Ep 366 - Those who have invested time and money in this country will back me up on this... It costs more than you think to keep things shiny and new here in the Philippines! Eleven years after moving into our new house, the maintenance costs are rising... and it's not because of inflation!
We're living a tropical island lifestyle from the Philippines to Guam. Come along as we travel back and forth sharing slices of life from the 🌴 Tropic Shade.™ I've spent over 19 years living in the Far East and the Western Pacific and I still have a firm grip on that spirit of adventure. No place can be called Paradise without the Beaches, Rainbows, Waterfalls, Fiestas, Sunsets, and Happy & Friendly Peoples! #paradise #guam #philippines
🌴 We were once "Retired in Samar" but we are now "Living in the Pacific."

Many good points Randy. Some expats have a cheaper house in the "province" but rarely include maintenance in their cost of living.

I know that some renters are responsible for certain maintenance as part of their lease agreement. Some are even required to provide their own AC units and water heaters.

That is the case with stock motorcycles too. Simple parts on a Yamaha, Honda etc are often hard to find at the dealership. Having to pay up front for them to order a part that can be weeks to be delivered on our Island. I typically go for 3rd party parts just because they are much more common. So far that hasn't caused any issues.

Hi Randy Hope all is well missed you on my Guam trip beginning of June. Saw you were in Phils. Yes agree maintenance is needed. Been 13 yrs on our house in gensan no the make over is running 600k peso Full CR, paneling main room with a new A/C unit remodel kitchen, laundry, an adding garage gate. Some new shelving. But compared to Guam or USA prices it's a bargain. Labor costs have gone up some but over all ok. You take care another good video

Khiings just seemed to be more responsive and proactive... and they carry a variety of parts in stock. Prulab, not so much -- they sort of burned me on those shocks. Another thing I realized - all those abandoned cars on the Prulab lot... are they cars that Prulab couldn't fix?

@@TropicShade actually yes i think they are. There is only one "mechanic" there. He is from Allen originally . he had told me he never went to school to be a mechanic. Just him and his father tinkered on them. The others there at prulab follow his direction.

it's unfortunate the Philippines don't have manufacturing plants since the Filipinos are skilled craftsman. I have a couple filipino 1911s that are great pistols.

Anything new in the Philippines, doesn’t stay new very long . Stayed at the Ciriaco about 5 years ago , and it was dropping to bits then . The swimming pool was full of green algae .

Great video and good info Randy. I'm in the process of looking into building /renovating in the Calbayog area, on that what would you suggest? New build or existing house renovation? I'm an ex builder and to say I'm a wee bit surprised as to some of the techniques used over there. I mainly did formwork on multistorey carparks in and around London so I do understand there's a vast difference. Is it best to let the local builders do it their way with just minimal input?
@TropicShade
@TropicShade 28 күн бұрын
I would chose to build first, that way you have more control on the finished product. When renovating, you never know what you will get yourself into... unless it's a great spot with space. Local building customs are just fine, as long as you are holding the reigns.

@TropicShade That's a lot of money for an average Pinoy to part with. I buy the gallon home defense pesticide here at Lowes, I bet the same cost double in Philippines, if purchased at ACE hardware. The dispenser cost way more there too. I wonder if they sell local pesticides for roaches and bugs there cheaper.
