I hope everyone is doing well! This one is a little bit on the shorter side but I wanted to share a quick tutorial on loading 35mm and 120mm film on a Paterson Tank spool as this was probably one of my most asked questions in terms of developing film! I created some mock films from negatives I've developed previously to mimic what the film looks like after it has been shot through with a camera. I hope you guys enjoy this video and let me know if you have any questions! I'd be happy to answer them!
OH! Make sure to load your film in a changing bag! This was just showing how you would load film in the changing bag! :)

If a film picker is used, you can start the process in the light by pulling out an equal amount of film from the canister as was used when loading the film into the camera. This amount was already exposed during the camera loading process. Once started the reel, turn the lights off and finish the process.

Also look for AP or Kaiser film reels, which are much easier to use than the Paterson ones, they have a much bigger loading slot (for want of a better term), they have made my life so much easier

I haven't seen a video yet on UNLOADING the film (once developed) from the cylinder. I'm sure there's got to be a way to do it without damaging the film. Anyone?

Thanks for the video! What about unloading? Do you simply reverse the process? For 35mm, can I open up the spool to the 120 size so it can release it? Thanks!

1. Wet film will not back out of this plastic reel. Just grab the end of the film roll and pull it out, unwinding as you go. 2. You can expand the reel to drop the 35mm roll out of the spool, however routinely doing this will wear on the catches which set the reel at its 35mm or 120 positions. Paterson reels are junky enough when well cared for, so I wouldn't beat on them any more than necessary.

The tape back in the tank can mess with your chemistry, better to cut it off.

I use the tape as an additional aid to getting the film on the counfounded reel in total darkness. The folded back tape gives the film just that little bit of extra rigidity. It won't mess with the chemsitry.

I so f**ing hate it. In light it is so easy but in dark it is the most frustrating thing I have ever tried to do.

Agree...wuaaaay harder in the cave like conditions of a darkened darkroom.

Significant error shown regarding loading of 35mm film onto the reel. You first cut the beginning "tongue" off the end of the film roll so that you start with a squared off end when you first thread the film onto the reel. Otherwise, that tongue is going to keep popping out of its track and causing the film to stop loading. Basic mistake!

120 is a format, not a size. 120mm is not the correct terminology, as the film is roughly 60mm/6cm wide. Its just called 120. Cameras that shoot 120 format film, can have frame sizes, 6x4.5 cm, 6x6, 6x7, 6x8, 6x9, 6x12, typically depending on the camera.
