An interesting and well-shot selection of proper WCML power (skodas apart!) the 304s are a real treat. Wish I'd had a camcorder in those days...!

0:30 and thereabouts ... Intriguing to see the Mk3A SLEPs and Motorail GUVs included in this formation. IWCA or West Coast Main Line duty with Class 87 IWCA / IWPA haulage. 1:54 Hornby model released in late 1988 but this didn't have 'Northampton Town' nameplates which 86401 picked up in July 1989. Got this one still. Overall what fantastic memories from what's rapidly becoming a bygone era. These were the days though!

Good old class 304s, old bone shakers that they were, lots of character to them

Does anyone know which trains the ones shown are? Especially the 86 hauled one at about 4:20 - it looks like some sort of Cross-Country service, but the formation lokks a bit special (Mk2 BFK, Mk1 RBR, 5 TSOs) - is this possibly the 'Clansman' but without its Motorail cars?

Cross Country yes but not 'The Clansman' as consists used on ICXC services at this time were quite decrepid in terms of what stock was thrown together to form them! Only in 1992 were the seven Mk2D and Mk2E/F 'Aircons' standardised upon putting an end to antiquated stock such as non 'Aircon' Mk2A and Mk2B / Mk1 RFB and RBR being deployed resulting in massive aesthetic improvements. These OY (Oxley) and DY (Derby) rakes were commonly 1 x Mk2E RFM (1st class and catering) / 5 x Mk2D to Mk2F TSO (Std class Open) / 1 x Mk2D to Mk2F BSO (Std class Open Brake) if not Mk1 NHA (Gangwayed Full Brake) unless running in short formation. The Mk2D stock however was gone by 1995 IIRC. Motorail Services did run via ICXC - I remember seeing one from Birmingham N St to Glasgow and Edinburgh in early 1992 as it called at Macclesfield.

Clansman started out as about load 12 or 13 i think but by 91 it may well have been watered down. Not sure when the Clansman finally got culled. I miss that service.......does seem a lot of mixed but short formations in this era probably XC. My days on the WCML you tended to have a minimum of load 10.

Arh....you can almost smell the whiff of arcing from the overheads.....brake dust and hearing the wailing of ac motors.........87s and mk3s......premier WCML traction.

Can't think of one loco that looked good in NSE livery - especially the 'white window' version. EMUs. DMUs and coaches? Yes ...Locos? No

86401 repainted in April 1987 and named 'Northampton Town' in June 1989. Carried livery (only 25 kV Overhead Electric to do so) and name until painted into Rail Express Systems colours during 1993. Operating history in NSE colours: 1987 to 1989 Northampton Line NSE out of London Euston or borrowed for Inter-City WCML duties. Based Willesden (WN) until transferred to Crewe (CE) during late 1989 and Parcels Sector operation retaining NSE livery and name. Parcels became Rail Express Systems in September 1991 and 86401 gained this livery during heavy maintenance performed in 1993. Interestingly one of Virgin West Coast's final four Class 87s (87012) carried NSE colours in recognition of 86401 during 2005 ... But it was incorrectly painted in 'Revised' NSE Livery instead of the correct 'Original' style! Hornby produced an unnamed OO Gauge model of 86401 in NSE colours which I still have.

I think this video really emphasises how much better B.R was compared to the utterly rubbish rail companies we now have!
