All new homes in California will now be built with fire sprinklers. To answer people's questions California State Fire Marshal Tonya Hoover explains how sprinklers work and how easy they are to maintain. Video provided courtesy of the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition HomeFireSprinkler.org.

Great video, I was a building engineer for 30 years and we did fire system test annually. It was interesting how people believed movies when it came to sprinklers and we had to explain that it would cause more damage if the sprinklers on another floor went off when there was no fire there. Thank you so much for explaining this so clearly and concisely.

Sprinkler protection should be mandated for ALL new residential construction. It saves money, reduces damage from water, and reduces insurance premiums.

Things that are needed. In existing homes, a dry system installed in the ceiling of the top floor with a supply coming off of an upstairs bathroom. A wall mounted system for the first floor that can be slid up inside the walls of a room from the basement to a small hole toward the top of the wall. For any structure, a timing system that will shut off the flow in a set number of seconds and keep it off unless the temperature rises again. This will prevent unnecessary water damage. There should be different or adjustable nozzles based on the furnishings inside any given room so the pattern will be the most effective.

@demo man from my code book (i am a licensed sprinkler fitter and do classes for all updated codes,and revisions of codes ) it reads that any piping that can or will be subjected to any freezing temperature must either be a dry system or antifreeze i.e. glycol or glycerine.i live and work in ohio so we see this frequently with freezing temps and people laying insulation over pipe or heat tape.And we go through and point it out to the customer in nfpa.

You can't beat the safety. I am a retired fire inspector and trust me, if there is ever a fire in your house, which is more common than you may realize, this is the way to go. Think of it this way. If you are in a home without fire sprinklers, and a fire occurs, NOTHING is there to put out the fire and you need to get out somehow around the fire. Meanwhile, the fire continues to grow until the fire fighters arrive, which can take up to 15 minutes if you are far away from a fire department or all local departments are super busy at that time. This puts out the fire very quickly, with minimal water damage, whereas the fire fighter hoses will spray in huge amounts of water, damaging everything in their path.

Oh please. The only way that Fire Sprinklers would work in that London fire was if the building had been engineered for the correct flow and the correct booster pumps installed to keep the pressure up on the upper floors. The twin towers were al sprinkled on 9/11/01. They didn't put the fires out because the booster pumps failed to keep the water pressure up. And if something happens to the electricity, the pumps don't come on. Its just something else that you pay big bucks that cost even more bucks when they schytte the bed.

Soo.."the only way that Fire Sprinklers would work in that London fire was if the building had been engineered for the correct flow and the correct booster pumps installed to keep the pressure up on the upper floors" Try reading NFPA 20 its the standard for stationary pumps for fire protection. It will tell you exactly how to size the fire pump so you can meet full system demand in any part of any building. If you knew anything about sprinklers you would know they are designed for a fire that starts in a building in one room and for a specific hazard most likely "light hazard" as they were offices. when the plane crashed into the building it most likely set hundreds of heads off sheared off risers that fed the systems and contained jet fuel which would be an "extra high hazard" which on most cases would require a foam system which are found in air craft hangers not office buildings! Chris Gordon you have no idea what your talking about.

When the valve is shut too fast the water flow comes to a dead stop causing like a shock wave through the system and can cause damages if the pressures great enough .That's the "bang" you hear after shuting off water in a fast manner.

That was a great video I hope that she was paid very well however. What was not brought up was the real possibility of a fire sprinkler system failing in your home. I am recently witness the results of CPVC pipe failure in a home. The damage is approaching 1/2 million dollars. This is a well constructed house with lots of sheet rock and lots of fire the smoke dectors. There is really no real safety checking that could be done with these CPVC systems. Home owner be wear.
@wesleyhurd3574
@wesleyhurd3574 6 жыл бұрын
Ed Shelden Residential fire sprinklers preferably should be connected to an alarm system that is tied in with a central monitoring station. That may not be required but it is a good idea. At a minimum, there should be a bell that sounds when water flows in the sprinkler system. Undetected water leaks from any type of piping or plumbing fixture can potentially cause massive water damage unless someone is alerted to the problem immediately. I think that if the sprinklers are mandated by code, then an alerting device should be part of that mandate.
@joeydrapeau1861
@joeydrapeau1861 6 жыл бұрын
There are ways to safety check these systems. if you hired a licensed installer the system should have been tested to 200 PSI to check for any system failures before the house was finished.

A common issue that is not finally starting to get some attention is the reaction of cpvc pipes that have been in contact with flexible wires that contain plasticizer. The chemicals in the wire jacket that allow it to be soft and pliable have a chemical reaction with cpvc pipe that causes it to crack and fail under pressure. Saying things like, 'buyer beware when installing sprinklers' is ridiculous thinking and is no different than saying 'buyer beware when installing plumbing. Pipes could fail and damage your house'

More like the plastic pipe and fittings manufacturers in action. Try taking a 50 degree anti-freeze solution and put it in the freezer. It freezes to slush. Water won't flow. You need approved backflow valves. It has to be properly sized for the load. If you have a 3/4" Poly Water Service, it will NOT ever handle a fire sprinkler. If you put Anti=Freeze in a potable water system, it must be separated with a backflow. Even the Non-Toxic stuff.

@fitter5426
@fitter5426 8 жыл бұрын
Your wrong about that. I'm in the sprinklerfitters Union in Pittsburgh and yes you can insulate wet systems in an area subject to freezing whether it be residential or commercial. The job I'm on now has our 8 and 6 inch main feeds running through a parking garage from the curb and there all insulated until they hit the stairwell to feed the standpipe. So I beg the differ on that one. Also on another note. You can throw that nfpa 13 book out the window in some jurisdictions cause the ahj has the ultimate say so no matter what nfpa says.

watch out, you can be all for anything but you forget that there is consequences or pro and con's to each situation. In a multi-family home, yes it should be considered since people can be careless with fire and appliances. In a single family home, it should be left up to the home owner who wants such a system because not everyone can afford to upkeep these systems when they break, they cost a lot upfront and repairs can cost a ton to meet existing code changes. Its a nice necessity but insurance will cover the damages from a fire including water damage. Life can't be replaced but it should be left up to the home owner because you have to value people wishes in a free society even if they go against the community ideals along as its not breaking the law.
