I'm an American who lived in Serbia during the late '90s, and in my experience the Serbs tend to break down into one of two types of people: they were either incredibly friendly and would happily share their last bowl of soup with you or they were secret police/army and some of the scariest psychopaths you'd ever meet. In either case they tended to be extremely knowledgeable about their history, I remember asking one of our embassy drivers "What's the story of that castle?" I was expecting a quick little response, instead he begins by saying "It all started 500 years ago when the Turk invaded..." While I was not prepared for such a lengthy answer at the time, I definitely believe that the Serbs helped instill my love of history.

There seem to be a lot of down-low gay men there, too... or the types who marry women, go to Church festivals, have kids, but cruise with pretty boys and young men on the side. A lot of them seem very proud of it, especially the rich ones and the musicians. I fell down a rabbit hole following a musical group from there that came to my country, and was kind of shocked when I realized how many masculine-looking men from there were openly gay and flaunting their male lovers in front of their wives and kids. Oh, and a lot of them joke that "hens are for the parish, cocks are for vacation", as if it's normal for married "straight" men to sleep with young male prostitutes when they go on vacation.

As someone from Merica, I know little of the Balkans, but I have a stolen story. So this Army recruiter comes to our high school, and he yammers on about the army, and someone asks him about stories from where he was stationed, and at one point, he was stationed in Macedonia, and he and his crew were given r&r, so they went off to explore the place they were at right? Well one of the first things they discovered, was that a US servicemen’s salary translates quite well into Macedonian currency, so they rented a hotel room normally reserved for literal diplomats, and spent most of their time there just drinking and partying, and came back to the base at the end having spent less money in a week then they would have if they had just stayed on base. They net profited from partying in the Balkans. That’s all I have, y'all have a good one!

I like to think I had a very unique perspective of the situation as I was very much an outcast in that I was from a Dutch family, so I didn’t have the choice to keep segregated, I had no choice, I had to interact with everyone. It was also weird because growing up I was one of the few kids in my grade who was actually born in Canada, yet I was the odd ball, the misfit amongst my peers. There is actually a pretty easy explanation to the stereotype of Bosnians being stupid. My great-grandfather was born while Bosnia was still "technically" part of the Ottoman Empire, so he was schooled in alhamijado writing, writing our language with the arabic script, using arabic letters to represent single sounds pretty much like the Latin or Cyrillic alphabet does. During his life, he went from Ottoman school kid to Austro-Hungarian Jäger to being a train conductor in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia to a pensioner in Commie Yugoslavia. Even though he spoke 3 languages and knew how to write in 3 different fucking scripts, he pretty much did not know any well. Oh, and obviously as Muslims, pretty much none of our grannies went to more than 4 grades in school, leaving many of them literally illiterate. I still remember this 90something year old woman signing a document with an X, as she did not know how to write, as her dad did not consider schooling girls of any importance. So yeah, kind of explains it. :D

Interesting tidbit: In Norwegian, and many other germanic languages, the word krabat, which now means boisterous but cute child, used to mean people who make Attilla look tame, due to Tilly's use of Croat troops in the 30 years war. It's also where the word Cravat (a type of neck tie for dandies) is from.

You had to become a beast if you wanted to survive among other beast..! Had those terrible , "barbaric" Croats not been there, today most of Europe probably would be speaking turkish, eat ONLY kebab and wear turban instead of cravats ( by the way, cravat was invented by Croats and spread all over Europe in the 30 years war, hence the word !).. 🇭🇷👹😊🌍🌞

Stereotype about Croatians as bootlickers (or sometimes as "Austrian hostlers") was coined by Serbs. It stems from the fact that Croatia was a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Reign of the House of Habsburg brought many improvements, made a big cultural impact and actually built Croatia in those times. Even today, there are roads and buildings made by Habsburg monarchy, which are still in use. But, under the reign of the A-H empire, the fact is that Croatian people of the time were recognized as a constitutional nation. And that right was earned during wars against the Ottoman expansion toward Croatia and further toward Central Europe, when Croatians fought and bled heavily in order to stop Ottoman's progress and to keep their cultural heritage... which they've actually succeeded, as opposed to other Balkan nations/countries, which were for centuries entirely occupied by the Ottomans. And that's one of the biggest reasons why Croatia and Slovenia are culturally different from their eastern neighbors, and why their cultural heritage is more aligned with the western civilization. The other big reason is acceptance of the Catholic church (lead by the Roman Pope), after the division of the Christian church into Catholic and Orthodox (so called the great Schism of 1054. AD).

The monkey thing for Macedonia started as a barebone insult from the greek and greek aligned views, initially it was received fiercely to a point of physical and insulting combat however it was simmered down over the years because the ultras/supporters for the football team from Prilep blatantly call themselves "Majmuni" or monkeys. So it stopped having that initial derogatory meaning where there is no need to aggressively respond to it. Just a little info dump.

I thought I knew what a "hot summer" was. But first summer I spent in Split, Dalmatia it was shocking, as early as 9:30 in the morning the sun was unbearable. You just can't expect people to work outside the shade under those conditions. I think this is very similar to "lazy" Mexicans sleeping under sombrero shade stereotype.

The funny thing about Haso is that he’s a foreign fabrication. As a Serb from Sarajevo, I can tell you with 100% certainty that Mujo’s sidekick is Suljo. Haso was, as my dad put it, created by Serbians who didn’t know that Suljo existed but sometimes needed multiple Bosnians in their jokes.

I didn't know about Slovenians being portrayed as femboys and I think it's as random as it can be. Probably due to the lack of real stereotypes and ignorance of history. I'll just give you a few historical facts from the last 100 years. After the first world war, the German municipal council declared Maribor to be part of German Austria (a country x23 bigger than Slovenia and much more powerful). Slovenians declared Maribor to be part of back SHS and stormed Carinthia (Koroška) with only 4000 men. In WW2 Slovenians were attacked from all three sides (Italy, Hungary, and Third Reich) and yet resisted until the arrival of the Red Army. In 1941 Ivan Hribar, the then mayor of Ljubljana committed suicide (shot himself in the head) rather than officially surrendering Ljubljana to the Italians. And lastly, though the Yugo war in Slovenia lasted for only 10 days (due to the homogeneity of the nation - because there were no Serbian minorities) no one expected it would last only 10 days. And even though the Slovenes betrayed the Yugoslavs in Serbian eyes at the time, I think it's fair to say that Slovenians had the balls to leave the congress and be ready to fight for their own homeland against a much bigger and stronger country (Yugoslavia). As for the language, I always thought Serbo-Croatian sounded softer and much more melodic. Slovenian is relatively similar to Czech and Slovak whose vocabularies have been extensively influenced by Latin and German as opposed to southern Serbian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, ... was influenced by the Ottomans. Anyways, not that most of you care but I wanted to share this. Slava Slovanom!

On the flip side to the Slovenia not being under Ottoman rule (much): the 3 times the Turks tried to invade Austria with the Sultan at the helm (Siege of Vienna doesn't count, prime minister went rogue there) 2 times going through Slovenia broke the advance and ended in a route one way or another. Mind both times they experienced summer rains in Dolenjska, which for those who don't know the forests are a coinflip of regular forest & concealed bogland, uneavewn terrain and general river silliness like the Krka river carving a ditch where it flows meant the camels got sick and died off & the bronze canons were lost in various ways.

WAIT...WHY DID THE OTTOMAN USED CAMELS TO TRANSPORT THEIR CANNON? I THOUGHT THEY USED OX EN AND HORSES JUST LIKE ANY OTHER EUROPEAN. EVEN THE ARABS USED HORSES AND NOT CAMEL FOR THAT PURPOSE LOL. CAMEL AREN'T SUITED OR NATIVE TO ANATOLIA LET ALONE THE BALKAN, THEY CAN'T EVEN WALK THERE CUZ THEIR FEET ARE DESIGN FOR SAND NOT HARD SURFACE OR FOREST.

@@wewenang5167 i never said that, they took camels to drive the opposing army's horses mad making cavalry charges impossible. Horses need to be climatized to camel scent to be calm. So in a way both times their cheese tactics were nulled and all that was left was good military. With gunpowder wet and cavalry being a threat, well they were having a hard time, on top of being cold and wet.
