Llangollen canal Episode 1, Ellesmere to Llangollen by narrowboat

Join us as we spend a week on the Llangollen canal. Our hire boat, the "Happy Wren" was a 49 foot narrowboat - some 9 feet longer than my boat Gladys will be.
In this episode, we journey from Ellesmere to Llangollen, taking in the aqueducts at Chirk and Pontcysellte.

Excellent! Just what I was looking for. Will be doing Whittington Wharf to Llangollen, and back, May 2024. A little concerned with all the narrow portions. Assume more traffic in May looks like a traffic jam looking for a place to happen.

Thanks! Yes, it gets narrow after you cross the big aqueduct at Pontcysyllte - there are a couple of 'narrows' (there are signs up for them) where the best thing to do is send a crewmate ahead on foot to check all is clear (with a mobile phone because there are bends, so you can't see them from the boat). Its not far from the aqueduct into Llangollen though. Also, some very narrow bits as you enter Llangollen and just before the basin. We have only done that half of the canal once (hire boat) but it seems that traffic jams are just to be expected there and are part of the fun! Probably crazy during July and August! Enjoy it anyway! 👍

I want across The Pont, in the late 70s early 80s,,,,I still have nightmares about it!!!! We live in Japan and my wife - Japanese - wants me to retire and for us to buy a narrow boat in the UK!!! Should we do so,,,,,We will catch a bus into Llangollen!! I can't see me doing that again!!

Hi Ian and hello Japan! Well, its a bit scary, I admit! Though it feels a little surreal when you're actually up there - but definitely not for someone with no head for heights! Good luck with buying a boat if you decide to go ahead, and maybe I'll see you on the Llangollen some day 😊

At the viaduct and narrowed approaches, is there a tally system, so boats don’t come face-to-face? Or is it just luck, as to whether or not there’s a boat coming in from the opposite direction. There’s a few favourite places around Britain & Scotland, where paddlers/boaters, (kayakers & canoeists) will paddle down a river, have lunch and after a portage of between a few tens of metres to a few kms, will paddle back to their start point via a canal. The Llangollen-Dee and canal, is a popular round trip. Tends to be an all day trip and apart from the initial rush of WW, (whitewater) outward section. The muscles and mind can relax on the homeward trip. section. It tends to be quiet, as the river is fished, so paddlers are only allowed on in winter. And hence, the canals’ main boating season is done. For the viaduct section of this two-way trip, the paddlers and or boaters setup runners at either end. So there’s no chance of being run over by a narrowboat and everyone gets a photo of them coming over the viaduct and peering over the lip. When you’re in a kayak, the lip is at hip level or just above - depends on kayak. When in a canoe, the lip is below hip level. Happy days!

Hi DC and thanks as always for leaving an interesting comment 😊 Good question about the aqueducts and narrows - no, there's no formal system in place - basically, if another boat is already on the aqueduct, then you simply have to stay back in wide enough water and wait til its cleared. Sometimes there can be a convoy of boats though, so the wait can be considerable, and frustrating as progress is so slow. We were lucky on the way to Llangollen - at both of the aqueducts, the tunnels and in the 'narrows' just outside the marina there. It wasn't so easy on our journey back out again though... as you'll hear in episode 2 😒 PS - you'll never see me in one of those kayaks!
