***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Kevin I’m an accountant so I understand the nerdy garden math. I love it!! So happy Sarah has her herb garden. Please be praying for me as I recently lost my sweet husband of 33 years to ALS. My garden is the therapy that has kept me going the last month. I love watching you guys as you remind me of me and my husband over the years. God bless you.

I have a suggestion for one of your herb beds. Erect 3 posts in a triangle shape so you can put up a shade sail if it gets to hot for herbs such as cilantro, parsley etc. not sure if it'll help because it gets so hot there. You can stash it away when not needed. My husband installed XL old mailboxes in my 3 separate garden areas & painted them pretty colors. I stash things in there (ie small garden tools, twine, scissors) . Each mailbox has its own set of items. It's very convenient to keep things close by.

I did something similar but followed MiGardener method of layering straw/hay about half way up the bed and then topping with soil. The hay acts as a sponge and cuts down on watering needs. Veg roots are fairly shallow and don’t seem need 24 inches of soil.

Like canning jars, you can figure it in how many uses or how many years until your break even on your product. From there, it's all dollar (not necessarily labor) savings. In that vein, it depends upon what you actually grow and comparative grocery or retail cost; and do you compare to Now $1.25 Store, bulk, or bottled organic product. Because its so late in the year and using a medium price guage, im guessing they could break even by the end of next year between harvest and soil; maybe sooner.

I planted some sedums and day lilies and hostas in it as they were all came from a spring time divide. They didn’t do much growing the first year but the following year the garden looked like it established itself and over grew to be divided once again on its 3rd year. It’s still crazy after 9 years

We've had similar situation with grasshoppers invation many years ago. We're in CA and that year was really dry and hot and we could hear them jumping and chomping at the plants and even dead weeds. My mother-in-law visited us for the first time...and the last time. She was creeped out by the jumping grasshoppers in the front door. Lately, our challenge is squirrels, mice, and earwigs.

I remember when I was very little helping my grandfather fill up raised beds once. His process was a little different like you. He used several different types of soil in Ireland. We’re lucky enough to have that type of Pete which we get from the bogs which we add to our soil we’d also harvest seaweed he’d have all his grandkids going down cutting it off at the right place so it would grow back again dry it out and add it to his mix. He used to take the top soil, Pete, compost, seaweed and couple of handfuls of pea gravel throw it all into an old concrete mixer. Let it turn up for a little bit, adding a cup of water and then pouring it out into a wheelbarrow, and then we would shovel it into the raised beds. Similar but different. I tell you that soil it was able to grow anything.

Sarah, and Kevin, I have to say I've followed y'all for a while now, and love these garden beds. Over the years we've used wood to make our garden beds. We've used fire (Japanese way known as yakisugi) to preserve our wood before planting. It's been almost 6 years, and some of the beds are starting to show improvement is needed. My husband, and I decided to make the investment. We're slowly purchasing these same metal beds in hopes of having all the materials in the next year or so to replace all the wood. We need to make things easier to work with since were getting older.

Beautiful garden. After the hurricane came through here is south central Texas, I need to go back out and re-assess the garden. We were on the dirty side of the eyewall that passed just few miles away, so we got tossed a bit. Looks like the tomatoes need to be tied back up and possibly trimmed. Cages holding the peppers fell over, too. And lots of rain, so the weeds have taken off. Squash is a goner. But no major damage, so we are thankful for that. And power is back on, so I have my water well and AC. May only be in low 90's but with 80-90% humidity, it's like a sauna out there. Still recovering from surgery in June, so it's a little at a time.

Filling multiple raised beds similar to yours over the years. $600 is truly a fair price. Even with my (8) 3ftx4ftx12inch beds. I probably spent $200 on a good quality soil. And I even topped all of the beds off with 3 inches of my own compost from my leaf waste (which is free). So..Menards was a good deal for you.. 👍

I picked up some mushroom compost and other organic compost from one of the big box stores and screened them through 1/2" hardware cloth before mixing with peat moss. There were so many sticks it was ridiculous. There were also stones (even a fist sized rock) and some random plastic in one of the bags of mushroom compost. Wasn't thrilled with that. I'll be glad when I'm making enough compost of my own and don't have to rely on the big box guys.

With so much land I am surprised that you didn't fill it half way with that. Regular soil will not decompose like the stuff you bought. The organic soils can occupy the top half. Less cost up front, slower drainage, and less ongoing cost each year. It is possible that maintaining the back side of the beds might be difficult because you can't get to the other side at the fence. The plants will get into the fence. All the best with your herb garden!

I have seen other gardeners plant a variety of plants in each bed, companion planting. They had plants that were thriving so I plan to try that soon or next year at latest.

Mix the soil in your loader bucket and dump it in the raised bed.

I’m renovating my garden, replacing the original wood edged raised beds with taller metal beds. I chose Birdies beds, made in Australia, rather than a Chinese made bed like Vegega. It’s exciting, but I’m really looking forward to being able to get back to gardening!
