It is truly curious that the national hero of a country is a poet who, instead of having wielded a metal weapon, has taken a pen to express absolutely revolutionary ideas through his poetry. That is France Prešeren, a Slovenian hero who wrote the poem entitled Brindis that would later be adopted (two of his stanzas) as the National Anthem of Slovenia, which could be described as a love song for free thought and the fatherland, but, above all things, a call for the unity of all peoples for the sake of world peace.

Thank you for the lovely video❤️ I’ll never forget my experience in this city. We were staying at the Grand Hotel Union which was smack in the middle of all this. I’ll never forget the memory of walking out of the hotel lobby to take a stroll around the place and finding myself transported into this fairytale. Imagine my surprise when as I was walking with my head down low I look up and found myself in the middle of all this; the Franciscan church behind be, the Preseren statue to my left, a kind-looking gentleman walking his dogs to my right, and in front of me was a man playing the accordion. I took a few more steps forward and behind him was the view of a castle on top of a hill in the distance. I miss this place so much.

I lived and worked in Slovenia for two years in the late 90s. My wife and I were the first American couple to be married in Slovenia at Bled Grad. It's like being in another world; culture shock coming and returning to the U.S. Sometimes I really miss it. It's my second home.

The whole city is a tourist attraction!!! You need 2-4h to view the collection of the National Gallery alone. What would qualify as a tourist attraction according to you, Disneyland?

The girl at 3:50 is actually mimicking the very moving and terrible statue at the front of the Lubjel Tunnel which crosses into Austria. During WW2, the Nazis had a concentration camp there and built the tunnel using slave labor. There is a book about in (in Slovene). There is a memorial at the site with a statue of an eviscerated man/skeleton reaching up to the sky in agony, pleading.

Yes, a lot of Slovenians HAD TO escape their mother land during and after the 2nd world war due to communist persecution. There are quite many in Australia too. Old customs unfortunately are dying out with the new generations there as the kids and grand kids are fully Americanized/Australianized.

What heck is czechoslovenia? There was Czechoslovakia. Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia which was part of eastern communist block up 1991. The only difference Soviet republics was between countries of eastern block countries that despite of the fact that they all were comunist republics, eastern block countries had some light freedom and element of capitalism. What is the point of denial ? I don't get it. Its over now.

Don't subscribe to me under any circumstances there was no such a thing czechoslovenian republic. Name was szechoslovakia. Slovenia was part of yugoslavia. Eastern block was not part slovenia nor szechoslivakia. I thought to my self: “What a rude person!” If you don’t like to be filmed, don’t play on the streets. Go play at a concert hall so nobody records you.” And he still has his acordion case for tips. I did not tip by the way. You got to have charisma with your audience if you want to make money. I think he is in the wrong profession. (This happened in August of 2021 btw)

4:25 - France Preseren (Pre'-shur - in) is the national hero of Slovenia. He was an early 19th-century lawyer and poet who wanted independence from the Hapsburg rule and admired Thomas Jefferson who he allegedly met in Paris. He was imprisoned and prevented from practicing law for years and saw his writings censored. He died poor and neglected.
@JustMe-uc8wj2 жыл бұрын

@deaddocreallydeaddoc52442 жыл бұрын
@@JustMe-uc8wj Yeah, I think I agree. He was censored heavily and prevented from practicing law. That is not actual but functional imprisonment, you could say. I lived in Kranj for over two years. One lawyer I met there talked about France Preseren's meeting Thomas Jefferson and the local history speaks of it as well. Kranj was his home town and he spent a lot of time at the Stari Mara cafe, which I also visited many times while I lived there.

Slovenia did experience about 3 brain-drain waves in the past: 1) Between the 2nd world war when intellectuals and anyone prosperous and productive was killed by the communists 2) After the 2nd world war most intellectuals and entrepreneurs that were still left escaped the communist regime 3) After independence and joining the EU a lot of ambitions people migrated to the European west. I went east to Australia. New world suits me better.
