Lloyd Bussio: The Greatest Software Transition in BIM History
Lloyd Bussio, also known as the @IfcArchitect is a registered professional architect operating out of Johannesburg, South Africa, and is known for his extensive use of BlenderBIM from his KZfaq channel which exploded recently.
Lloyd shares his journey of using BlenderBIM since its inception in 2019. He explains how he found the software to be a powerful tool for his architectural projects, allowing him to move away from using Revit and AutoCAD. He mentions that he hasn't touched Revit or AutoCAD since October 2022 and is now doing everything with BlenderBIM.
Lloyd discusses the advantages of BlenderBIM, emphasizing its flexibility and the control it offers to users. He also talks about the importance of 2D drawings in his work, explaining that while some countries like Norway are moving away from requiring 2D drawings, in many places, including South Africa, they are still a crucial part of architectural projects.
He also shares his thoughts on the rapid development and improvements in BlenderBIM, with Lloyd expressing his admiration for the work of Dion Moult (the lead developer of BlenderBIM) and other contributors. He shares his belief that BlenderBIM is future-proof, offering a way to work in a format that will remain relevant and accessible.
Towards the end of the discussion, Lloyd talks about his efforts to encourage others to use BlenderBIM. He believes that with a week of learning Blender and BlenderBIM, professionals with previous experience in the field can start using it for small projects. He emphasizes that BlenderBIM is not just for architects but can also be beneficial for engineers, planners, and other professionals in the industry.
I promise you, you do not want to miss this one.

Thank you for your hard work Lloyd. I believe you may change a good number of people's lifes for the better. I am hoping to make the leap away from Revit and onto BlenderBIM at some point. I only wish Blender had better custom snaps for us MEP engineers (for example a tee fitting with one custom snap per joint).

There are cheap addons that can boost Blender functionality. You just need to start, and you'll find your way around, I promise you.

It is definitely getting better, but yes the snapping leaves a lot to be desired, hopefully we get to a point we can just set up a bounty and get it sorted once and for all

@@IfcArchitect you mean that could be addressed in BBIM? That would be awesome.

@@BIMvoice Yes or something similar the CAD Transform addon already changes how snaps work to be more cad like so it could be something that is incorporated into BlenderBim as a feature

A bunch of work is being done for MEP right now including automatic fittings (transitions, bends, etc) as well as regeneration when you shift a portion of your distribution system. Watch out in the next release!

A wonderful interview! The amazing thing about the Blender-like open source model is that, once a critical mass of users and contributors is reached, the small players in the industry begin to benefit both practically and financially. That, in turn, leads to feed back-finance for the project, either in cash or in kind. While Llyod seeks to only financially benefit marginally from external paid courses the expertise he develops and the resources he produces for the community contribute to a better, more featured product that he can use competitively in his own architecture practice.

Thanks for all the work you (and of course the BlenderBIM team) do! I have a tiny one person practice in New Zealand and the cost of software is prohibitive. BlenderBIM and your tutorials have made a massive difference to me and I am now using exclusively BlenderBIM for my work. I'll be eyeing up a ticket to your BlenderBIM workshop!

Wow, Jonny! What you just shared is so powerful! Thank you for sharing this, people must understand that the only thing limiting them from breaking free from proprietary tools is not investing a little bit of time to learn a new tool. The BlenderBIM masterclass is coming, sooner than you might think, so stay tuned for that!

There are some things which i doubt about blender- 1. Blender dont do exact Boolean operation when two surface are exactly on each other, it is not a problem in 3ds max. 2. Blender may not have precision range as high as any CAD software has. Like if we model 4mm sheet and at the same time, make large terrains in the same project then blender may give inaccurate measurement. Other software like rhino solve this by setting up project for small object or for large terrain in the template option. 3. Even if a single person shift to blenderBIM there are people in your team who will prefer autodesk workflow like drafting in autocad, modelling in revit, visualisation in 3ds max and so on.
@BIMvoice

Not everyone should switch to BBIM. The most important aspect is that people who want to do it, have alternatives. That's the whole point, which now is proven to be feasible.
@rajendrameena150

@@BIMvoice I literally want BBIm to used everywhere because in our country, purchasing revit license is very costly for single person and I think the software should not be the limitation of creativity, I tried blender 2.79 and uninstalled it in 4 days but after the release of 2.8 and blender guru donut series, I use blender till now.

The BlenderBIM Add-on actually bypasses Blender and only uses Blender as the interface. It uses IfcOpenShell and OpenCASCADE as the geometry kernel - this means that it does do exact solid modeling and boolean operations. It also has its own definition of precision as defined in IFC.
