40 plus years for me although not tested in 1988. While I have had no serious illnesses directly related to HIV, much of my life has been in ruins. Living outside of NYC has had some advantages but not without costs. Started meds in 2004 and have felt much better. While physical side of disease under control, the psychological effects less so. Even those medical specialists who should have been of help had little understanding of the impact of my disease. I have had little outside support and have managed better without it.

Kudos to you for being a long term survivor. I recently got detected with HIV. Would you like to share any tip on how to live life post detection to be strong and healthy for a long time. I am just a bit scared of dying early. I have started my medications already,

I was told in 1993 to get my affairs in order and then 2 years later, our hero protease inhibitors came along. I was 26, now I'm 56. I'll forever be grateful and will never forget my late partner and my countless friends who died so young. Thank you God and thank you to the scientist whom worked so diligently. After living 30 years with HIV, my recent heart disease diagnosis felt like a badge of honor. That I lived to an age where heart disease is common.

It depends, some people respond differently to treatment than others as this guy was saying they were on other drugs that weren't working as well. Also I believe that even if you suppress hiv through drugs it saves your immune system, but the virus can still cause nerve damage in some people since that's how hiv hides whenever its losing is in the nervous system.

I thought i had HIV due to having all the symptoms when i was living in the Philippines...I get it .....i was not mad at the person who i thought gave it to me because no one put a gun to my head and made me have unsafe sex...turned out i got some type of virus in the tropics that had same symptoms, i even had a 250 t cell count.....i am done with dangerous sex, but it was hard to stop my addiction...
