This is an excellent review. Most reviews don't concentrate so much on how long it takes to break in shoes/boots. I have a pair of Loake Pimlico's in calf also from their 1880 range. I only wear them occasionally and it took somewhere between 10 to 15 wears to break them in sufficiently to stop hurting. During that time I wore plasters around the main pain points to prevent further blisters. They are now superbly comfortable and my favourite boots.

I bought a pair of Burfords with the Dainite sole in Tan and wore them indoors for two days before wearing them to work, and they are super comfy. No break-in at all.

Lovely looking boot, love the brogue detail and the colour. I had a pair of boots (not loake) exactly this style way back in the early 80's, and they were referred to then as officers boots, they came in this tan colour and oxblood. This is such a classic boot, and I'm seriously wanting these in this colour.

Thank you so much for this review. I knew they were gonna be a bit of a tough break in, which put me off at first, but you still sold me. I went for the Danite sole though, as I prefer the rubber / pavement contact the than leather / pavement contact of standard welted shoes. Having worked in the City of London, where it's York Stone mostly, leather soles are like wearing roller skates, so it's off to get some plasters and then enjoy these beautiful country coots. Thank you again.

It's an absolute must to work in a couple of layers of shoe cream before wear imo, and especially into the ankle where they don't move and wear in as easy. I also put them on a proper cobbler's shoe stretcher afterwards to force some in before wear. Really made breaking them in easier.

Hi Andy, very helpful video, bit the bullet and went for a pair of the Loake bedale boots with victory soles in Burgundy, quality of these is simply top drawer, good socks make a diffence with good boots, trying them on for size when buying in an afternoon is a good idea as your feet swell through the course of the day, leading to a more pleasing fit. Looking forward to seeing pt2, I like HJ commando 3000 socks for in my Loakes and never seem to get any problems, all the best of British John.

Got a pair of burford danites in burgundy, gorgeous hard wearing boot and even more so with a danite sole. Break in process was a tough one but very worth it. I also have to say, since i wore them daily, the ankle pain is a killer, was stuffing a soft material down there at one point to allow myself to walk in them.

Appreciate the time you put in with your review but there were so many innacuracies. Firstly, Loake shoes or boots should never be uncomfortable to the extent of feeling painful upon breaking in. I suspect you ordered these rather than going into a shop and getting proper advice as they would have told you that your feet are a G fitting and you bought the Burfords which are a standard F fitting. You bought the wrong boots. I have similar feet to yours and purchased the similar Loake Bedale boot in a wider G fiitting made on the Pennine last. They were comfortable from day one and still are 6 years later. You should never need to stretch any shoe or boot you purchase unless of course you buy incorrectly. Incidenrally the device you put into your Burford with the socks lol were shoe trees, not shoe stetchers and will never stretch your boots. Shoe trees will only keep your shoes in shape as they dry out, especially cedar wood aromatic ones. Please buy the Bedales next, you will love them far more than the Burfords.

I sooo want a pair of these. In my opinion, a pair of shoes should not hurt or cause blisters like this even straight out of the box. Perhaps the Last that these are manufactured on (the 204, F width, I think) don't suit your foot shape. You could try a boot that is made on The Penine Last, which is a little more generous and is a G width, maybe? I have a pair of The Glendale, which is manufactured on this Last. I never wear a pair of shoes straight out of the box. I put them on each evening for a week when relaxing at home, watch TV etc without walking around too much. I just let the shoes become accustomed to my feet. I recently bought a pair of Loake Deangate Chukka boots. Like yourself here, they were a bit stiff. During my week at home with them I applied Saphir Rejuvenate cream around the top cuff, which softened them up a bit. After a week of this and a nice polish for the first outing, they were nice and comfy. Just a minimum amount of pressure on the lower leg. Also while getting used to boots, you can choose to not tie up to the top eyelet. Tieing up one hole down from the top allows the top of the cuff to flex more as you walk about in the early days.

I am amazed that they make boots with a smooth sole. One of the main functions of boots is to be rugged, to be worn in any enviroment. Boots must have a serrated sole to be slip proof and provide better grip. Smooth sole boots are a contradiction in terms. My two cents.

M&S are selling a very nice pair of goodyear welter tan boots on their website for £139. Closer to the Loake Bedale than the Burford. Not as nice as Loake 1880s obviously (upper is corrected grain leather) but great value for the price.

get a pair of Cheaney Tweeds, £100 more but the Calf Leather they use is of a far superior grade than the hides Loakes use and they wear like slippers from day one...They are beautiful boots too!

The Tweed is nice but it’s a different style - more comparable with the Loake Bedale. This is more of a town boot - basically a boot version of the Chester brogue. I really like the the 024 last - one of Loake’s most distinctive.

If you wear your shoes, especially boots, indoors for 2 hours at a time indoors. The break in will be much easier. Not polishing the boots before going out for a party probably wouldn't be something I would do. But I tend to baby my shoes. Great video otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Please watch vids on how to break in boots before you buy these kind of quality boots. Also (in my opinion) the rubber sole is a much better, practical option. Remember to condition them (not cheap polish) and they last decades.

Can anyone advise whether to go for this in the leather sole, or for the one with dainite sole. I ask because I intend to buy a pair and want them to last absolutely for the longest time possible without needing an early re-sole. I live in a very humid, often rainy and very warm environment. I wonder if harsh city concrete and frequent thunderstorms would not be sensible for leather sole. But dainite does not seem quite as "true" or "classic" as the leather one. Any comments from experience?

Ive had a pair of these boots for 2 year! My Mrs bought me them for Christmas, Ive only been able to wear them half a dozen times as they really hurt my feet. But I shall persevere as I love them and of the cost!. Think I am just going to have to bit the bullet and break both the boots and the pain barrier! Any tips ?

I have a pair of Burford II's, which presumably are very similar to these (mine are branded as Peal & Co., sold by Brooks Brothers). I wore them all day walking the other day, and by the end of the day, my smallest toes were killing me-the shape of the last where it tapers down jams them as the leather bends when I walk. My question is: Power through (hair dryer trick and shoe stretching perhaps?) and hope the leather will loosen enough to mold to my toes OR sell them and hope to come across a half size up? I got the normal size that I always buy in every shoe, and these don't feel like a half size too small in any other respect (plus Brooks has sold out of this shoe after it went on steep discount, so the likelihood of me finding a pair is slim to nil), so I'm torn on what to do. Any input? Great video, btw, want to see part 2.

In the end, i did the hairdryer trick for 2 - 3 days and worked a treat. In terms of your crunched up toes, mine was the same. I used some really strong trees and put like a rubber substance to just stretch the little bit i needed for little right toe, if that makes sense. The boots are super comfy now and glad i put the time in. Saying that one of customers brought a pair of Bedales and has worn them straight out of the box with not wearing in at all

Hi. Dj wise, i play in peterborough, Soul , 2 tone, and rock n roll, my son plays in a rock n roll band, and i warm up for him. Does the trick as it gets people dancing before they come on. The boots I wore for a good year, i only stopped wearing them becuase i wear desert boots, at modshoes day to day. Great boots. For days to day i would proporly get a rubber soled pair. If i had leather for going boots they would last years

Hi, I have a question about the fit of leather boots. I have a new pair of Barker Harrisons that fit quite tight, I can't wiggle my toes at all. They don't hurt, just uncomfortable because my foot is rather restricted. Assuming I wear them everyday, will the leather soften enough and become more comfortable?
@BunnyVMusic
@BunnyVMusic 6 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, this is normal. However, a shoe tree would certainly relieve the restriction there in the toebox.

easy Way to break any natural leather down is to draw a hot bath and we're your boots in the bath, finish the bath and then keep them on your feet until they dry out when they are dry best part of a day. heat the boot gently with a hair dryer to open the grain and the cover the boot with leader balm it will absorb into the boot quickly,repeat the heat and leader balm until the leather grain is full then buff to the desired finish. one set of boots moulded to your foot and weather proof and supple. repeat leader balm monthly and thease boots will last for years.

Mod Shoes Yeah, everyone’s feet are different. I have a pair of Suede loafers that I always think I have broken in and then when I wear them all day I get rubbing on my right heel. Unfortunately when you’re size 11+ half sizes aren’t always available. I own a pair of the version of the Burford that Loake make for Herring and the leather is much harder and thicker than you will find in a pair of their Oxfords. I was actually surprised by the initial tightness of the 24 last. It’s certainly not a narrow Last but it isn’t as roomy as I thought it might be. It is quite elongated though so those with narrower feet should approach with caution.
