Please, please read this if you plan to do the coasters! My friend was gifted this craft at her engagement party and the little feet of each coaster stuck to the surface the tile below. The person who made them was devestated. She said she was sure the mod podge was dry - and she’s an experienced crafter! Be sure to wait a week or more before stacking them to gift. I would even consider placing sheets of wax paper between just to be safe.

I had the same experience with my Fimo trays I made as a gift. I coated them with ModgePodge and at first they where fine but after a few days they became so sticky. It was a disaster. Never take ModgePodge again.

Poor bride... 🙁 she must have been so stressed. You say « An experienced crafter made them this way ... » but, really? ... 🙄 I doubt she was for this kind of work , because We all know mod podge should cure for at least 3 weeks before being used like what she did : stack them ! Sorry for the bride but it is NOT a secret. We all know this if we can read. 😉

I’ve been making coasters from tiles for years. I do recommend spraying them with a sealant and also, I place sticky backed cork on the back of the coasters to help protect tables from the underside of the tiles and it just gives them a more finished look.

I have made doll clothes from our old clothes. When we were kids we made potholders out of old clothes. I made my kids sewing cards from old greeting cards glued to cardboard. Playsets made from boxes. My grandma handed me a rolled up towel if I asked for a doll. We made papier mache from newspaper, flour and water. We made clay from flour, salt and water. Doll and action figure furniture from throw away stuff. Since many people in the family were refugees and/or very poor we wasted nothing. I once made 25 luncheon favors for about $1.00. Tina

Liz, a fantastic addition to the dog treat gift would be a personalized dog tag! You can make them at most Petsmarts. They usually have the machine in front by the registers. Then just use the red & white string you wrapped around the canister with to tie it in so it hangs at the knot or bow!

You don't have to cove the whole entire bottom, and it can even be flannel from an old pillow case or a cork from an old wine bottle cut into slices. You only have to put it on the corners, which is much cheaper and less wasteful, unless maybe you use a thin fabric like felt - which can even be doubled. Get creative and have fun!

Love the coaster idea! A little tip...put a piece of felt on the back so they don't scratch the table. Also you should use water proof modge podge. I had some of these and the condensation from the cups ruins the finish.

I love making coasters - make some for a friend's bar around the pool. Had to have something unbreakable, so I went to Home Depot, flooring department, and got 8 of the little squares showing designs on wood flooring. They are freebies, so long as you don't clean the display out. Peeled the paper off the back, wiped down with alcohol, and modge podged photos to the front. Covered with several coats, then sealed well. On both sides. He loved his very different coasters, and two years later, still look like new. Also, they are waterproof, and unbreakable!

The coasters have been around for years my kids made them in scouts they are in their 40's now. They used epoxy for the top to seal it I think. They had felt on the bottom through one of our moves they got broken had to throw them away. Such a cute idea glad to see they are still doing them all these years later. 😁❤

@@daniellec8849 Yes it does. I make travertine coasters I sell at craft shows (or did pre-pandemic) You should never use a sealed or shiny coaster if you drink iced beverages - if the coaster is sealed it won't absorb the condensation and that defeats the whole purpose of using a coaster, at least in my book! Travertine is an absorbent natural stone. With mine, I back them in a waterproof sealant and cover them with cork on the back. This way the moisture can't penetrate. I then stamp them with Stazon permanent inks. This won't work for photographs but you could stamp names or initials throw on some decorative elements (swirls, etc) and you have a beautiful set for a personalized gift. For those who do want to use photos double check what mod podge you are using - mod podge can melt under a hot cup and when it drips onto your furniture it can ruin it.

A tip for getting photos to stick to the tiles: scratch the surface of the tile with a nail (a metal one, not a fingernail!) just where you plan to glue the photo, so it'll be hidden. It'll give the glue more surface area and it'll adhere better. 💛

I love the beads! I am making my sister the Christmas poem lantern and I made the other sisters two tiered tray.I also made them each an altered watch from my mother’s costume jewelry watches. I put a picture of my mom in it, added some shaker bits and used some tiny metal flowers and such to decorate them!

As a teacher, we don’t want homemade cookie mix, homemade hot chocolate mix, candy, bath bombs, lotions or coffee mugs. The thought it great, but we can only have so many coffee mugs. If you want to get your teacher something, get them a gift card to Target, Walmart, the local teaching store or ask if they have an Amazon classroom wishlist.

Yeah, I think food is only if you know someone really, really well. I mean, I've seen some people's kitchens. Just saying. Scents are so incredibly personal that unless you're certain, find something else to give. With allergies and preferences, lotions, bath stuff, and even candles can just get regifted or unused.

I would completely disagree with Dany Rae !! As a 40 yr old woman who has been working in early childhood education as well as working with “height needs / low income” families for aprox 18-20 years Also growing up with an elementary school teacher, and now a sister in law in education, we don’t do it for the gifts ! Like what cold hearted ungrateful human being, I have got to be missing something?!? A home made gift is from the heart a gift card is just plastic that you can buy more plastic material good with. The VERY BEST gift from a child, or familiy member is a genuine thank you ! When you hear a child say “you say thank you, I will never forget you were my favorite because you didn’t judge me, or when a parent and a child can say “you saved my life” “You saved my child and gave them a future! THAT IS PRICELESS!!!

@@elizab6529 A gift made by a child is different than these gifts presented in this video. Those are amazing. I’d rather get a child made drawing any day of the week rather than a gift card or mass made item. I also worked in a very high needs school (on a reservation). I understand people not being able to afford gifts. They are never expected and always appreciated. My point is, don’t waste your money on these types of gifts. If you can make these types of things, you are spending money. Ask teachers what they need for their classroom. Also, I work my rear off for my students. 15 years. I’ve cried many tears and spent many dollars on my students including buying clothing and food. It’s very disappointing and frustrating to be called a cold hearted ungrateful human being by a fellow educator. Maybe ask some questions next time before name calling.

I liked the coasters. I have made some with paper napkins. I put cork on the bottom to protect the table top. I am sewing some bowl cozies for my adult children as a homemade gift.

I like the cookie jar idea, and it's giving me ideas for a few other food things to gift in jars or pans etc! I made picture coasters of my kids for my parents years ago and they still use them, one of the best gifts ever! Thank you!

my daughter made photo coasters using pictures from vacation. we sealed them with a poly spray. i would also say it's very important to have something on the back of each coaster - cork or felt - to keep them from scratching a table.

For the coasters shouldn't you glue felt to the back of the coasters? So they don't scratch the surface they put them on.

Loved all of these. Not exactly a homemade gift but I gathered pictures of my cousin's 2 dogs that passed this year. Sent them to an Etsyy store. They photo shopped them into Renaissance outfits. Had both of them in the same picture. I went to Hobby Lobby & bought a mat. Went to a thrift store & found a great frame for $4.00. The picture, for it printed off, the mat & frame all less than $40.00. The frame is 18"x22", mat is 11"x14" so it is quite large. Did the same with my daughter's, (who is fighting cancer), cat in Victorian dress. I am over the moon the way they turned out. Can't wait to give them.🤗 Merry Christmas to you.❄❄

I loved all of them. The one with clothespins reminded me of a fellow teacher who used to teach her pupils how to make them for Mother's Day gifts. I think they glued them just with white school glue and I don't recall seeing that they had put anything on the back to make them stronger, so I'm not sure how long they lasted. What a coincidence that I had been thinking about it some days ago , after so many years, and I've just come across this!
