Marry a smaller husband! Oh wait! Was that not option d) other ? Fitting a 6‘2“ - or taller! - is difficult with a small RV. And I would never want something as big as yours. But we’re not full timing. We’re campers. Weekenders. At most, three weekers. But I do lust after your earlier class B+. Just that extra little bit of space would be perfect.… And honestly, I could full-time in that one alone. You like to bake, I hate to cook. Give me a place to curl up with my Kindle, a little bit of space and light, and I’m happy.

When we bought our first travel trailer, I grabbed a piece of paper and looked up every single rv dealer in the city. Then we wrote down the weight and length limitations of the trailer based on our tow vehicle, and three must have’s. Must have a walk around bed, a couch, and dining table must be on the passenger/campground side. Figured out what dealers were at what end of the city so we could maximize our weekend time seeing several in one day. Then armoured with my clipboard, we spent several whole weekends pounding the pavement looking at every single trailer that looked like the size we wanted. I jotted down ones that could be a contender, made quick sloppy floor plan sketches to jar my memory. (Cell phone pics weren’t a thing back then, lol) Bought our choice and loved it. Even as the years went by, we started to go to these rv shows, and to our surprise we never saw anything we liked better, year after year...huh! - Fancy that. 😄 Cheers 🥂

Awesome! Good for you to think it through and bring your checklist. We've talked to many people in campgrounds (I'm sure you have, too) who bought the wrong floorplan. They went to an RV show "just to look" and bought on a whim. That is never good. You really have to go slow and think of all the parameters. For example, if you are going to be in campgrounds mostly, your view will be out the back so you don't look at your neighbor. We talked to some folks who did have a big back window BUT their side view was on the non-patio side. That didn't work. Thanks again for your comment!

Great video as usual. I love hearing the emphasis on a TPMS system. On my way home from the dealer with my brand new camper I had a blow out on the interstate doing 60mph, and it tore out the wheel well and damaged the siding ,wall & dinette area. The large nationwide dealer with many locations did nothing about the situation. They said I must have hit something in the road. WTF ! My insurance USAA paid for everything and I got to replace all 4 of the tires with goodyear endurance radials . 3 at my expense. The tire shop showed me where the other tires were defective with bubbles in the sidewall on the inside of the rims. I got a TPMS immediately and decided right then that you cant put a price on safety. Lost the use of my rig for 45 days but not my life ! Thanks for all you guys do helping others with sensible accurate advice from experience . Im getting a new rig next month at Northgate RV in Georgia. Grand Design Imagine . I want to deal with a dealer & manufacturer that are customer focused this time. Im over it .
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 3 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh! Well, we love USAA, they saved the day when my ebike got stolen and Progressive said my fulltimers insurance had an exclusion on ebikes. Paul had USAA renters insurance and they covered it. Can't say enough good things about them. But it sure stinks that you had to pay for three tires when all were defective! Glad to hear you are a TPMS believer- we sure are! Congrats on your new Imagine! We are on our second Grand Design- their service can't be beat!

I discovered single is great, too. I am very very happy for successful couples. My batting average was very bad...only a psychologist could explain, i suppose...but i discovered, for me, a new freedom and validation without being rudely or abusively treated or threatened. For me, even at 73, i know if i am attracted to someone now, i run! He has mommy issues and looking for someone new to take it out on. I wish I were different, but the biggest victory is realizing and dealing with our weaknesses and expanding our strengths. I love my life full of promise and adventure! I really am happy for the RV couples i follow. I just love how they love and interact in such real and healthy ways. It is like living vicariously, i guess. It is fun to get to share that, like family, in a way. I hope that is ok. Thank you . ❤

We researched for 2 years before we bought our Class A Gas Bounder Classic 34B back in 2011. Never have had a problem getting into state or National Parks. Most have a 35 foot max size limit, The gas Class A has not been any problem going over the Rockies. Agree with the TPMS we had a blowout in the middle of nowhere Wyoming before we finally bought ours. Now the TPMS is always on for travel.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda! So smart of you to do that research. We do talk to people on the road who bought on a whim. That usually leads to uh-oh once they are out on the road. Your Bounder sounds great, a good size to get in the National Parks. When I went from 21 feet to 30 feet I did find some limitations even in State Parks. Happy and safe travels to you!

We had a small travel trailer at first, to see if my wife would like it. She loved it. So, we spent over a year going into hundreds of trailers, figuring out what floorplan she would be happiest full timing in. I probably researched 100's more. We did end up getting one that's perfect for us, but it took a lot of planning for what what we'd need and searching. If I had any advice for folks considering this, it would be this: Don't be hasty to buy your rv. Consider the type you want, where you want your bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen, and then how long your vehicle can pull if you buy a trailer. Again, DON'T BUY IN HASTE. It will only lead to disappointment.

how long my vehicle can pull an rv, like, until my vehicle BREAKS? runs off the road? gets stuck in a turn? or like in the movie the long long trailer with lucille ball n desi arnez when their cadillac convertible is pulling their 40 ft trailer up hwy 74 out of palm springs UP that mountain knocking boulders off the rear end hairpin turns? havent seen it? do it!!

We have been full time in a 260rd starting 9/20. Surprisingly it doesn’t feel cramped. With everything changing so quickly we thought it would be best if we bought an RV Basecamp. We purchased a park model with an Arizona room at a nice resort. We are still going to travel but it’s nice to have some place to come home to just in case. You helped us choose the fifth wheel that we have now. We love it thank you very much

I am a retired U.S. Marine who serviced 30 years and that is how my wife and I learned rving. You see, in 1998 I was reposted to the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Italy and there were no base housing. So, we were told we were to rent or buy outside housing and we would be reimbursed. However, we couldn't fine any housing we could afford. So I ask the other Marines that I was stationed with and they told me that they rented rv's. So we went out and rented a very nice class A and moved in. There were rules, but we could travel on the weekends, and we did. We fell in love with the lifestyle. Eighteen months later I was reposted to Parris Island, South Carolina and my wife didn't want to live on base. She wanted to rent a class A off base. However, we couldn't fine one to rent. So We bought our first RV and it was a 5th wheel. We loved it. We both agree that our biggest regret is not finding RV life before 1998. We have had several different 5th wheels over the last 23 years and we loved them all. We now are the proud owners of a 2021 Grand Design Momentum 399th and we are still traveling several times a month. You guys do very interesting videos... Keep up the great work... We hope to meet up with you guys soon...

Hey. First of all, you both are great. Love your stories and info. I have been RVing for 10 years. Biggest mistake I did was buy the wrong trailer to pull behind my diesel pusher. I bought a double man door 35 footer. It was about 40 feet full length. Im a bit of a “gear head” as well and that trailer could accommodate my toys. One day my friend asked me how long I was. Needless to say, well over the 70 foot limit here. I lost quite a chunk when I traded it in on a double stacker. Lesson learned, “ Understand the regulations of where I want to go before I go there”. Some places there is regulations on the truck needed to pull a certain size trailer. Might be a good topic for you to touch on and share with your viewers. Take Care & Look forward to your next video. Over and out from Canada
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith! Oh my goodness, you made the right choice trading that in for a shorter trailer. That's how we learn, right? We had been driving our class b van for 10 years no problem and then bang it happened. We had just come down off the grapevine, which is a 2,645 ft descent, barely had cell reception, and the noise of the freeway made it next to impossible to hear on the cell. The tire that blew knocked out an electrical socket, both the muffler and generator exhaust pipes, and the alignment. That was the beginning of the trip and needless to say we limped into Bakersfield and spent a couple of days trying to get everything repaired. We bought a TPMS right away and for the last 5 years we have been so grateful every time we boot it up.

Another great video.. I'm about 10 months into fulltime RV living. BUT, I also fulltime RVed as a child. When my Mother was 28, and I was 8, she took me out of school, and we traveled the US for a year or more in a VW Bus converted into a camper. Now, 50 years later, I'm doing it again! As for regrets, or what I'd do different. Keep in mind, I spent about two years researching RVs and the lifestyle before I purchased. And at my point of purchase (Jan 2019), I still had not decided for sure that I was going to do this full time. I wish I knew a bit more about various manufacturers of fifth wheels, and researched or thought deeper with regard to floor plans available out there. That said, I really do like the fifth wheel I purchased. But I learned some thing's in the first as well as going into the second year of ownership, that I wish I'd have known before. However, some of that might be unrealistic. Hindsight is always clearer than foresight. One very important thing that someone shopping for their first RV should keep in mind. RV dealers don't always know as much about RVs, or RVing, as think they do, or you'd want them too. ALWAYS do as much independent research as you can. Videos what you all, and other channels put out are a great resource. One thing I did right, and you all touched on this, is I did not buy too small. Everyone I'd personally spoke to who had purchased an RV said they'd originally purchased too small. One friend even traded in their first RV for a bigger one, before it's maiden voyage. I agree 100% on the TPMS system. I had the TST TPMS, as well as other essentials before my maiden voyage. And that's because I spent time on KZfaq watching videos like this one, and weighing the relevance of the suggestions and tips, to my situation. Thanks for sharing, and for the opportunity to share!!
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger! Good for you for doing all that research. Sounds like it paid off. For most people, their first RV is not their last RV. Agreed it's better to watch KZfaq than trust the dealer knows all the details, as they likely don't. Happy travels to you!

We have learned about a rv that is to small. We have a 2011 Jayco Greyhawk 31 footer and took it on our first big trip from Oregon to Minnesota and realized we needed bigger when we go full time. For now we are going to just learn with our motorhome and keep watching you two and learning. Thank you. We have learned that if we would have rented a class c we would not be rving. The way it drove was crazy. We came home and had to put heavy duty sway bars and steering stabilizer on it. Now we are happy.

Great learning! Yes, Class C's can be lumbering. I've had two of them and don't like the way they handle. A 31 foot motorhome is good and nimble. Enjoy getting into places like National Parks when you take trips out. When you go fulltime with your bigger rig, you will probably do like us. We stay at campgrounds close to a National Park (and unburdened by time constraints) stay long enough to explore the area unhurried. Looking forward to meeting you out here!

My buddy owns three rvs and one is a fifth wheel and he rents all three of them. Not sure the company that owners use to rent their rigs but it is an option and I would recommend that. I’ve owned 4 rigs in my life and just ordered a brand new one making it my fifth rig. Your needs change over time and be willing to change and adjust to those needs and don’t get to attached to one rig cause you will get different ones. I am 51 and have been rv since i was a kid.

You two are too cute! On, regrets....only wish we had optioned for the larger gas tank on our truck. This would certainly have extended our range for stops and in some of those remote areas where gas stations are few and far between. We have a 27 ft Winnebago Minnie and have been very happy with its size and layout for the type of camping we do. Mostly extended trips of 2-6 weeks.

Thanks for your comment, Donna. Yes, gas tank size can be an important (and often overlooked) factor. When Paul and I first got together, we were deciding Ford vs Chevy, we noted how his gas tank for whatever reason would not hold the 36 gallons mine would. We did a video about our truck decision if you are interested: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9KcbLp5l83Glqc.html Enjoy your Minnie!

We have not paid for a campsite yet and after a 20 ft.travel trailer to a 27 ft . that just was not enough room for us and our 2 pretty good sized fur babies we bought a 33 ft 5th wheel and it's happy ever after now . We hope to meet up when all this craziness is over , Stay well and travel safe .

We took a about 4 years to find our first RV. Got a 1996 Itasca Class A to "try it out" figured a good quality low cost RV would be good. It worked great for four years but was starting to become a problem with finding parts for repairs. Wife wanted slides but I did not, one less thing to fail. Anyhow, after a few years into it we had the list of what we wanted in our "last rig" and started looking. After a two year search we narrowed int down to a certain year, make model. When they popped we went and looked at them but never bought. Then another rig popped up and the sale person sent me an email with a link. That was it! Moral to the story is listen to the wife and don't be so laser focused. If I would not have been so cheap/OCD I would have gotten something newer with slides. But all learning curves cost you something. No rig is perfect, some come close, don't spend years looking or putting up with something you regret - get out there. If you are not full timing it - use it as much as possible. Don't let it sit for months in storage. You are not adding more time to life by waiting.

We sold everything and quit camping, ..didn't make it a year and we started that same journey all over again. You never have enough room, we now have a 41 foot fifth wheel and are very happy with that, but never quit looking. I enjoy your videos guys! One thing I'd like to share with folks about renting an RV first that they may not know...it is a EXTREMELY expensive to rent an RV these days. I was shocked. Go to RVshare and look at any class of motorohome for rent...owners are charging 300 and 400 dollars a NIGHT, & they only give you 75 free miles a day before they charge you mileage. It takes me 75 miles just to get out of Houston! If you can afford it, more power to you - but for many folks, spending $1200+mileage for a 3 day RV trip is just way too much money.

Hi Warren! I was a Mopar guy before I got into Studebakers so I feel your pain. Finding the right camper setup seems like a never ending quest. Safe travels and stay safe to you as well!

@@LizAmazing yes! I was 18 years old when I had that car. I didn’t know jack about cars. It was the first car I ever painted. It certainly wasn’t a show car but it looked pretty damn good for my first paint job. I was trying to do brakes and I could not loosen the lug nuts on the passenger side for the life of me. I asked my uncle for help. You’re going the wrong way kid. Mopar uses reverse thread on the passenger side! I learned so much from that guy. I really miss him. Thanks for jerking those memories out of my head.

Paul & Liz, have you noticed any golf courses adjacent to or attached to the Thousand Miles campgrounds you've visited?
@LizAmazing

Yes! Paul doesn't golf anymore but his recollection is there has been a golf course within a few miles of every Thousand Trails we've stayed in. You may also wish to check out Harvest Hosts where you can stay (dry camping) at some courses. Hope to see you out here!

I think this is a good video but for somebody who’s new they don’t know what TPS means. Perhaps it would be better to use the full terms so they know what you’re saying. The other thing is I think it’s very wise that they go into a campground where the trailer or the fifth wheeler is parked but try to stay a month. That way they really know if the size is OK. I have owned a 32 foot fifth wheeler, cab over 11 1/2’ truck camper and now a 24’ Leisure Travel sprinter B+ which now works perfect. I am mostly solo. Love being short so I can park anywhere and in all parks. I haven’t been turned away yet.

Wise words, thank you so much! That's a great idea about living in it for a month. Thanks so much for your comment. There was a lot to love when I had my camper van- but it was only 21'. As a solo RVer, I think you've got the perfect setup at 24'. Happy travels!

Hey guys, great video. Big question for you though....what do you do about healthcare? Not your health insurance but if you need a doctor are you just going into walk-in clinics? Do you schedule annual physicals when you know you are going to be in a certain area where you might have a regular doctor? That’s a concern of mine when we are on the road for moths at a time.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed! I think the best answer is plan to swing back to your hometown once a year for doctor's visits and Rx refills. Due to covid, we did not get back to Lexington Kentucky (my hometown) in 2020. I used an online doctor to get my Rx renewed, got teeth cleaned in Mexico, dental work done in Vegas. We schedule checkups a few weeks out at towns we are going to be in for a while.

@@LizAmazing thanks for getting back to me. Kind of figured the same. Plus it should be no worries anymore for wife and I with our health insurance since we are now both on Medicare and most things won’t be covered anyway! 😉

@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 3 жыл бұрын
We've seen all the options for young famlies on the road. Met a family who had three little ones in a small trailer. Others with a motorhome. If you are looking at fifth wheels, consider a toy hauler. Some of those have good bedroom/playroom options.

Do you have a washer/dryer in your rig? What do you think about them?
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 3 жыл бұрын
We don't. We hear they are so small it takes all day to do laundry. And they are loud and shake the rig. I would think if you have a family, especially small kids, you would want one. And there are times it would be nice to have one ourselves!

Yes. And I heard from someone else that she rents a fifth wheel in Oregon every year for the Kite Festival. Guess you can rent anything for the right price! Good for you for doing some research before you buy. If you can try a rig first, that's the way to go.
