There’s no competitors to keep them worried about losing customers, so they just don’t care about upgrading. Remember when they straight up asked in the survey if we’d be ok spending full price on another game even if they changed nothing?

Ugh yea it’s frustrating. With the way 2K has been recently, I actually think they probably would make a better hockey game than EA. Their PGA game is better than EA’s and they have the right idea not putting it out every year, but rather putting it out every other year and the quality and care shows. They also are bringing back the TopSpin tennis game for the first time since 2011. It kinda seems like for football or the real major sports they probably don’t have a chance, but hockey is kind of a fringe major sport as it is and seems like a good potential target for them. A guy can hope anyway, because EA has shown time and time again they don’t know what they’re doing and if anything they’ve gotten dumber and worse at making this game.

Been saying this for years. What's shocking is that incidental contact is literally a slider in the game that they've never utilized well. NHL 23 and NHL 24 have been the two worst NHL games in a decade when it comes to physics and incidental contact. I also have brought up the fact that the comp 6s scene is absolutely plagued by bad physics determining games. The comp scene is a total joke because of it. I don't think they need to break the game to make attributes work or be felt, they need to start tuning this game at a normal speed and not mach 10 and tunning the game and its attributes/sliders will become naturally more granular since the game will naturally allow more scenarios to play out. Your attribute suggestions are great for online play, but are needed for offline play.

You perfectly articulated all the reasons why I've grown tired of playing NHL games and ultimately skipped on buying 24. One thing I would add about the physics; over the last few years I noticed a force field around my own team's goal crease that would push my player away from my own net. Defending cross-crease passes or wrap arounds became insanely difficult because of that. At this point, Rocket League is the only sports game I'll play. The physics are consistent, there are no glitch goals and the AI influence is minimal to non-existent. If the NHL series can iron out some of the issues brought up in this video, I'd happily play the game again. Until then, I'll stick to different games.

I recently made a rant video on my page after skipping nhl 24 & as I said in my rant video the small things are what made past nhl games great. Majority of the issues with NHL games are honestly just alot of lack of detail & care and also the fact the the animations they continue to use are dated with the new technology they keep upgrading to. Which is why the game will continue to glitch in certain situations that involve physics based interactions. And unless EA takes about 2-3 years to strip the game to its core & completely upgrade all the animations to the newer technology or leave animations alone all together the game will continue to glitch n malfunction.

I couldn't agree more with the opinion that NHL should be more skill based. For years now the game has just been a cheese simulator. Players are rewarded for forcing passes and defenders are punished despite having perfect positioning. You get bumped off the puck despite skating away from the defender simply because you have a low balance rating. I could go on with examples all day, but you already get the idea. RNG based on you and your opponents attributes have more say on the outcome of the game then they should and that is super frustrating for everyone. This is perhaps a hot take among some but I too believe that EA Should move as much as they can away from Attributes. Like you said: majority of the in game mechanics should be manual and skill based. The skill curve would open up and the game would become more competitive. Like Lama mentioned some of the basic changes would be: Eliminating Attributes completely from faceoffs Making passing completely manual Making One timers Manual - AI goalies this year seem to be able to save everyone timer thrown at them, probably as an attempt by EA to nerf them. Making them manual would make the one timer a skill play that requires good passing, timing, and aim. Make tipping pucks a quick time event Making passing interceptions based on a quick time event and your positioning, the thing I hate most in this game above all else is when you and your teammates are in perfect defensive position but the other team forces the pass through, sometimes multiple sticks, and scores off it. There is absolutely no skill to these plays and it is all attribute based. Introducing an “intercept” button would fix this. It would reward players for their timing and defensive positioning, while allowing high skill forwards to execute finesse passes and catch the D sleeping or out of position. Hitting needs to become a more skillful art and not a crutch that players rely on. Overall great video and analysis, if EA could only see this and listen.

I actually love all these ideas-- especially the one-timers. Don't know how I didn't think of that. Not sure I would sign off on "quick time" events as that could be a little tricky in 6v6 and be happening a little too often, but some sort of actual mechanic instead of the game and stats just taking over for you.

Completely agree. The traits have ruined the game. My friend and I play the game as if you would play real hockey. Make good passes, defensive set ups, defect pucks, block shots, etc. But yet the game doesn't want you to actually play hockey. It wants you to cheese your way to victory. Poke checking, hitting, and stick lifting have to be revamped. I should be able to lift someone's stick without it being a slashing penalty 8 times out of ten. I also shouldn't be absolutely destroyed by a hit simply by them nudging me. I just wish EA cared enough to make a good hockey game. But they don't.

I'm mainly a hockey player and fan but I recently went through the career modes of all sports games (NBA 2K, FIFA, Madden, MLB The Show) and even though I play the NHL career mode because I LOVE hockey, it is far and away the most removed from the real sports it's trying to simulate. If you look at any AI player for 3 seconds you will see egregious forward/backward skating, everyone running towards the puck, everyone getting in the way of their own teammate, never any structured plays either out of defense or in the ozone, just every AI dude has a spot they want to stand on and get to.... it's comedy. To your point about having to represent attributes I initially fully agreed, but what I noticed in other games is that they represent attributes by VISUAL misplays, an overthrown throw to a receiver or a ball fumbled on pick up in the show, that's low attributes. A puck glitching through a stick to 'represent attributes' is just the shittiest, unpredictable, gameplay. In terms of "poise", I think it was the same as 'intangibles' in 2K, a nothing stat to boost certain Overalls of players who would be two low overall based on their actual given attributes. Man this video is awesome, I find myself agreeing with all your points. The worst attribute is 'hand-eye' which just means you'll lose pucks that you passed perfectly because your player will receive them worse than an 8 year old with a wrong sided stick for no reason. One thing I would add is that I miss the opportunity to call set plays to trigger teammate behaviour. Like a default breakout stretchpass or all forwards coming low to break out together and so on, so many opportunities where hard coding could clean up this mess so easily.

Playing competitive EASHL this year has been ridiculous, perfect pokes bail forwards because they have a high puck control and they immediately get the puck back sprinting in a straight line, then they run into the goalie and it goes through them. Its been a good year for forwards, frustrating for defenders.

Yep. It's been horrible for defenders and goalies. What annoys me too is on plays like the ones at 1:00 and 6:21, I feel confident that if I was the teammate of the person passing the puck, I would receive that puck just fine. Skater ability to receive passes just seems way better than the skater ability to intercept passes, even if the puck speed and positioning is the same. It makes for such an inconsistent experience.

Awesome video, I totally agree and I hope EA sees this. What I also hate about the game is the AI. The AI players are fucking dumb when I play Be A Pro and I know that hockey IQ at the level of NHL players is not the easiest thing to replicate but damn when a player has a breakaway and suddenly he passes the puck back to the backcheckers you know it’s bad. Also I hate scripted goals. When I play goalie in BAP I can easily predict when I get scored on. It’s almost impossible to catch a one-tee or whatever is that x-factor called. I can be in the best position possible and the puck still goes in and I understand that there are unsaveable shots in real hockey but this is straight up bs. Animations are a huge issue as well and I’ve been limited by them countless of times in the net.

Awareness ratings should be about how the players position themselves and react without the puck when they are AI controlled. A good defensively aware player should get in the passing/shooting lanes more, while a good offensively aware player should be able to create them (only AI controlled). They definitely should not be in modes that are strictly human vs human.

Totally agree with everything and it really takes away from the experience when you lose games off the most ridiculous things as shown in the video. Every game is like this too. I also think they need to revamp attributes and actualy have a deeper dive into them and not a generic description. It also feels like attributes effect other attributes as well. For instance hand eye and offensive awareness
@wildchild795
@wildchild795 5 ай бұрын
The big issue I see is the AI. When you are playing offline, and player locked or in Be A Pro, your team mates need stats like faceoff, hand eye, offensive/defensive awareness to allow for a difference in quality of teammates. But when controlling that same player, those stats should be deactivated or something to take the weird chance out if it

You would think this has never been a problem with the physics of the EA NHL games through the years, but you would be wrong. This issue has been around for at least the 2011 version. I think the 2016 version improved the physics a little, but then it went back down again it seems. Sticks being able to pass through players legs with the puck included like nothing was there at all has been the most common physics problem noted (at least by me). To be honest, yes, I have used this physics break to my benefit and is something I keep in mind when playing Be A Pro especially. Lets also mention there has not been a PC port sense 2009 and so I dusted off my Xbox 360 to play a physical copy of 2014 version after RPCS3 kept crashing on me with the 2011 version. My Xbox 360 is connected to my PC monitor with its own speakers connected to the back. allowing me to play the game daily. You would think with the extra time not having to port the game to PC for so many years, they would be able to fix the minor things like sticks magically going through another stick and nothing happens. I guess adding all the addition crub, that makes the game worse, is more important.

I absolutely think General Use Traits should be removed. The things that give extra animations or make the most basic of things boosted need adjustments/removal. I hate not having Equal Skating Ability on All Classes for Eashl Based on Edges. I want 90 agility to feel like 90 agility across all classes. I think a generalized tipping would be good, like Hold L2 and use the right stick left or right to hold it out your stick on either side for a tip so you could see a player is actively doing it instead of Rng. I have alotta things i like about this game but alot i dont. Physics you touched on is just wild sometimes like the most basic pick up animations can have your players arms tweaking behind there back or when you go to shoot a puck and your swing hits a cement wall and your sticks just stops immediately because of some contact or the pucks a dead stop. The X factors and stuff are cool but at the current state its just creating Bs to deal with. Effectiveness should be based on attributes and i kinda like that numbers reward you ex. I have 99 passing you have 70 def awareness i should be passing it through that player most of the time if the pass is juiced Unless there positioning is absolutely perfect. But in the Same sense at higher ratings for defensive awareness it needs to feel rewarding cause there is some nonsense that 80 passing can force a cross crease despite Staring 99 defensive awareness in the face. Its why shooting is kinda hit or miss. Not alot of players play a shooting style game where hey i have 90+ Accuracy im going to snipe it consistently. Its more max the skating and run the minimum Accuracy then slap a perk on. (ex CQ 80 Accuracy) The whole Game would probably be better off with a reset and a simplified baseline. With All of the perks being really Niche Things rather then the General use Perks so that a player can show off more of there Playstyle rather then pick the best stuff. If everything is niche and less impactful more creativity can be expressed instead of being Op/and coming with extra animations for the basics and creating jankness. Your Bang on with the Automatic stuff being dumb. Auto sauce is lazy removes skill for actually doing a proper sauce the fact you can Tape to tape a blue to blue pass at full speed by pressing Buttons is a nice add for lesser skill/disabled community members with accessibility issues but its overkill in a the way that it removes the skill to make saucer passes that you'd have to make The Adjustments for a time the player skating into it. NHL24 has taken a lot of things in the right direction and now has room to do something differently rather than be a copy-paste game from previous iterations But just a matter if it will happen and how many years of getting a few things we ask for each year till it feels like a complete game.

Yea stuff like how much your defensive attributes or traits enable you to pick off passes and stuff should still be a thing I think, which is what I mean in the vid when I say these things could just need to be "tweaked." I think some degree of player rating vs player rating is fine, but right now the balance feels like I can have 85+ defensive awareness and be anticipating and correctly reading the play and positioning myself accordingly, and my skater still consistently struggles to make the routine play or doesn't even react to the puck. Crafting your build intelligently and choosing the right attributes should still be a skill in itself, but reading the play and positioning yourself should be far more important than it feels right now.

I'm a strong LD defensive defenseman on ps5 but Men this video is spot on. I just dont get why the creator of this game dont focus a lot on updating physique. And rather just throw player packs on HUT. Also I'm not a fan of elite edges because it's one of the reasons where that traits also breaks the game physique. It should be limited to a certain build or completely remove it from the game

Lot of good points in this video. I agree with the ratings and attributes causing broken animations. I think the xfactors also cause the broken animations to occur. If you have one tee on, sometimes your player will get a slingshot type animation into the puck that looks very unrealistic and is op for the shot. If you get rid of some attributes, then the xfactors as well would have to either be gone or nerfed liked you said. I think this game should reward skill, especially in a competitive online environment. Rewarding good position and good plays instead of broken RNG.

There are glitches that are reoccuring year after year. The physics is infuriating. When you set yourself up for a check and you hit the player and literally nothing happens, like how is this not patched BEFORE release? I've said it for years. we are beta testers who pay premium for the game we are testing. It's disgusting. But I will likely buy NHL 25 cause hope is the last thing you have, right? I will add that what would help in online modes is removing attributes and make it all about your play and your skill as a human player. I'd hope that if this happens, that they keep attributes in franchise mode as it's a core part of that mode. I think making offline modes accessible is good but multiplayer is hard and should be hard, for those who seek that challenge.

I'll be honest, watching this clip, you could have told me it was the same game I last played in NHL17 after playing for about 15 minutes and just shelving the game forever after that, and I would believe you. I still see the same awful passes and animations I saw back then that had me going "I swear, this is the last time I buy this game". Honestly, best choice I made was to finally just stop buying the game. EA has made it clear they only care about one thing...and that's HUT players they can milk for money while letting every other facet of the game keep getting worse. Sadly, thanks to HUT players, losing the career mode and offline players doesn't really matter, because what's $70 for a single game purchase matter when you have someone who will pay that $70 and then keep paying? But even if I'm not changing the game by not playing (which looking at these clips, I'm clearly not. Still seeing the 360 spin from a guy who could just easily catch the pass and skate backwards like at the 1:00 mark, the same consistently bad goalies and absurd inability for the AI to even stay facing the puck and puck carrier while moving around instead of constantly spinning and running everywhere). The game looks stuck, and while it's not being made better by my not purchasing it, my life isn't being made worse by purchasing a game that just stopped being fun to me to even play. I spent so much time trying to find the right set of sliders and being annoyed at the AI and goofy animations that I finally realized I would just be happier not playing it at all. So far...so good. Maybe someday someone else can get a shot at the NHL series and focus more on gameplay than on all of the goofy stuff...but until then, I'll save myself the frustration.

Your changes would work for online. what separates a 4 liner who can skate fast from a topline center with ai controling them

I’m not actually sure that rating makes a difference for actual AI decision making, but either way I’d be fine for the balance being different for online vs offline.

I just wanna be able to dump the puck like real life, in this game it's a joke. Yet they add one button lacrosse goals and hip checks from hell mode, very realistic 🤣 Also the werewolfs skins and what not have no place in a hockey game. Just my 2 cents 🍻

I can hear that argument. I think full crossplay, quickplay, being able to draft drop-in players to club, all improved the online club experience. I think the actual gameplay is largely the same with changes like goalie animations, the new control scheme, and the pressure meter being steps backward, and changes like one touch animations, the new hitting mechanic, and button passing being generally good changes imo. They’re pretty close for me but I’ll take 24 for those things.

Get rid of animations. Go play nhl 09 and 10. Best playing games of all time. They feel leaps and bounds better than 24. Everything the puck does makes sense.

@@llamapenNHL I wouldnt either as the game is the same, offline and online. The same physics based problems are just as evident if not more so as you are playing offline. Online you have less problems with the AI as most if not all players are controlled by Humans, which makes the physics look horrible because the human players cheese backskating with the puck and other mechanics that make getting the puck off them near impossible. The simple fact is that positioning means nothing and your defense are like bumpers in pinball. Chain animations are killing sports games, this isnt street fighter...
