This is part 1 of a tour by train in North Wales, filmed in 1961.
We travel by first generation Diesel Multiple Units from Llandudno to Llandudno Junction, then by the Conway Valley Line to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The town’s slate industry covered the roofs of the world for many years. We see some of the surviving remains of the narrow gauge lines serving the quarries, and a little of the then un-restored part of the Ffestiniog Railway.
Also the recently closed Great Western station, terminus of the line from Bala and Wrexham.

I did this journey on a primary school trip in the mid 1970s. We stayed at a Youth Hostel at Pont y Pant (Lledr House) but also visited the Slate mine at blaenau ffestiniog. Happy days although I remember it rained a lot! Thanks for posting

I was handling the section between Glan Conwy and Blaenau FFestiniog in Simsig recently . I am so happy that I was able to see the golden days of the Conwy Valley Line . Love from India .

Yet another gem from team Snowdon. I think the loco at 1.07 is a Black 5 rather than a 'Scot'. It's good that all of the line covered here is still extant and is host to the occasional steam special as well as serving the tourist industry and local community.

In the 1970's I so took it for granted that I could always sit in the front seat of a dmu looking over the driver's shoulder at the route ahead. One of many things that Health & Safety Officers have stolen from our way of life.

It's great to see this. The change from postcard idyll to industrial wasteland via the tunnel, is indelible on the memory. It's austere, foreboding, another planet, barren and desolate, like the shale formations on Mars.
