After approximately nine months of testing and use with wood, wood pellets and alcohol I am ready to give my final thoughts on the Lixada Folding Wood Stove. Before I do I have one last test to see if I can improve the performance of the stove with alcohol

THANK YOU SOO MUCH. I bought an aluminum 1 wide x 1/16 thick plate at ace and cut the cross pattern for the top of my small Lixada titanium stove and cut it so a pot would sit 5/8 inch Above the burners. WOW. What a difference. Before this, I was going to sell it on Ebay just to get rid of it as it would not stay lite with sticks or small chunks of wood. I noticed this stove has no holes on the bottom sides whereas other stoves do, spthat was going to be my 2nd try to fix the air flow but now it is perfect. Hardly any smoke when I put the pot on and burns beautifully. Just to be clear, this stove I am referring to is 3.5" wide x 4 1/4 " tall. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR HELPING ME GET THE PERFECT BACKPACKING STOVE FOR ME. ALLOWS ME TO USE WOOD OR ALCOHOL. PERFECT

Hi Mark Love watching your in depth reviews on all things related to the outdoors, you always have the answers to what we really want to know about a product. On the basis of this final review of the Lixada mini wood stove, I went ahead and bought one!. Such a cute little thing!, and so small and light to pack for a hike. Have used it both with wood and a Trangia burner, and used your tip of sitting the burner on top of the its screw cap for extra height, which worked a treat. I also found that with the one I bought that by sitting the Trangia adapter on top of the stove, enabled me to put a smaller than usual diameter mug over the flame without it toppling!. So a big thumbs up from me for this versatile dinky little stove 👍👍. Best Wishes Les Dartford Kent England

Good video and thank you for posting. I like your idea for the opening to feed wood. I was able to fabricobble a stainless hinged door for the opening but I hadn’t thought of putting draft holes on the door. I’ve also made a stainless cross for the top. I use this stove some but still prefer a jet (wood gas) stove in the cooler months because it seems to preform better even with a trangia (another modified stove I’ve made).

Thank you. I have put these stoves aside in favour of other more effective ones. It does not seem right to have to make a lot of modifications in order for a stove to work properly. I still keep watch for inexpensive stoves that might offer value to people on a budget. Thanks for commenting

Nicely done! I've got the larger version of that same stove which came with the pot stand and an alcohol burner included. I found that you couldn't get the snuffer cap onto the burner while the crossbars were in place so I added a couple of cheap stainless tent pegs to the kit. Not only are they useful for removing the hot crossbars to snuff the burner, but also for hooking into the holes on opposite corners of the main body to move the entire stove if the wind shifts unexpectedly, etc. Other uses include extra pot stands, fishing out the halves of the pot stand when you inevitably drop one or both into the fire, a poker while burning wood, and chopsticks to pick up any burning bits that fall out and put them back where they'll do some good. Hoping that my experience proves useful to someone :)

Thanks for the tips, I'll be doing those. I got the titanium version as a Christmas present, but due to lockdown in the UK, and I have no garden, I haven't tried it outside. My Trangia burner is too small a diameter for the plate, so that's been left out of the kit I've assembled. That consists of a stainless steel sandwich lunch box that doubles as a mess tin, so I've put a handle on the centre of the lid's underside so I can reverse the lid to use as a cover. I use an old Mini Trangia sprung steel pot grabber for the handle and a folding spork, small bottle of meths (fuel for the burner in the UK) lighter and anything else I can fit in like sachets of coffee and sugar etc plus a homemade centre fire burner as it's lighter than the Trangia. A single mug takes just under 4 minutes to boil. A tip for you and the simmer ring. This works on the Trangia. If your's is magnetic, get one of those small extendable magnets for getting to dropped screws/nuts/tools in awkward places, or you could just fix a stick with epoxy resin to a small magnet and use that to fix to the simmer plate to snuff your burner out.
@blackboardbloke
@blackboardbloke 3 жыл бұрын
I had another idea on a simpler pot stand which would mean only cutting two slots at the centre of the strips to interlock. Then, if they were thin enough, use them in an 'X' shape and slide them into the gaps above the hinges/pin lock of the stove. Haven't made it yet, but that's next on the agenda along with your holed plate.

I've just got one for Christmas and found my cup just fitted on the top but dubiously, that's when my dad noticed the trangia holder has a lip at the front and back that fits perfectly on the top of the stove so you can rest smaller cups on top. I'm not sure how it will effect air flow as haven't tried it yet but my cup fit perfectly now.

Thank you for your kind words. I would like to offer two suggestions if you are getting into woods stoves. First and the least expensive is to find an Ikea utensil strainer and either use it as is or modify it to your liking. This can provide great satisfaction and a better understanding on how wood stoves work. I have a three part series offering some suggestions on how to modify one. The second suggestion would be one of the inexpensive collapsible stoves from Lixada or one of the clones. These are near copies of the American made Emberlit but less expensive. Hope this helps

Great video. Have the same hinged folding stove that I use with my trangia burner. Don't have any cross stands yet. but do have one question. If you put the cap under the burner on the bottom plate, will the heat from the burner itself harm or in any ways damage the rubber o rings in the cap itself???
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 5 жыл бұрын
I have not found it to get hot enough on the bottom of the stove to damage the o-ring. Having said that, you could further minimize the risk by placing the cap open side up. In my burner the o-ring comes out easily. That also my be an option. Thanks for commenting

You should try a few bent aluminum or stainless steel bicycle spokes (from a new or old bicycle wheel) that you can insert into a few pre-drill holes. I've seen many other DIY wood/alcohol stoves use bicycle spokes to hold alcohol stoves, used as grills for cooking over coals and/or as makeshift grill/pot stands when placed over a Dakota Fire Hole (and most of those DIY grill builds for Dakota Fire Holes had two round metal tubes [one that fit inside the other and both with about 15 - 30 evenly matched holes for the spokes to go through] to make a colaspable pocket grill for use on a fire or Dakota Fire Hole). The windscreen from a Dollar Tree store aluminum foil pan was a great idea. A sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil is important to keep in any fire or cooking kit. I keep a decent size sheet in all of my firestarter kits for many reasons. Sincerely, Jacob SurvivalGeek (KZfaq) kzfaq.info/love/fRsUPToBXp4ZIre__dJg4A

@SurvivalNerd
@SurvivalNerd 5 жыл бұрын
@@MarkYoungBushcraft Here's a link to the pocket grill tutorial: stvn.eu/the-pocket-grill/ You should do a video on how to create one. Seems like it would be useful over a colaspable wood stove and/or a dakota fire hole. Also, I recently found a video of someone using a cut steel mesh grill (from a gutter guard protector used to keep leafs and debris out of the gutters of a home/business) that was cut a little larger than the top of the colaspable wood stove to use to grill food or hold a smaller metal cup/pot to boil/simmer liquids. The mesh metal cutout fit into the bag of the stove for easy and lightweight transport. Someone else recommended a metal manual cheese/vegetable grater to grill/boil/simmer on (after being added over a colaspable wood stove).

Got the hinged model with the small steel dish as I usually use Hexi tabs when a wood fire isn't doable. Been using an Ikea Hobo stove in moorland environments where wood is limited and it's often wet to concentrate the heat I have but this is a more easily backpackable option. Thanks for the vid.

I'm in the UK at present and they are more of a ''tradition'' here (and on the continent) than in Canada. Yes, I got some of the alcohol gel the American services use a while ago and it was pretty good, better than the Fire Dragon the British army used.

for my 5 panel ( M steel slotted tabs) Lixada, using the trangia lid to prop up the burner gives me 1 1/4" space (from the top of the stove to the burner's jets). I find, IF your Lixada came with the 'fire bowl' {and almost all of them do}, I just invert the 'fire bowl' in place of the 'ash tray' to prop up the burner and I get 1 1/8" space. Now that would mean you have to 'bulk' up your stove by carrying the 'fire bowl' (won't be AS flat pack as it would be without the bowl). But really, it's pretty easy to find a space for the 'fire bowl'. Those 'extra socks' or spare gloves take up MORE room than the 'fire bowl' does. And if one isn't willing...as suggested, the lid is 'close enough' (but remember, the burner gets HOT when it's low on fuel...TAKE OUT THAT O-RING, just in case the heat transfers). If anyone is curious, using the simmer ring under the burner gives me 1 3/16", but then...HOW do I snuff the burner? (thought I'd at least 'try' everything, see what diff. each makes) Same 'trick' works if you use the 'fire bowl' in the intended slots (the ones near the top) and use fuel tabs. 1 15/16" from the top of stove to bottom of bowl (as intended), 13/16" IF you invert the bowl. Of course, distance to your fuel tabs depends on thickness of the tab (so I measured to the bowl, as a reference). You can only fit ONE tablet on the bowl, if it's inverted.

I have the Bushcraft Essentials stove that this one is modeled after and had the same issues with airflow. Believe it or not it was a simple fix by just using the stove upside down and taking out the horizontal panels. It made for a lighter stove and better airflow to the coals and below the pot.

Mark, take a look at what Push Bike Girl does with her aluminum potstand cross bars and the trangia. I love this stove based on your recommendation I bought one this spring and found it to be almost perfect for cooking with a trangia. I use the burner on the base sitting on top of the cap, and made a simmer ring out of the bottom of a soup can as the simmer ring just doesn't seem to open up enough. The grill basket made a wee grill for the top so I can put a can of chilli or a small tin mug on top. Brilliant! And it packs into the bottom of my 775ml MSR Stowaway. I find I don't need a windscreen except in high wind.

Are holes in the bottom of the stove plate necessary for good operation of the stove? I ask because I've seen other stove manufacturers make stoves with and without holes in their bottom stove plates.
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 5 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. I recently acquired a Tomshoo titanium wood stove that is essentially a clone of the Emberlit. The Emberlit does not have holes in its base plate where the Tomshoo does. I plan to make a video shortly looking to see what difference, if any there is in performance. Thanks for commenting

I'm wondering if I should cut out a square piece of a pan to drop in before using it. Of course, that added air flow is only good until you get a bed of coals in the bottom blocking the air holes. Then again, if the air holes are too large in the metal, it could cause the metal plate to wear out faster. I wonder if there is an advantage to large holes over smaller holes in the bottom plate...

Wood burning stoves look interesting - but 3 things make me not consider using it. 1 - a video here on YT shows a woodstove placed on a treestump. The treestump started glowing a LOT even before the water started to boil... 2 - no good way to control the heat (except putting on less sticks). 3 - you need a substantial amount of sticks to cook rice or potatoes or anything like that. Love my Trangia, with DIY windshield/stand, weighing 79g, and made from a cooking pot that fits perfectly around the 0,9liter Trangia kettle. Good quality, decent control over the heat (simmer ring), good heat dispersion (aluminum kettle), relatively good weight, and good size for 1 person :P

Hi mark I was confused about the pot stand dimensions. I was wondering how many cm the gap between the holes that were used to hold on to the edge of the stove were. I wanted to make one because I noticed that the fire had little air flow. Thanks.

Hopefully, I understand your question correctly. The aluminum bars are 2.5cm but with the cuts in them, it created a gap of 1.5cm above the edge of the stove. Thanks for commenting

@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 4 жыл бұрын
It should boil water faster as you will have more heat in contact with your pot. One thing to watch for would be warping. They have relatively thin stainless steel. The greater heat in the larger stove may cause some warping. Would be easy to bend back into shape if it does. Thanks for commenting

Hi Mark, Don’t know if you’ll see this comment/question, since it’s on a 2 year old video. Anyway, I’ll give it a try. I’ve been a fan of your videos for several years, but this is my first comment. With all of your experimentation and testing of wood burning, twig stoves, would you care to offer a recommendation or two on the best one(s). My use is primarily for multi day backpacking and paddling trips where I’m moving from place to place, mostly in the Adirondacks and a bit in Ontario, so weight is a big consideration, along with cost, burn effectiveness, ease of loading/reloading, length of sustaining the fire, and ease of use. At least these are the factors that come to mind. Wondering what you might suggest. Just a few additional words of appreciation. I very much enjoy your nice manner, along with your straight forward, practical approach to explaining, demonstrating, and testing gear. Always look forward to new videos. I’m not sure if I’ll get an alert if you do respond to this, so I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t mind also sending it to my email: gmagnes1 gmail com. Thanks again. Gerry

I just bought one of these after much research primarily to use with my Trangia. I received a small 3" square of 320 grit sandpaper with it. Any idea what it's supposed to be for? Great little inexpensive stove ideal for what I want it for.

I agree, great little stove, especially combined with the Trangia. Not sure why the sandpaper. Mine came with a thing blue plastic covering on all the parts that had to be peeled off. Nothing I needed sandpaper for. It may be for rust but I have not had a problem with that. Thanks for commenting

If 1 inch is the best height off for the pot above the level of the burner rim, how do you account for the fact that a height of 1 3/8th inch is so much more efficient than 7/8th inch spacing?
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 7 жыл бұрын
Fair question. My experience has been that the taller the gap (there is a limit beyond which it slows down), the faster the boil time but with more fuel consumed. The shorter the gap the slower the boil time, often with some fuel savings but not always. Based on extensive testing done by Hiram Cook, it would appear that I" gap provided the best balance between boil time and fuel consumption. However; I have also observed that there appear to be a number factors that affect performance such as stove design, air flow, pot diameter, ambient temperature. For this stove, I was working to reach a best compromise between wood burning and alcohol burning. I am not all that concerned about boil time. Thanks for commenting

Hi. At that time I was using unbranded Methyl-Hydrate I bought at a local hardware store (Canadian Tire). I have since started using Captain Phab's Marine Alcohol which is 90% ethanol (also known as de-natured alcohol). I still use the methyl-hydrate when I run out of the more expensive marine alcohol. The marine alcohol seems to burn a little hotter than the methy-hydrate but also burns out quicker. Both are clean burning. The methyl-hydrate is a bit more visible (occasional yellow flame) in daylight. Hope this helps

Hi Mark. I have exactly the same Lixada stove and ALOCS alcohol burner. From Amazon, I ordered the 5"X5" grill to set on top of the Lixada..hopefully that will work. However, if not, I will make the aluminum cross pieces you displayed. I also bought the Ohuhu windscreen (10-pc hinged folding screen) which is more than the height needed but it seems rather weighty. I may just have to continue using the solid piece of aluminum from Dutchware. It rolls neatly into a tight tube. I'll test the kit out in my backyard Hobo Camp before going into the woods of West Virginia. Another Lixada stove that works well with the ALOCS is the V-shaped model. For inexpensive wood burners, these Lixada stoves are worth the investment BTW you have a great speaking voice and sounds as though you are or have been an instructor..
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexander. You may notice in your testing that small pots do not seem to block air flow as much if they do not completely cover the top of the stove. Would be good to know how the grill works out for you. I have a couple of the folding aluminum windscreens in two heights 5" and 10"..I think. You could always remove a couple of sections to make it lighter. I actually bought one of the Lixada V stoves and have a couple of videos on my channel. I also bought the three sided version but have not had a chance to test it due to fire restrictions in our woods. Thanks for commenting...and yes, I have some experience instructing and presenting😉
