Charlie, I drool everytime you show that Robotron. That is my fav game of all time. Is it tough to keep those games running?

Thanks! It's funny you say that, as the sound PCB in my Robotron recently stopped working! 😅 To me, though, working on these games is at least half the fun!

Thanks! I’d say Q*bert is probably the highest priority project in my restoration queue. I think I’ve got all the parts I need on hand as of now, and the biggest hurdle to get over will be figuring out what’s wrong with the sound PCB. Should be fun!

I don't understand the thrill of owning one of these oversized cabinets with one game inside. Give me a multicade over any one of these things any day.

If you’ve got the space and means, I think there’s something to be said about owning the real McCoy: an original cabinet with the proper controls, full-size CRT, authentic game hardware, correct artwork, etc. Even the best forms of emulation are usually a bit off, too. Plus, I personally get a ton of satisfaction from restoring these machines to their original glory, which can’t be replicated any other way.

My Williams cabinet has plastic marquee brackets also... My version has the silver coin door too.

Always sad to see a public arcade shut down, but I think there were just consolidating to a smaller location so they’re not completely out of business. I just looked at their FB place though, and they may have ultimately kept this location open?

The coin door on my Black Knight pinball looks identical to that Defender unit. Williams probably bought them by the truck load for their games in the early 80s

@@overtimearcade Ooh... Excited. I know you're more of a purist collector, but they have amazing reproduction cards AND ones for NES games never ported to the PS-10. I have Tengen Tetris on there for example. PS-10 is, in my opinion, the best way to play Dr. Mario as well. I'd consider some of those as Joe even ads top screen instructions with art just like the original games. :)

Defender is one of the greats! Can't wait to see how it ends up. I'm looking at the initial shot of the Joust and Robotron cabs and they look fantastic. Williams definitely knew how to design These things.

Yeah, I mean, it’s working fine for now as-is, but I wouldn’t want to leave it like that long term. I’ll just replace it when I pull the chassis out for a cap kit, etc. I’m also thinking about Frankenstein-ing together a 4600 monitor from parts I have on hand, potentially using a tube that already has Defender burn…

Man The Joust game brings back lots memories with a best friend back in early 80's And nice shirt Im In Texas but been to Bar Harbor!

Thanks! The Joust restoration I completed earlier this year was a blast, and I’m hoping this Defender is just as much fun to restore, too! Texas and Bar Harbor are two of my favorite places to visit!

Actually, the 60-in-1 board I was using for testing is designed for vertically-oriented monitors while Defender has a horizontal monitor, so it looks sideways in this cabinet.

I know, right? Sadly, I only had room in my truck for one more cabinet, and I don’t think they were selling off everything anyway. But I did have that scene of Pee-Wee Herman at the pet store on fire stuck in my head!

Restore the whole cabinet in one video? This was only part 1 of the project. It usually takes me a few months to complete a restoration like this, (although I usually am working on several at once), especially conversions like this where I have to repair the cabinet itself, recover/replace the original artwork, rebuild the electronics, etc. Plus I do this as a hobby (i.e., it’s not my full-time job), so I only get a couple of hours a day at best to work on this stuff. We’ll get there though!
