Located in Conwy County Borough, North Wales, and around 11 miles south of Conwy, is the town of Llanrwst.
The name 'Llanrwst' is Welsh for 'church of St Grwst', a 6th & 7th century saint who lived in the Kingdom of Gwynedd. Geographically it is situated on the east bank of the River Conwy.
In the late 13th century, Edward I ordered the construction of a series of castles following a failed Welsh rebellion of 1282. With the construction of Conwy Castle came a rule whereby the Welsh were prohibited from trading within 10 miles of the town of Conwy. As Llanrwst fell just outside of this restricted zone, it became a key trading centre, and a producer of wool.
During the late 15th century, St Grwst Church was built. This replaced an earlier church from the 12th century which had been destroyed in 1468 during the Wars of the Roses. Situated here is the stone coffin of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, a.k.a. Llywelyn the Great.
In 1636 Pont Fawr was built (meaning literally 'big bridge' in Welsh). This is alleged to have been designed by the famed architect Inigo Jones who was professionally associated with the wealthy Wynn family of Llanrwst who were responsible for its construction. The bridge is Grade I listed, and is one of the oldest in Wales.
In addition to wool, Llanrwst has been home to various niche industries including clock-making and harp-making. In the 18th century it became a producer of the Welsh triple harp, featuring 100 strings. This is a variant of the 16th century original Italian design. It is typically used in Welsh folk music.
In 1863 the railway arrived in Llanrwst. The station was originally the southern terminus of the Conwy and Llanrwst Railway shortly before the line was extended south to Betws-y-Coed. A second station opened in 1989 in the town centre, which is today known as Llanrwst station, while the original has since been renamed to North Llanrwst.

Llanrwst, with its rich history and picturesque charm, is truly a gem in North Wales. Thank you for taking us on this virtual walk through the town center and providing fascinating insights into its past. The significance of St Grwst Church and the stone coffin of Llywelyn the Great showcase the deep historical roots of Llanrwst. Pont Fawr, believed to be designed by the renowned architect Inigo Jones, is a magnificent piece of architecture and a testament to the town's heritage. It's incredible to learn about the diverse industries that have thrived here, from wool production to clock-making and harp-making, each contributing to the town's cultural tapestry. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century brought new opportunities and connections to Llanrwst. Thank you for sharing this captivating glimpse into the past and present of this remarkable town.
