Hi everyone, I always get asked to make a video of the way I load a quilt onto my Handi Quilter frame and now that I am stuck home, I have the time to make one. This is just the way I load a quilt, it doesn't mean that it is the best way. There are always more than 1 way to do things, this just happens to be the way I like to do it.
Thank you so much for watching!
Be sure to subscribe to my channel for more videos and hit the bell icon for alerts to when new content is posted.
Some of the items I talk about in the video:
Handi Quilter Handi Hammock
HQ Pole Cradles
HQ Super Leader
Handi Helper Magnetic Pin Bowl
HQ Long Arm Quilting Pins

To keep your leader on the top bar, or any bar, manageable, try using children's "slap bracelets". Just slap them around the bar and they'll keep your leader wrapped up tight. Easy on and easy off.

This video was a total game changer for me! I just pulled my latest queen quilt off my frame and I am so happy as to how it came out! Best ever! I started and stopped this video as I was loading the quilt top, batting, and backing to make sure I got it just right. Not only was the burrito technique helpful, everything was so detailed you almost can't get it wrong. In the past I have had bunching of the backing, wonky overlapping of my binding due to stretching, and all kinds of issues. This quilt top had lots of angled piecing (Scott Flanagan's "Warmth of our Stars" in flannel) and I didn't want it to to suffer the same fate as my other quilts have. This time.....flawless! Yeah! I'm going to watch all your other videos now as time permits. Thanks Adam!

FANTASTICO! This is so step by step,= easy peasy to follow to perfection. WOW. I really need this! TU so much! I am the 2nd owner of my HQ frame and Avante! I am so not knowing how to properly load my frame, but I have done it one time. I don't even know if my leaders are on straight! I have not even used all of the poles and wondered WHAT the 4th pole was even used for??? This is really going to help me to do everything properly! I also have the snappers. Mine are blue. I like your idea of the plumb line. Your batting is so unwrinkled, and you fold it so evenly! I will look at the red snapper video that you made. Going to check out my leaders now to see if they are on straight. Thank you again. I don't know how you knew the subject of: LOADING, was such a stickler for so many... It seems like I avoid my machine use because of this usual mess(with me) of my questionable loading technique. It starts with the leaders! They have to be on straight.

Loved your video. I load the front bars just as you do. I was always taught to pin so the pins are on the leader side which will prevent fraying of the fabric. With your method, the pins on the back of the backing are on the fabric side. No problem if you’re using the self-identify, but I’d be concerned of fraying using your method.
@adamsewfun.
@adamsewfun. 3 жыл бұрын
I have never heard not to pin into the fabric and it's actually the preferred way we recommend to pin the back leader on. The way I do it, it keeps the "seam" of the leader and fabric pointed up, so I can see everything. I will keep an eye out in my classes and see if anyone has ever had that issue.

No. We sent that back and got a Juki home machine. Not a long arm. The frame has only 2 bars and has been a trial loading . Your video is going to make loading my quilts so much easier, even though i only have the 2 bars. My next watch will be the one using the red snappers. Hey, I know this video is 4 years old, but I wanted to ask you a question. I have a Grace Majestic frame. It’s about 9 years old. It doesn’t have an Idler bar. I noticed your frame has a nice one, like most of the newer frames. My husband is going to try to modify mine. My question finally. How far off your machine bed does that Idler bar sit? I know with my frame, every time I roll up the quilt, after quilting, I have to raise my take up bar. Supposed to be able to put your fingers under the quilt roll. I sometimes forget and that gets pretty heavy. I have RA, so I don’t have a lot of strength. That’s where I usually mess up and end up picking the out the mess. So the Idler bar will really help, because I don’t think you have to adjust it at all. If you could let me know, I would sure appreciate it. I probably could find out if you don’t get this, so thanks anyway. Great video

Thanks for a great video. Question. How do you get your batting so smooth before putting it on there? It looked like it was pressed as it looked so good. Thank you

The light bar is call the HQ HighLight system. They come in 5, 8/10, and 12 feet. They are stand alone, so you don't even have to have a long arm to use them. I'm thinking about getting the 5 foot to go over my domestic machine. The hammock is called the Handi Hammock, it just attaches to some knobs on the sides of the machine and I LOVE IT. I bought it day one it was out and haven't looked back. It's strong enough to hold the weight of two layers of batting cut for a king size quilt.

Hi, Adam! Do you have a easy way for loading when the frame is setup in clear view mode? I have an Amara and feel like clear view gives me a little more throat space. Second, my PSA for the day - I bought magnetic badge holders on the “Big A” shopping sight and use the magnetic portion to hold the edge of my leaders to keep them from flapping around and getting in my way. They’re not pretty like the ones sold as sewing notions, but are inexpensive enough that I got enough to give a few to my friends with longarms.

Joanne, another video on the list of ones to make. I don’t use Clear View that much, so have to think of an easy way to do it.

Thank you for sharing. I recently got a King Quilter 2 Elite. The lady I started following floats the top & doesn’t load the quilt top. I love how she does it but I also need to know how to do this as well. Not many videos out that I have found with the quilting frame like what I have. This is great!! Now to go search & see if you have any quilting videos that will help me. 😊 I made myself a plexi board so I can sketch on. Any pointers for any of this? Thanks in advance.

I use Quilters Preview Paper to sketch designs on. Your board should work fine. I don't float my tops, it's just a personal preference.

Very cool technique, thanks! Adam when you pin the backing to the superleader burrito-style, do you match the centers of the backing and leader?
@adamsewfun.
@adamsewfun. 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t match my centers anymore. I toss my backing on and load where it lands. I tell newer long arm quilters to match the centers but once you are comfortable with the loading process and understand how everything works, you really can load anywhere you want.

I'm a longarm newbie and loaded my quilt using your burrito method. Had to reattach my backwards leaders and need to get a super leader for top bar. Does it matter if you pin all pins in one direction? Have neuropathy and that's easier on my fingers

You can only load something the same width as your leaders. You might be able to do it but I don’t know how you would.

I have a Babylock Jewel and I have the two bars in the front, one bar down in the middle on the bottom and one bar in the back. The markings on the table have the backing on the top bar, the top on the bottom bar with the batting going onto the bottom lower bar. Watching the video, when I loaded the backing on the top bar, the top on the bottom bar, there was no way for me to get the batting in onto the bottom bar because the quilt backing blocks the batting from going down. Nor am I able to stuff it between the two rails like you did so it can just sit between the two rails. Should I reverse how I've put the backing and top and see if I can tuck the batting in-between the two rails leaving the lower middle bar empty? Also my panels aren't level. They're tilting down 45 degrees. Are the ratchet poles able to be leveled? If so, how? The instructions that came with the machine aren't clear and I don't have the cd that came with the machine when I bought it.

You have a different frame than I have, so you would have to load according to what your manufacturer recommends. I believe your frame would be more like the Handi Quilter Clear View style, where the top of loaded onto the correct bar, cascades over the front. I have a video loading the burrito method in clear view, that one might work for you. The other questions about your frame I cannot answer because I’m just not familiar enough with the other frames out there.

@@adamsewfun. I basically followed your burrito method ignoring the batting rail underneath and managed to get the quilt loaded. Then, of course, my needle broke! Now on wait for needles being shipped.

Adam. Does it matter if you load your back fabric with a seam vertical or horizontal?
@adamsewfun.
@adamsewfun. 2 жыл бұрын
It’s easier to quilt when the seam is horizontal but sometimes you don’t have an option. Just make sure your backing is not too loose and use the side clamps if you have a vertical seam.

@adamsewfun.
@adamsewfun. 3 жыл бұрын
Just a matter of choice. I don’t use zippers because I like pins and snappers. I know people who LOVE zippers but everyone has their way that they feel works best for them. I won’t make a video with zippers because I don’t have them to load with.
