Liza Minnelli, at her best, performs Nowadays, from Chicago, with John Kander and Fred Ebb on Dinah Shore's TV Show. There's a little surprise at the end of the video. You don't want to miss it.

Why is everyone comparing Liza Minnelli, who is a legend, to GLEE?! Come on people...at least compare her to someone good and slightly in her league!

Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli were two of Broadway's greatest stars in their day. I was in an NYC restaurant at the time of this video, and when Chita walked in, the entire room burst into loud applause...it was like a scene from a film!!

Liza had been life long friends with Bob Fosse, John Kander, Fred Ebb, Gwen Verdon and Chita. Her loyalty to her friends is literally what saved the show. She went into "Chicago!" with literally only one weeks rehearasl and without the theater public knowing until the curtain was raisied on opening night, who was playing Roxie Hart. She played the part until Gwen Verdon's knee healed.

Interesting the sentiment of the song. "In 50 years or so it's gonna change ya know, but oh it's heaven nowadays." ...Who they were then, their friendship, etc. I'm sure it WAS heaven thoseadays.

I thought it was absolutely genuine and sweet... an exhibition of a real friendship. Liza and Chita are wonderful friends and to see how excited Liza was at the sight of such a good friend was really touching. They're obviously both incomparable performers--incomparable to each other and incomparable to anyone else ever to grace the stage. So much history, so many originated roles... for both of them. What a wonderful video.

This was a great moment. Chita originated the role of Thelma on Broadway and Liza played Thelma in a Chicago revival in the 70s. And there was an attempt to bring it to film with Liza as Thelma and Goldie Hawn as Roxie but the project fell through. I do not know if this was filmed before, during, or after Liza's Briadway run but I saw Chita's surprise entrance as a passing of the torch moment.

Wasn't advertised in the papers till after the fact -- ut was pretty much Sold Out in advance anyway 😎😎😎

The real irony of it all is that there's no such person as Liza Minelli. It's really sad that 41 years after she became a superstar and the new Miss Show Business according to Time magazine (she made the cover of Time and Newsweek the same week, an extraordinary feat) some fans can't spell her name correctly. As she sings in "Liza with a Z": It's M I double N, then E double L I. Minnelli. Liza Minnelli. It's Italian. Blame it on papa.

Ligthen up. There are only a handle of people on earth who could do what Liza did. Her mother was a uniquely LEGENDARY performer, her father was an esteemed director of musicals, and she remarkably held her own and in some ways surpassed them both.

Yes, I have always loved Liza, have seen her 8 or 9 times in person, from 1973 to 1999. I want to see her again so bad! She is touring, but not coming anywhere near me---hopefully she will again someday! I think this clip of the 'Dinah Shore' show is from about 1974? Does anyone know?
@grayforester4 жыл бұрын
IMDB: " Dinah's show premiered 9 September 1974 and continued through to 4 September 1981. She started out the 70's with Dinah's Place which usually featured one guest and was more of a home oriented show about cooking, crafts and occasionally music. This format lasted until May of 1974. When the show came back in October of 1974 the format had changed drastically to a variety talk show which was called Dinah. and went on until 1981. This show was also known as "Dinah and Friends" during the summer of 1976."

@randywong There are a few poorly lit cuts on You Tube of Liza in Chicago. Liza was fun and they did modify the choreography, especially Me and My Baby. Her version was like Eddie Cantor and it was fun. It was very strange though when Chita Rivera comes to the footlights in silhouette at the beginning of the show and the audience SCREAMED thinking she was Liza. It was rude when the applause died.

@kittystolemycookie94 Chicago ran on Broadway from June 75 to August 77. Liza played for one month, replacing Gwen Verdon, near the end of the run -- say, early in 77. DInah Shore's show "Dinah and Friends" ran 1974-80. I'm guessing this "reunion" is 78 or 79.
