Load of Hay | Buying Hay Bales for Feeding Heifers

We feed our heifers some silage but their main feed is hay and they eat a lot of it.
As a dairy farm, we strive to make the highest quality feed for our dairy cows, which can sometimes be too nutritious for other categories; heifers and dry cows. So we decided to buy some lower quality (lower nutrition) hay from a nearby farmer.
I took our John Deere 5085M and Farmtech trailer. We loaded 5 bales and brought them home where we set up our hay blower and put hay above the cow barn, where we store the rest of our hay. That way we will be able to mix it with our own hay and is also more convinient for us to have all the hay in the same storage, rather than feeding whole bales.

Nice work. It's always good to know that you've allowed for a bit extra feed. You never know what winter will bring. That bale have the dog a bit of a surprise!

Great video! I always like watching you hook on trailer as we don't have that hitch here only pick up hitches with a hook so we don't need hydraulic stands on trailers. But your hitch looks much stronger. They look nice bales of hay! Is it grass hay? How much are they making over there... €20-25?

Yes but I guess it is quicker and easier to hook it up with your hitches 😀 They are, just a bit older hay in them 😉 Yes, grass hay, 20 € 👍

Najbolje nam odgovara ako je svo sijeno uskladišteno na jednom mjestu. Ovo sijeno ćemo pomiješat s našim za junice 😉

Great video as always! A couple of questions: 1) Wow! You have an Alfa Romeo GT! Nice, is it yours? I have a 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce :) 2) Why did you load the bales like that? Why not lower the whole side of the trailer and put them 2x2 (2 by 2)? Or are the bales too big? 3) Nice to see your dad still active! Did he start the farm back in the day, from scratch? Thanks. 1) Yes, it is the diesel version though, 1.9, but chipped to around 180 hp and a LOT of torque for this kind of engine 😉 oh wow, that's awesome! 😃 2) Yeah they would stick over the side pretty bad but I only needed 5 of them anyway, so I left trailer sides on 😀 3) Yes, he is a great help 😉 No, he took over from his dad, and his dad took over from his... 😃 Thank you! 🙂

Very interesting video and hay storage system. I like it a lot. I’d be interested in trying something similar with buying round bales and then putting them up loose in my hay loft. What is the name and manufacturer of the machine you use to vacuum the hay up. I’ve seen seen forage blowers before but your machine seems more like a big vacuum. I’m in the U.S so it might not be something we have over here. Thanks

Thanks 🙂 it's made by Mawek company, from Switzerland I think... 🤔 Yes, it creates vacuum so it's pretty easy filling the hay in. At the other end is a swivel tube that also moves forward and back for spreading hay evenly. We also have hay dryer from the same company, which blows cold air under hay for drying it further. 1763,2 😉 It did in the beginning with blown hydraulic pump gasket and malfunction of powrReverser but it was repaired under warranty and is working fine since then 🙂

Kosimo samo jednom godišnje, u proljeće, prije nego što posadimo kukuruz. Odjeljak bi trebao sadržavati oko 10 tona suhe tvari po hektaru 🤔

Our country is kind of in lockdown and there are still a lot of daily infected people. But agricultural stores are open so there isn't much difference for us who live and work on a farm. I got over the disease in October...

Sorry, yeah I try to use both but when I'm working the easiest way to film is with head cam, that way you can also see what I see... But I understand it can be hard to watch for some people 🤔
