what a awsome recovery truck ! -- did that same job in 1968 in the uk on the side of a main road ,they had changed over a sick tractor and the new one dropped the fully loaded trailer--the legs bent the chassis up about 1ft ------- so that the front was about 2ft off the road(and on a angle due to the camber ) ------ took a LOT longer than 20 mins:-)

11 years of driving and i always looked at the jaws make sure i see them closed

I was a truck pusher at a vacuum company and had one driver dropped a vacuum trailer off 5-wheel and bent the crossbar, lucky I operated all equipment in yard. When I seen this, I was pissed, because the driver did not say anything about it. What I did is got our white/western star winch pole truck, put hook around kingpin, and lifted it up so I can lower legs. Just like you Ron, no damage done. I missed that job, it was fun. Same thing happened to me in the UK in the late 80's. The landing gear stripped but we where lucky as the unit had run up guide ramps and we could push back under the trailer, good job too as it was a full load of wine.

Love the vids Ron! Especially the drivers eye view while driving the 1150 big dog. Spent 25 years behind the wheel of my old long nose petey wagon. Now i'm old disabled in a wheelchair. SURE brings back memories look'n out that windshield while you are driving. I had a spinner mounted on the cross bar of my steering wheel. Perfectly legal so long as it is NOT attached to the hand ring, and no part protrudes past said ring. Makes maneuvering way easier in tight spaces and backing.

I've had to re-hook a few times, and have learned NEVER to trust a quick pull always get out and look.

That was AWSOME. First time I saw a tow truck with digital controls. I was impressed. I thought the payments on my car were a lot, I can't imagine what the cost of the tow truck would be. It's nice to have an easy job once in a while. Very nice equipment.

My Grandfather bought and greatly expanded a towing business in Glendale California back in the late 50s and 60s and his stories and old photos of what he did were always super interesting to me as a kid. Even now at 35 I'm still fascinated by the towing industry. Dunno if I'd have the stomach to work injury/casualty wrecks but the run of the mill tow jobs would be pretty interesting.

when I had this happen to me before I would roll down the fillet legs, then dumped the air when the bags was flat start putting 4x4's on the frame rails then lift that roll the fillet legs then next back under and go, but then again I am old school , great video Ron thanks for sharing

I was amazed at the technology packed into your recovery vehicle and I am thinking you would not believe the ancient, almost pre-historic in comparison compared to yours, trucks we have over here in the west of Ireland! "I heard it latch and the handle was in. Big assumption. Every time I release the tractor brakes I tug on the trailer to assure the 5th wheel is locked. EVERY TIME.

As a Trucker for 24 years, i have had my share of missteps, screwups, etc, you need a routine, which i hate, but, as a trucker, routine will keep you out of trouble, shit happens! Nice recovery, always check the locking Jaw, visually, I always do!

Hey Ron, tell that driver that it happens sometimes. At a job I was working a few years ago, a driver with 30 years experienced hooked one of our step decks in front of me (a CDL rookie) and another CDL with about 4 years experience. All three of us saw the click, saw the handle go in, watched him do his pull test, and everything. He hits a dirt hill at the end of the driveway with a nasty right turn, and bam, the step deck comes right off his tractor. We have no idea why.

ALWAYS double check, especially if you've left your vehicle for even a couple of minutes. We had a problem at one of our local truck stops where an operator was sneakily pulling the pin on random trucks. Drivers were leaving their trailers behind, nose down, when they pulled away. The idiot was seen on security cameras but could not be identified. I hate to say it but you can't trust everyone.

That is one fine looking wrecker! It is a good thing this happened at the dock instead of on the road.

Love how the driver was actually handling his business and not just being a spectator. Yea I know, not much work to be done or a big deal, but you'd be surprised how inept some of them drivers I see out there are...smh

Years ago I had a heck of a time hooking up to a trailer. I could hear the fifth wheel lock, give it a tug and it would not lock. I did it about 4 times, was frustrated and thought the latch was broken. Then I took a breather and settled down, took a better look at the fifth wheel and found the latch handle was catching on the frame, on one of the bolt heads. A quick adjustment to the handle and it was fixed.

I never get sick of watch that machine in action. I make an awful employee cuz I'd just stand there slack jaw'd watching it run. Stay safe, Jay

Ron, My driver/friend Joey shared a video that showed a truck on the road towing three trailers. It had come detached and was only being held in place by the frame. It was not obvious to me what was going on in the video until Joey pointed it out. I searched and found this video to understand how that fifth wheel and king pin works mechanically. Thank you for your explanation! I love your rig!!

I have had this happen to me. The lock audibly locked, looked good, but came apart when I tugged. It happened a couple times. Turns out the salt from winter was drying out the linkage below the plate. A bunch of spray oil did the trick. Your cool demeanor and humble approach is what makes you successful. Good video.

Very well done. I'm impressed at how much computers and electronic controls are used in that fancy rig. When I drove trucks, the tow vehicles were practically stone-age compared to tour rig. I just HAD to subscribe.

Great recovery Ron. That guys hands were tied & he needed a lift. You got the lift charge + a little maintenance work on the job that keeps your shop busy. Everybody says it's never happened to them, huh. I dropped a few trailers in my time, but was lucky enough to have the landing gear working, & was able to recover myself. Each time it happened I swore I was hooked up. The 5th wheel is a complex item & has a lot more to it than a locking arm. It has a lot of moving parts that are internal & can not be seen to the eye. Folks need to keep that in mind.

I was watching a video awhile back and it showed a person sneak back to where a rig was parked and pulled the unlock handle for the 5th wheel plate and ran off. Thankfully a driver of onother truck saw it and ran over from his rig just as the driver of the Tampered was going to get in his to drive off. They scrounged up some timbers and blocked the trailer wheels he pulled the trailer backs and rocked the tractor back and locked the 5th pin back in place

There use to be a “Fontane “ fifth wheel that was notorious for coming released for no reason. Holland equipment is the best, they have a locking device. Never had a problem with this equipment.

That is one awesome tow vehicle. I assume there is a coffee maker in one of those boxes LOL. One of the benefits of being an owner-operator among the many, is working on your own rig but not for saving money, rather for the purpose of learning and knowing how things work and the ability to make self roadside repairs if the need arises. One of those repairs two years ago was rebuild of 5th wheel assembly to include mounting bushings, springs, and lock-jaws. I know the sound and the feel of a properly locking 5th wheel but I still take a peek underneath to verify. Working on ones own equipment these days is unheard of and most drivers of this generation don't even know how to raise the hood to perform the simplest of checks. I made a note to myself earlier today that it seems most people ie; car drivers and truck drivers alike wait until they are broke down on side of road before performing or having any maintenance done whatsoever. When I learned to drive trucks more than 3 decades ago, we were required to learn to repair own trucks (company) including all services or else you didn't work. This meant brake jobs, clutch adjust, tire repair or replace, lights, electrical, you know the drill. Everything I learned back then serves me today as an owner-operator. I know every square inch of my truck including sounds and what things feel like good or bad. I'm good at what I do because of those who taught me.

All these comments talking about the driver gets under my skin. I’m sure though none of them have never made any mistakes. It doesn’t matter what profession you’re in there will be mistakes made. Sometimes it only takes one to learn but we’ve all made mistakes in our fields of business

Very entertaining video since I use to drive for MS Logistics. That happened to a few drivers with the Volvos that had the Jost fifth wheels.

That's why some truckers carry 4x4 & 2x4 wood blocks. Just lower your air bags then place blocks under trailor air your bags lower your legs and repeat.

Saw that happen to a trainee ( 3rd week out) at our mini yard in Conn. ...set of doubles did fine disconnecting back unit and con gear....oops forgot to lower landing gear and pulled out from under..had a fork lift inside ...broke loose and went right through the nose of the pup(trailer)...A) where was his trainer and B) that's a hard way to unload your freight.

I enjoy these videos a lot, they show real pride in your craft. The last "tow shows" I have seen were reality TV stuff in California and another in Canada. I hate them because it sensationalizes everything and makes hype where there should be calm. Operation Repo, and a few others just make the whole towing industry look bad.

I have zero interest in becoming a driver or anything like that. KZfaq recommended one of your videos and i watched the whole thing for some reason. Probably because i love to learn about everything. But i wanted to say you seem to be a good guy from what the camera shows. Doing your job but also doing it with a smile on and safety in mind. Saving some of these drivers from being out of a job or being laughed at. I'm sure what you do is not easy. But youre the reason we have food in grocery stores. So i appreciate you for that.
