The assembly and welding are amazingly practical. I just watched a video of an Engineer building a stove performing calculations, using robots for both cutting and welding the armor. And with a cost for whoever wants to buy it of 1000 usd.. Yours is not only great but extremely economical and with similar features...you even make your own food there. Incredible.

Barrel drums were common in the NWT, and the Yukon. They lasted several years. This fellow took the barrel to a new level. Great heater.

It's great to hear that you appreciate the innovation in using barrel drums as heaters. Repurposing these drums into heaters can be an efficient way to create warmth in cold climates such as the Northwest Territories (NWT) and the Yukon. They can indeed last for several years if used and maintained properly. Taking the barrel drum to a new level with enhancements and modifications can improve its efficiency and extend its lifespan even further. It's always inspiring to see creativity in turning everyday materials into useful and innovative solutions!

For those who think that it cannot withstand that barrel, it lasts a long time, here in Argentina it is used to make grills and stoves too. But this stove is incredible. Good job!

The idea is good but the Exekution is really bad from my opinion i work 25 years with metal though i know what good metal work is .
@danielanthony9621
@danielanthony9621 2 күн бұрын
Most of the video viewers have never worked with metal or they are just starting out. Ive worked with metal all my life! Both in welding and forging. You say the idea is good but the execution is not. Thats an unneeded comment. For what is being accomplished his execution is fine. I dont recall him saying he is the foremost expert in the field of metal work. He's a guy very much like most who enjoys what he's doing and likes to share. If you think the execution is not good then at least share how it could be better so that we can all learn from your expertise. Just saying.

Line the fire box (exposed to the direct flames) of the barrel with ~1 inch of clay/sand mix. This improves combustion a lot and protects the thin sheet metal. The hot air tubes however will deteriorate quickly.
@lmtn
@lmtn 5 ай бұрын
Great suggestion! Lining the firebox with a clay/sand mix is a smart move-it not only enhances combustion but also provides protection to the thin sheet metal. However, your point about the hot air tubes deteriorating quickly is valid. Considering more durable materials or implementing a protective coating for the tubes could be a good addition. Thanks for sharing your insights and helping improve the design! 🔥🏭👍

Why would cast iron tubes deteriorate quickly? Fireplaces have metal vent louvers in the direct line of flame and they do not deteriorate. Grills have metal grates exposed to continuous flame and they do not deteriorate. Smokers are also built from 5 gal drums and they do not burn through.

The problem with most of these kinds of stoves is that they are taking heated air from inside the structure that you've already warmed up and putting it up to chimney because obviously combustion needs air. it would be really good if it had an outside source of air so you won't be sucking cold air in every crack or door jam to replace the air that goes up the chimney. Even some high end tents now come with a round silicone hole near the bottom for outside combustion air.
@lmtn
@lmtn Ай бұрын
That's a valid concern. Ensuring an outside source of air for combustion is important for efficiency and to prevent the stove from pulling in cold air from inside the structure. This can be achieved by incorporating an air intake duct that draws air from outside directly into the combustion chamber. It's a feature commonly found in modern heating systems to improve efficiency and comfort. Thank you for highlighting this important aspect of stove design.

Really enjoy your content. Very informative, fun presentation and inspiring. Have you looked into powering the fan with thermoelectric generator for a more closed loop system? Also, how would an waste oil burner do with the guage of the 55 gal drum like you have here?
@lmtn
@lmtn 5 ай бұрын
"Thanks for your positive feedback! I'm glad you're enjoying the content. Using a thermoelectric generator for the fan is a great idea, and it could indeed enhance the system's efficiency. As for the waste oil burner with the 55-gallon drum, the gauge of the drum can impact its performance. Thicker drums might be more durable and heat-resistant, potentially extending the lifespan of the burner. If you're planning to experiment, make sure to test and monitor the system for safety and efficiency. Keep the great ideas coming, and stay tuned for more exciting projects!"

Yes I was going to add that there is research that supports that. In that it’s best to separate the burn chamber from the heat exchanger to get the most complete burn of the wood. And to get the most heat out of the exhaust. So if an insulated inner pipe or box was added, and a secondary burn shelf with the burn chamber exhaust exit at the front then across the heat exchanger to the back it would make the appliance more efficient. adding refractory cement around the heat exchanger tubes would add thermo mass with its benefits. Few simple things that would reduce the amount of wood needed to burn. Great video

Absolutely, your research-backed suggestions make a lot of sense! Separating the burn chamber from the heat exchanger for a more complete wood burn is a fantastic idea. The addition of an insulated inner pipe or box, along with a secondary burn shelf, could significantly enhance the efficiency of the appliance. Routing the exhaust across the heat exchanger as you described is a smart approach to extracting maximum heat. And incorporating refractory cement around the heat exchanger tubes adds valuable thermal mass. These thoughtful modifications not only improve efficiency but also contribute to reducing wood consumption. Your insights are spot-on, and I appreciate your contribution to making heating systems more effective and eco-friendly. Keep up the great work! 🔥🌿

We had a cheap woodstove where i worked, and the top and bottom were cast iron, and the sheet metal shell was very thin steel. It lasted for years. A layer of tiles bedded in mortar would make this stove last a decade, and only needed in the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 of the drum.
@lmtn
@lmtn 4 ай бұрын
That's a great suggestion! Adding a layer of tiles bedded in mortar to the bottom section of the drum could indeed help improve the durability and longevity of the stove. The added thermal mass from the tiles would contribute to better heat retention and distribution, making the stove more efficient. This approach can also help protect the thin steel sheet metal from excessive heat, reducing the risk of warping or damage over time. It's a practical and cost-effective way to enhance the performance and lifespan of your DIY wood stove. Thank you for sharing this valuable tip!

I'm no expert on air flow and the effects of altering them, but could you extend one or more of the "exhaust" pipes and connect it to an insulated one going to another room? Seems the biggest hurdle with wood stoves and such is heat distribution. Granted you're not going to heat a 5 or 6 room home but maybe 2 or 3 rooms?
@lmtn
@lmtn 5 ай бұрын
"Great observation! Extending the exhaust pipes and connecting them to insulated ducts leading to other rooms is a smart idea for improving heat distribution. This way, you could potentially channel the heat generated by the system to multiple rooms, making it more efficient in heating a larger area. Just ensure proper insulation to minimize heat loss during the transfer. Experimenting with different configurations can help optimize the system for your specific needs. Thanks for the suggestion, and feel free to share any more ideas you may have!"

@lmtn
@lmtn 5 ай бұрын
I appreciate your curiosity! The fan in the back is designed to improve air circulation and heat distribution. While you correctly observed that there are no visible holes in the back for air intake, it's possible that there are concealed vents or channels that allow air to be drawn in. The fan then helps push the heated air into the room, promoting more effective heating. If the creator didn't provide details on this aspect in the video, you might consider asking them directly for more information about the design and functionality of the fan system.

It's an interesting idea to repurpose this design into a rocket stove or a similar heating device. Welding the cap back over the tubes could potentially create a more controlled combustion process and increase efficiency. However, it would require some modifications and testing to ensure it works effectively and safely for its intended purpose. If you decide to try such a modification, be sure to take all necessary safety precautions and consider the potential risks and benefits. Always prioritize safety when working with heating and combustion devices.

I have no doubt this increases your efficiency. I wonder if a winding loop parallel and against the fan pipe in many places would also exchange more of its heat before it is lost out the chimney. Maybe it would a waste of time. I've seen people have snaking chimneys on the the interior which will allow more heat to be extract from the exhaust. Moving room air with a fan through tubes adjacent or inside a stove surely improves efficiency.

NIce Video..but how long can the thin sheet metal of the barrel withstand the scorching heat?
@lmtn
@lmtn 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question! The durability of the thin sheet metal used in a barrel or similar setup can vary depending on several factors, including the thickness of the metal, the quality of the material, and the intensity of the heat. In general, thin sheet metal may not withstand scorching heat for an extended period, and over time, it can become damaged or warped due to the high temperatures. To improve the longevity of such a setup, you might consider using thicker or more heat-resistant materials, like cast iron or refractory materials, which are better suited to withstand intense heat. It's important to monitor the condition of the metal over time and take necessary precautions to ensure safety and efficiency.
