At train Mountain, there are several ways to haul ballast. By far, the most fun method is to do it by train. After all, what model railroaders really want to do is "play trains." Thanks to Bert Newberry, who designed and built the loading hopper and the ballast cars, we have the equipment to haul ballast while playing trains.
Each ballast car, when fully loaded, weighs approximately one ton and all are equipped with air brakes.
The next video in this series will show the ballast train backing up to where the new track construction has progressed, and then the spreading of the load of ballast.
This new track will be over a mile long and go to the home of Bill Dobbs, a Train Mountain member whose property adjoins Train Mountain. Bill says," Anyone that wants to volunteer can come and help finish this track."

I find it so satisfying when you get to use your model trains to hual actual freight, instead of just pulling railcars around. Those hoppers look so cool! I noticed that they are labeled "Quarry Mountain Rock". Personally, I would have labeled them "Train Mountain Maintenance Of Way", or TMMOW.

@@tonyordaziii7250 There are a few factors involved in determining how much ballast you will need. You will need to know the length of track you intend to ballast, as well as how wide and how deep. You will also need to specify the the material you want to use. There are a lot of opinions about what works best. Do you need to meet any standards, e.g., city, county, or state forestry? The Train Mountain standards were developed to comply with forestry requirements to ensure we could still operate during fire season. When you get it all together, then do the math to determine cubic yards and call your local rock plant for a quote. If you do FB, then find Dennis Ward's FB page and ask him for more details. He is the engineer that was hauling the ballast in the video. FYI, the second part of this series, that shows the ballast being spread, will go live today.

I do not know this railroad. Where is it located? What gauge? How is it powered? Amazing how much can be hauled by rail. Even small rail.

Train Mountain (at lat. 42.55741 lon. -121.88707) is half way between Klamath Falls, Oregon and Crater Lake National Park. The small City of Chiloquin, Oregon, is just to the east of Train Mountain. Train Mountain is a Train Park that is owned a 501c3 non-profit organization. It sits on 2200 acres or about 3.5 square miles with 37 actual miles of track. There are several scale model towns along the track. The track is 7.5 inch. which is 1/8 scale compared to full size US railroads.

Thank you. Did not know you were there when we visited Baker City to see the eclipse in 2017. We did ride on the Sumter Valley RR.

@@gregwarner3753 TM is several hours drive south west from Sumpter, and the traffic around here was total gridlock during the eclipse event. You would have a lot more enjoyable trip if you come to see this area without that type of traffic mess.

The traffic was not that bad as we watched the eclipse from Oregon Trail Interpetive Center. Overall that trip was quite memorable. We do intend to return to the region and will explore the Crater Lake area. So long as our health holds up we plan on one 5 to 6 week and one three week trip every summer. These will be done in our 2010 C-6 Vette. It is a great paved road touring car. We rent appropriate specialty cars for dirt or rough roads. Due to medical reasons this Summer will be in the North East or, if the Covid restrictions are eased, Maritime Canada. Thank you for your response.

@@gregwarner3753 You probably were not affected by the north-south traffic of people from California. US 97 was totally stopped here for over 8 hours - one big parking lot. Do try to get out to this area when you get a chance, as there is a lot to see.
