Having grown up with reggae music in London (used to chat on small sound systems) as a teen during the early 80s I have to say that both Coxsone sound system and David Rodigan were instrumental in my reggae education. Most reggae loving people I know used to listen to Rodigan on Capital radio while getting ready to go to a dance or club from 10 pm to Midnight. He introduced many of us to artists like Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy, the great dub engineer Scientist, King Jammys tunes, Johnny Osborne, Junior Delgado and the list goes on and on. Remember at the time reggae was hardly played on the radio in London so he was and still is an important person so far as reggae is concerned. We all want reggae to reach all over the world and Rodigan has done good work so far as that is concerned. His genuine love of reggae cannot be disputed and I am not going to cuss him out on the net when he has done good works. So far as I am concerned the fact that Rodigan is white makes no difference to me and anyone who is hating on him just for being white is no better than the KKK.At the same time Lloyd Coxsone brings up some good points that I agree with. He played his sound all over the UK in any weather, in any city, any venue, etc and really did do all the things that he said during this interview, I know because I lived in London at the time. I remember going to some 'death in the area' dances with Coxsone v Saxon and in the early 80s Coxsone would play some tunes that not even sounds in Jamaica had, true. He did the hard non glamorous work behind the scenes to make his name whereas Rodigan is essentially a very professional radio reggae man who brings a different flavor to presenting reggae. The real truth is that they both deserve an award for different reasons and have put in the work in different ways although more doors may be open to Rodigan business wise because he is white. Coxsone mentions many sound systems that used to play back in the day and they all deserve respect but many non black nationalities never would come to a sound dance and Rodigan may reach them more to introduce them to reggae music. Real reggae music (drum, bass, rid-dim guitar, etc) to this day is not accepted as a 1st class music so we need to spread it as wide as we can throughout the world. Final thought - Great Singers that stuggled for years(who sang lovers/ roots/ dance-hall) with real reality lyrics like Dennis Brown, Gregory Issacs, Barry Brown, etc should have been millionaires before passing on.. Britney Spears has no real lyrics, ,bubble gum pop with dance routines but can retire now with her riches, not hating but its true.

Nice points. I moved down to London for university studies in the mid-1980s and also listened to Rodigan on Capital radio while getting ready to hit some dance, somewhere in London. Yes, You're right, Coxsone does deserve some kind of recognized reward for his efforts over the years. However, it is my opinion that Coxsone is an intensely jealous man. For example. he had a pop at Rodigan as soon as Rodigan was honoured and more recently he has had a pop at Blacker Dread on the very same day Brixton came together to honour Blacker. Jah Shaka (RIP) to my knowledge never received any kind of honour, despite plying his trade as long or even longer than Coxsone, I cannot re-call Shaka moaning about people on social media despite this. I guess Shaka was just a classier person than Lloyd Coxsone.

STFU. What load of nonsense. David Rodigan challenged Lloyd Coxsone to prove where he said he was Godfather of reggae. He has never said that. It was a journalist that said that on live TV. Lloyd until has not come back with any proof. He is just a bitter old man.

Did he proclaim it ? ....or was it a label put upon him ? I mean ,holywood sold 'the hateful 8' as "Tarantino's masterpiece " but really it was a shit film and it's up to audiences to decide over a long period of time. A classic is not born deliberately. Rodigan, did he declare he was the godfather ? Something tells me he didn't. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Embarrassing old man. Such a shame to be so bitter at this age. David Rodigan has gone through doors that we of a darker hue couldn't and held them open. He is recognised 'internationally' for doing so. David Rodigan in the UK is what Barry G was in Jamaica. The aforementioned sound systems were at most regional, though integral and essential to the movement. As a second generation Jamaican in the UK I am embarrassed of this and want Mr Rodigan to know the majority do not support this racist rhetoric. Love you for all your achievements Lloydie. I hope you work through whatever you're going through.

@@angieD9674 Hi, I was intending to reply to the original statement by @Norm Murray. I was so incense that the word racist was used to call out a great black icon in favour of a white man. When I listened to reggae music in the 70's there was no Rodigan. Just Coxsone, Sofeno B, Shaka, Neville the enchanter, Fat Man, etc.

Hear yee!! Hear yee!! All bonfied reggae fans, witness the evolution of the latest parasite to afflict the black communities and specifically the reggae fraternity. Despite his acclaimed love of reggae music and his claim to fame through his involvement with reggae,Radigan has never actively promoted an up coming reggae artiest. Never actively involved himself in the promotion of reggae music to combat the racism and prejudice our music encountered and is still encountering from the raciest media including the BBC. He never put together his own reggae sound system and offered a black youth a job. Instead he’s traveled the world using his white face to gain entry an status playing well known reggae songs following giving some historical background of the artiest an the tune. It seems his main aim has always been to exploit gullible black people,an profit from our music as a so called”authority, since whenever an wherever he’s involved he’s getting paid. Now that he’s found favour with the BBC benefiting from his white privilege. Favour that many of our black reggae hero’s from Birmingham no less couldn’t hope to find.(RIP Erskine T,)DJPilot,Music master,Quaker City, lord Christopher,to name a few. So he’s taking reggae to the royal Albert hall to seek the approval of people in high places,I think? The irony, reggae! the most popular music of the exploited, the dispossessed, the downtrodden. The music of former slaves being played at the Royal Albert hall, a place where slaver owners, and they’re patrons gathered to temporally forget the evil they were inflecting on humanity.truly,I really do need to question, does reggae music need this platform, does reggae need the BBC. Reggae is bigger now than it has ever been, despite the criminalisation of those who played an promoted the music, tens of thousands of records confiscated by the police and the DTI are still in their possession,or sold on they’re behalf. There is more reggae sound system’s in Ethiopia than there has ever being in Jamaica an the uk together, reggae stars can go to Kenya,Ghana,South Africa, Zimbabwe,Nigeria and earn tens of thousands sterling for one gig.Not to mention South an North America and the Caribbean. Reggae music and black people have achieved this despite the arrogance and raciest attitudes of the white media over fifty years towards the music. So as a people are we going to allow this parasite Radigan an the BBC to take our monies from the pockets of our real reggae heroes . I say reggae has done without the BBC an Britain’s raciest media and can still now do without them.i say I will go to the Albert Hall when Coxon an Quaker City, an lord Christopher an stereo Classic is playing my reggae music an parasites like Radigan is on the bill,at their discretion.peace 👊🏾

The Godfather of Reggae globally is Lee Scratch Perry. The man that owns the sound is not necessarily the man that plays the sound. The selector and DJ determine how good the sound is. Rodigan liked the music and was able to play to a wider audience. He played his part. Respect to all who was willing to promote reggae music. The BBC didn't want to play reggae as they found it too aggressive. Because of the Blues dance and venues playing reggae the music was spread but Rodigan took this further. Instead of bickering over who is godfather we need to find places to stage reggae music in London as most of the venues have closed down. Then we will find out who is who.
