“Life... music and what I do... has to be intermixed, has to be together... or else I feel like I’m not alive.”
In an unusually intimate portrait, young piano superstar Yuja Wang speaks of her life and work, demonstrating by musical examples throughout-including a staggering and delightful rendition of an Art Tatum arrangement of “Tea for Two.” She describes her musical aspirations in contrast with audience perceptions, the value of practicing and not practicing, learning and relearning a piece, and the importance of struggle for musical results. She ends the interview with a touching tribute to the late Claudio Abbado.

Having lived in China (Beijing) for over a decade, I met her by accident, because a friend of mine studied at the conservatory. She was and is a very charming and open person, very skilled, very determined in a natural way. I love her as a person and wish her All the Very Best, always.

The other day I shared my thought with a much older man and we kind of both agreed on how honest her performances were, and I feel that I will be able to touch the true implications or whatever true feelings, motivations, or reasonings in old masters' minds, just from listening to her playing. This is the first time since then that I've stumbled upon another use of the "honest" word about Yuja Wang, so I got excited and these words jus flown out.

I adore her personality. Clearly she struggles to be 'just a regular person', with a flair for LV shoes! But she comes across as one...who happens to be famous. I find it hard to say what I like about her specifically, but only because there is so much. When she arrives on stage I'm glued to her beauty. When she plays, I'm glued to her fingers and pedals. When she speaks, I'm all ears. What a delightful person!!

It's wonderful that someone like YUJA WANG can be alive in my life time and show me how diversified a classical pianist can be. I'd love to play piano duets with her if ever we had the chance. I've been playing piano for 65 years of my 69 years and find music a place to relax, to pass the time, to enjoy all types of piano music and to share music with others. It's not for everyone, but the gift stays with you all your life. I hope Yuja Wang continues to show off her obvious talent for many years yet,, and to give the world this special type of music. Enjoy your life, Yuja. And someone will relish you when you're ready to share your life with that person. Thanks for your music!!!

4:55 I don’t understand how any human being is capable of maintaining works of such incredible difficulty and length without even physically practicing it. I also think that Yuja’s perspective on pianism and music in general is very very inspiring and refreshing. She is a miracle to both music and the world.

You either have it or you don’t. And most of us don’t.
@gpapa31
@gpapa31 Жыл бұрын
@@pjbpiano sorry but that’s not true. Yes, talent is important but 99% of the cases (save 1% for that ultra genius) those people are a result of incredible hard work from a very very young age. We are talking about insane amount of studying and practicing to reach that level, that’s all they do. The “not practicing” part mentioned here comes after decades of honing her skills (physical and muscle memory) to such a ridiculous level that now makes something like a Prokofiev 2nd Piano Concerto that you and I find impossible to fathom, natural for her to learn. So yes talent is important (not gonna lie here) but what you give (time, studying, practice, sacrifices etc) is always what you get out.
@pjbpiano
@pjbpiano Жыл бұрын
@@gpapa31 you might not believe this, but it’s not practice that will get you to her level. You need to have certain biological advantages first of all. People that do not have very strong muscle memory in addition to mental memory cannot reach this level. I have a friend that once he studies a piece, he will always be able to recall it-no matter how many years pass by. If he needs to perform it, all he would need is a few days to put the piece back in shape. I believe all concert pianists have this ability. If you are someone that just after a few weeks of studying a piece, you cannot physically or mentally recall it, you will not reach Yuja Wang’s level. Also, there are people whom technique is intuitive to them. If you’re not one of those people, you will become a great pianist if you practice all the right moves, but there are some things you will never be able to do. Yuja has all the prerequisites. Mere mortals do not. Let’s not reduce everything to mere practice because in that case, everyone that went to conservatory would be the next Yuja.
@gpapa31
@gpapa31 Жыл бұрын
@@pjbpiano I have an incline of what you’re saying and yes that is something that would apply to someone like Wang but the reason (apart from the great talent) is that she started doing this at a very very young age. Talent is something that is genetically inherited and there’s no doubt genes are important. Genes are the blueprint of life. But in fact even when the blueprint isn’t great, if a child grows up in a nurturing environment it’ll have a positive impact on brain development. Attentive parenting and proper kids brain nutrition are fundamental factors for brain development & focus especially in the early stages. After all our bodies (especially our brain) doesn’t stop developing at birth. Especially the Sensorimotor stage (0-2 years old) and Preoperational stage (2-7 years old) are the key phases of cognitive development and when the foundations of our muscle memory snd ability to analyse and memorise/absorb data, that become second nature, is formed. This is why kids that start learning multiple languages at that point become bilingual/trilingual etc. This is one of the main reasons that most concert pianists start before the age of 5-6. It’s key to their ability to gain a mental set of skillset that for the rest of us seam superficial. Wang is not the first or the last musician I’ve known, or even met, that is capable of memorising and improvising long pieces by memory. She maybe better than others yes, but it’s not a supernatural talent and something that cannot be developed by a normal human being with the correct up bringing, hard work and dedication if start really early.
@pjbpiano
@pjbpiano Жыл бұрын
@@gpapa31 and at this point, we are saying the same things. Notice I never used “talent” or “gifted” in any of my statements because I think those would be reserved for the artistry. I wouldn’t call anyone with a good memory talented. I wouldn’t call anyone with a knack for proper finger usage talented. But I would say some that naturally has these two things without having to practice them for many weeks or months is most likely to be a top tier player as compared to someone that has to learn technique. How they got it is irrelevant at this point. Which is why I said at first: It’s either you got it or you don’t. And Yuja got it. Telling people that if they practiced, they could be like her is one of the biggest lies ever told in the piano teaching profession.

@@TheGreatPerahia Yuja always seems nervous when she is interviewed. She is an awesome talent, highly intelligent, physically attractive and with a great sense of humour, but she really cares what people think. That is one reason why I admire her willingness to innovate and push the boundaries. For someone like Yuja, that is a frightening thing to do. Trying to create something new is not always going to be successful. Even when something new is great, some are bound to criticise. See, for instance, her latest attempt to fight stereotypes of Asian women performers through her musical satire with Iggudesman and Joo. Some critics were deeply offended, but it was an attempt to do something truly meaningful.

That was an L.A. critic, and she would"give a shit" about what he wrote if it had been complimentary. Her sometimes vulgar language is often on the same level as her tawdry stage attire. Ms. Wang should keep in mind that there are a lot of girls (especially Asian music students) who look up to her as a role model and she certainly should care about that.

The only thing I would say in response is - for many young heterosexual males seeing an attractive young woman such as Yuga Wang wearing a micro mini skirt with spikey high heels on stage is undeniably distracting, however great the playing. Attention should not be diverted in such a way from what should be a rewarding experience hearing a great masterwork brilliantly performed. An elegant gown would add to the occasion visually without looking inappropriately vampish.

Im sure she realizes that young girls look up to her and care about it. I think thats why her choice in wearing something she feels comfortable in is all the better.. It tells girls they can express themselves and don't need to give about a fuck about what boring, prude, tired ass people, in the classical community think. Thank god for once someone is breaking the rules a bit. Some people in the classical community need to lighten the fuck up. At the end of the day its about sharing the experience of music.

I totally relate to what she says about practicing. For me too, the very first time I perform something is better than any subsequent time.

I like her very much! Lucky I met her once in a Conservatory in the City. She is not only a famous Chinese Pianist who live on stage, but also a very nice and sweet girl who lives in real life.

Had the pleasure of listening to her and the Concertgebouw with Mariss Jansons in Shostakovitjs first. What an evening in Amsterdam:-)
