Living Big In A Tiny House

Күн бұрын

If you're living in a big city and watching your income fade away into a giant black hole of rent, then this story is for you! This week we meet Lizzie and Patrick, an inspiring young couple who built their very own, incredible tiny house for the equivalent cost of just one years rent in London city!
And the home is beautiful too. Stunningly designed and easily accommodating the couples needs, this home has provided both Lizzie and Patrick with a lot more than just a secure roof over their heads. It's also given them the ability to save money and focus on the things that are truly important to them in life.
We hope you enjoy the full tour of this couple’s amazing DIY tiny house!

With the cost of living in the UK (and around the globe) at astounding highs, I'm sure there are many people out there who love the idea of giving up a years worth of city rent in exchange for building their own dream tiny house! Lizzie and Patrick are an inspiring young couple who have built a truly impressive home for a remarkable budget and we hope you enjoy visiting their home as much as we did! This episode kicks off the start of a series of videos we've filmed in the UK. The tiny house movement has significantly grown since we were last here and it's so exciting to share our new discoveries with you. There are some real treasures in this series! With Love, Bryce & Rasa

I look forward to seeing the videos of uk tiny houses, we nearly took the plunge but unfortunately local planning rules stopped us and most people seem to be on the edge of legality to live in a tiny house, yet it is so sad as it would make such a difference to so many who either can't afford or don't need a full size house.

So good to see more of these videos in the UK again! The regulations here just don''t support tiny houses, they have to be "caravans", and you can't get mortgages for them as far as I know, so you have to either save like crazy in this economic climate or be fairly well off to begin with. Would love to hear more from any other UK participants on how they got around this.

Exactly UK laws are not welcoming for tiny houses. For example you can only use the Tiny House as ‘additional living space’ and not a stand-alone dwelling! So you basically need a house with land to park it on. Than there is size restrictions and weight restriction.

Things are just starting to improve here in Canada. In the London (Ontario) where I live they have just changed city by-laws to allow people to add a dwelling of up to 10% of the area of the property, which does start to allow for small tiny houses on larger lots. I just read that the other by-law that needs amending is the restriction of only allowing up to 5 bedrooms on each property. If the original home has 4 bedrooms (not unusual in the larger properties), that only allows for a single bedroom tiny house. The article I read was about homeowners who wanted to build a 2 bedroom tiny home and convert the garage to another with 1 bedroom - both of these additional dwellings would be for grown children who are finding the current housing market unreachable in either rentals or entry level homes. Because the original home already has 4 bedrooms, so they would have to get a variance to build - something that takes time and money. They are hoping the fact that it is "all in the family." might help.

Interesting. As a Londoner paying extortionate rent, this is relevant to me. Unfortunately, most people don't have family with extensive land to park a caravan / tiny house. And presumably a convenient nearby house to do laundry and store food -- no fridge or washing machine visible here? People need homes close to transport hubs, jobs, amenities etc, This channel doesn't ever explore the systemic issues affecting people's housing options. It's not as simple as exchanging a year's rent for a tiny house -- these folks must've benefited from family help during and after their build. Generational wealth, or the lack thereof, is an obstacle to many ordinary people,

I was starting to wonder how much of a steal this was if your parents didn't have land to park it on. The static caravan site nearest to me when I was in the UK was a good 3km from the nearest railway station, 1.5km from anything other than a corner shop. As much as I love these tiny houses, they're a diversion from tackling the fundamental issues in UK housing.

@@RossHall-UK I live in Australia (I also lived in the UK for many years) - it is ridiculous that Australia also has a housing crisis. I've lost touch with what's happening in the UK but in Australia, some State Premiers seem to be hellbent on making the situation worse.

I’m sure we’d all be able to build something and put in the hard work if we had parents with a massive detached house in Oxfordshire with land and outbuildings. Would love to see some more variation in the types of places being visited and different stories for the people who’ve managed to achieve this lifestyle. It seems as if it’s currently unavailable to anyone without the land their parents give them. No hate on the couple they’ve built a lovely place for themselves, but for many who are stuck paying unaffordable rents this is a pipe dream.

As you said. I end up feeling disappointed way too often after watching these videos. I’m happy for them, but for most it’s a luxury to build a house like this. I could own my dream tiny home but where would I put it when land is unaffordable? Not everyone can set up camp in mom’s backyard.
@ashley-dt2di

@@rinber13it is disappointing. I watch these videos for inspiration and for the life I want. And every time they say they’re down the bottom of their parents land it’s getting further and further away. My parents are working class and live in a terrace house. Even if I saved up a deposit for a mortgage and wanted to spend it building a tiny house instead.. where would I park it. Unless I asked around and I was lucky enough to come across someone with land where I could build and then park it it’s not achievable. Feels like something only rich kids can do. I want a simple life and I can’t have it and feel stuck in the system. The videos have gone from feeling like an amazing escape to a punch in the face.

I wish we could build something like these for the homeless. Our state government has built about 100 really ugly homes for 55 thousand each for the homeless. But in my city, we have thousands of homeless. No exaggeration. They are literally camped on the sidewalks and in the downtown area. You cannot go anywhere without seeing them. Our city is not providing porta potties or garbage collection. It's a big, horrible, unhygienic mess. @@PazLeBon

Lovely design! I've always loved shepherd hut style, and seeing it scaled up to a full size tiny home is really inspiring. But I always come back to the same thing... in most countries there are the same challenges for would be tiny home builders. We need better, more flexible, regulations to allow more people to build their own tiny homes, more build spaces, and also publicly owned land assigned for tiny house communities, where people can rent a space for a low cost, so that couples and families without land-owning parents can also self build their own homes.

Yeah, some parents like to will or furnish property to their kids because they love them. In some pockets of Mexican culture when the kids are grown the parents give them the house and move to a smaller abode. Not everyone kicks them out at 18 and says "You're on your own, bud." We're not that far away from multi-generational housing.

I've re-watched many, many of the videos and love them as much the 2nd (ok, sometimes the 3rd) time around. And I just looked at the number of subscribers---over 4.5 MILLION! YES! Congrats Bryce and Rasa.

Her art is such high quality and originality that one would expect her to be able to live on that alone. Unfortunately our societies do not value art as much as i think we ought. Their house is wonderful and i am going to pilfer some of their great ideas. Thank you everyone!

What a fantastic result for the cost of the house, building yourself like that has challenges but is so rewarding.

Beautiful tiny home. The thing is they’re fortunate their parents ( Lizzie parents) have allowed them to live on the land for free. No need to buy, lease or get permission, so that is a big help.

So nice seeing a proper tiny home made with a proper tiny budget again, just like it was when this channel first started.

Gorgeous! and inspiring to see a U.K Tiny. I desperately want to live this way but if you do not have family or friends with land the cost of land and regulations are still unattainable for most in the UK :(

As usual the couple have the benefit of parking their home in their parents garden! Can we have more videos of tiny homes of less privileged people please.

I think it’s so great that tiny house living in many ways boils down to connection with the things that matter most, family, financial freedom, a future with possibilities to continue to dream. Lovely garden and lovely people. Lovely art and pulley building too!

Hey Andy! We are still here! Just on the tail end of our trip now though. It’s been a wonderful time and we will certainly aim to be back again next year. There’s a lot happening here in tiny house world! Which part of the UK are you in?

@@livingbig we are in the New Forest on the south coast. A beautiful area but a lot of restrictions for tiny homes as it's a protected national park.. lots of.wildlife around though. It's great to see you out and travelling again though. Safe journey home!

It's all fine and dandy if you have mummy and daddy with big enough garden to park it on. Otherwise tiny house in UK is a pain with UK laws. Judging by the size of the parents house though they could literally live there (I mean it's huge by UK standards) and just build a garden office (which in a way a tiny house is).

A sewage bathroom is a must for me. And not a crawling bedroom.True minimize, but still maintain the regular wash ,clean and go for a peace of mind and semblance of regular house.

Mentioned in passing that the build stands in the garden of a parent. A year's rent in London is not really the story is it?

Lovely home. And as with many others on a beautifull piece of land. To me this is more what i consider a "Tiny house". With all the bigger and also beautifull ones out there. Love your channel.

This is so spacious the way they the floor plan is laid out. This would be a good match for a retired couple, if you added a bedroom to the lower level. Their cost was amazing, very affordable.
