February 17, 1995. Tom Snyder interviewed author Harlan Ellison, although it was less of an interview and more the verbal equivalent of chaos theory. These two are just great at swapping stories and jokes.

So great not having a whooping demented audience and just hearing the stage crew enjoying themselves.

Yeah, imagine if this happened today: everyone would laugh at every sentence and the interviewer would reach for jokes like crazy!

I think Tom talking to Harlan are simply some of the best television talk EVER. Harlan was wonderfully neurotic and unpredictable. He also had mind that would go at the speed of sound almost 24/7.

I was fortunate enough to meet Harlan a number of times and actually got to have lunch with him and his wife Susan once and he was just as lively, funny and witty as he is here. RIP, pal.

I owned the Houston bookstore he refers to at about 32 minutes. I don't blame him for exaggerating to make the story more interesting, but in fact he signed for 3 hours (as previously arranged) not 4. He signed about 50 extra books for store stock, not 250. After purchasing the new book he was promoting, customers were allowed to get 3 or 4 extra books signed, not boxes full. We took him out for lunch and dinner, and he had break time during the signing. He was always pleasant and outgoing with customers and store staff. He wrote me afterwards thanking me for "the glorious signing ... I'll never forget you and I'm looking forward to returning." Sadly, he never made it back, and the store went out of business a few years later.

bradfrank007 + Hello, I'm enjoying a laugh here for I commented about this book signing at another KZfaq Harlin site. This would be the ' Future Visions' book store correct? Oh mercy, what a day that was..I still can recall his entrance, I was waiting near the front door when he breezed in wearing a long coat with a Denny's button in one of his lapels ( that caught my eye), and not to be rude but he was shorter than I expected, we made brief eye contact as he scanned the store. And yes, Harlin was laying it a bit thick with the exaggerations such as his fingers cramping from all the signing and no one bringing him any water, Oh Brother ( laughing ). I did experience his famous temperament, not at me, but directed at the young woman standing in front of me. A Very Heated argument incurred over the States of Virginia and West Virginia, she muttered that it was really one state, not two, and Harlin quickly reminded her.." No it isn't, and she quickly replied, .."Yea, it is... It ended quickly, with her storming off and me to face the aftermath, I just wanted to tell him what his writings meant to me, but ( sigh ). So it goes.. peace

Whatever else you may want to say: these two guys were wonderfully sardonic, witty, quick, and articulate. thanks for sharing this little known masterpiece. Harlan was such a genius and a true maverick. I hope he found and made a soft and safe landing. For Harlan and Tom Turkey: rest in peace, weary warriors. rest in peace.

@greyeyed1232 жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, he's talking about the singing group from the 1940s called "Day, Dawn, and Dusk", featuring Bob Caver, Gus Simons, and Ed Coleman. I tried searching the one lyric he gave to try to determine the song, but I couldn't find it. They seemed to sing songs described as a mixture of R&B, Jazz, pop, classical, and country. That's all I could find.

I have never understood the appeal of Tom Snyder, although I loved Dan Akyroyd' impression on old school SNL. Tom is like your really goofy and out-of-touch Uncle who seems unwilling to do his homework and due diligence; however, when someone or something falls into his sphere of limited interests he is fine and probably great for the wee hours of the morning.
