiring.

Thank you for making a video on this after being a sub of yours for so long i couldn't believe i was so unaware of your situation. You are a very strong man for showing us this and whilst unlike most other commenters in this discussion I am a healthy 24 year old male. I just wanted to say that i aspire to one day be as strong as you. Also as far as nothing else the hospital can do just remember there are over 19,217 other hospitals that can and will.

I'm truly at a loss for words... I've been sitting here staring at my first sentence for nearly 20 minutes in tears. After a long time watching your videos I am only just now aware of your illness and I am dumbfounded. Your cheerful and upbeat nature has brightened my day over and over and now I truly can not wrap my head around how you do it. It makes me a bit ashamed of myself for ever complaining about my day. I will no longer watch your videos simply for vaping advice but now will be watching for inspiration to make the best of every day. Thank you for all that you do and I pray that a treatment or a cure is found for these horrific conditions.

Actually in tears. I really shouldn't have watched this in work. I knew things were difficult. I didn't realise how difficult. I know your health has failed in the time I've known you as I've saw the things you post, the scooter then the wheel chair, the change in personality when you're sore. This is a fantastic thing you've done. I had no idea what these were and this has explained them perfectly. This will be a massive help to anyone suffering from these diseases. In fact not just these diseases. I love you mate.

Wow Dean that was one gutsy video and one that needed to be done and you did it so well as I am used to seeing you do so. I never realised when you made reference to health issues yours were so severe. I can only imagine the help to other fellow suffers that your vid has made and I know that it would have been your primary reason for sharing your situation as knowledge and recognition of these debilitating conditions is so poor. Of all the reviewers of vape gear that I watch I always know that not alone will I get good information from you but always a good laugh and you always seem to be in such humour and long may that continue . I recently had my own health problems which had the potential to be terminal but so far so good and during that time you cannot imagine how many times your vids have cheered me up and all the while you were going though your pain. What can I say other than to wish you all the best, keep on doing what you do so well and never forget that just around the bend there maybe something or someone about to find a solution to your ailments and I soo wish that for you and all.

Man, I really appreciate you doing this vid, because it takes a lot courage to speak out on a subject like this in a public space like youtube. I think a lot of people can relate to this, in one way or another. Many people suffer from some illness that deeply affects their lives, whether it's fibro and AS like you, or something else. Much of the time it may seem like we're like everyone else, just doing well. And other people doubt there's anything wrong, perhaps even say we shouldn't complain. But what they rarely see are the times that whatever we suffer from acts up. The times when that illness really gets to us, puts us down, hurts us, and makes normal life impossible. That's what living with a handicap is like. It's taking medication, living with the pain, and embarrasment. That's the side of us that people can't see, what we sometimes try to hide or downplay, but is very real to us. But you're right. It's not what makes us who we are, we are not our illness. It's how we deal with it that defines us. I really wish your condition will improve, and I hope you keep doing what you do, because what you're doing doesn't just mean something for you. It means something to us as well. Thank you so much for this vid.

Thanks for sharing your story Dean, it's one of the first video's of seen from you come up in my recommended list and im glad I spent the 22 mins watching it. Fibromyalgia is something that is close to myself my mum has been dealing with this since early 2000's. fairly hard to remember when she actually got the diagnosis and even more so when my wife got diagonised with it as well around 8 weeks ago. Although her symptoms are very mild at the moment she has very bad days and i know what the future holds and the difficult path ahead. It can't of been an easy video to make but one I'm glad you did. thank you.

Dean, this was a very touching and inspirational video. I commend you on your bravery and courage to share your story. I know nothing of what you are living with on a daily basis, however, I can empathise with you as I care for my partner who has some mental health issues, and your right, people look at you and and don't / can't understand. All that said, I have been inspired myself, as I too can wake up and question what's the point, so good on you and I WILL get up and have a goal. Please keep up the great work and contribution you are making to the vaping community and others as well. Respect 👍

Thank you so much for sharing Dean, you're an inspiration. Not only to the people suffering from similar disabilities but also to "healthy" people to not take their mobility for granted and to squeeze every last bit out of their lives as long as they possibly can. Dean doesn''t need you to feel sorry for him, he needs you to appreciate what you have and get sh1t done. To overcome whatever obstacles lay between you and what you want to do. Think of that the next time you find yourself f4rting around wasting your time.
