► What is local SEO?
Local SEO refers to the process of ‘optimizing’ your online presence to attract more business from relevant local searches.
► How does local SEO work?
Local SEO helps businesses promote their products and services to local prospects and customers. To gather information for local search, search engines rely on signals such as local content, social profile pages, links, and citations to provide the most relevant local results to the user.
► How To Rank in Google Local 3-Packs
1. On-page optimization
2. Optimize your Google My Business
3. Claim other Social Media Profiles
4. Confirm NAP consistency
5. Get more reviews for your business
6. Create local content focused on local keywords
► Local keyword research isn’t overly complicated.
Let’s say that you’re attempting to sell your service of website design in Toronto - how do you think people will search for your services?
They’ll probably go to Google and type something like:
1. “Website developer in Toronto”
2. “Best web developer in Toronto”
3. “Affordable website designer in Toronto”
4. “Who is the best website design company in Toronto”
► How do I create a local keyword list? Let’s walk through my steps:
1. I use my brain aka dome
2. Google auto complete
3. Reverse Engineer my Competitors
4. Keyword Magic Tool
► Are you doing local SEO for a business based in a small town?
So here’s a quick trick… You do not need to live in the city you are targeting and can focus on multiple locations at once.
1. Swap out your location modifier (for example) “Burlington” for a larger, nearby city “Toronto”
2. Want to see how your competitors are doing it? Site://
3. Show my examples: North Pole SEO, NYC SEO, etc…
► Multiple locations and targeting many locations?
No problem at all!
1. Each physical location should have their own GMB, Social Media Accounts, Submit to local directories.
2. No physical location? You simply want to take over the world. Create content about those locations. My Top 10 Local SEO strategies:
1. Claiming and optimizing profiles on Google My Business, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter…
2. Manually submitting your website to Local Directories
3. Joining local Business Associations and Groups
4. Getting Reviews on local review sites like Google and Yelp
5. Targeting relevant and local keywords
6. Creating location-specific website copy, website pages, H1, H2 and URL’s
7. Adding name, address, and phone number (NAP) information on your site, social media and local directories
8. Embedding a Map with your location on your website
9. Getting Backlinks from reputable, local websites
10. Including External links to reputable, local websites and businesses

Hi Chris, really enjoying your content, spitting out real gems of info! I have a quick question regarding website copy for each location. If I were to create pages for lets say 50 different locations, how diverse does the website copy need to be? Is it enough to just change the location in the copy, header tags etc, or would I need to essentially write fresh content for 50 pages? Cheers, and keep up the great work!

Hey Chris, thanks for the high quality video. I do have some specific questions: how do you manage your main keyword page vs keyword + city ? If someone clics on you menu -> services -> web design, do you recommend to optimise this "main keyword page" for a location (the one you are established in) or to leave it general ? If you choose not to optimise it, is it relevant to make a page that targets your own city ? I hope I've managed to express myself clearly, otherwise let me know. Thanks sir.

@ANerdsWorld
@ANerdsWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions Adnan, I'll answer them one-by-one: Q: how do you manage your main keyword page vs keyword + city ? A: I have ALL my keywords (local + global) in one folder on my SEMrush account so I can monitor stats all at one time, in one place. Now, I'm not sure what you mean by "manage" but... once I create a landing page (based on a city + keyword) I watch to see how Google reacts. If the reaction is good (but not great) I will revisit the page and add more content + get backlinks + social citations to that page. If the city + keyword jumps to the number 1,2,3 position on Google I just leave the page alone and watch the stats. Q: If someone clicks on you menu -> services -> web design, do you recommend to optimise this "main keyword page" for a location (the one you are established in) or to leave it general ? A: Yes, I think that the far majority of watchers should solely focus on one location for their local based business, especially if you're new to SEO. I do focus on the location "Toronto" on all of my main service pages. Q: If you choose not to optimise it, is it relevant to make a page that targets your own city ? A: The best route to higher local ranking is to optimize your main website pages with the city that you are targeting. That being said, if for some crazy reason you don't want to do that then yes create a new city + keyword landing page would be the second best option. I hope that helps sir, Chris A. Hughes

@@ANerdsWorld Thank you sir for your high quality answer. I really appreciate it ! To give a little context: My target area is Swiss French part (approx 3 million people). The competition on google is pretty average for the keyword "website design". I am redesign my website and just finished co-writing (with a writer) a general page for this keyword (1200 words). Knowing that the region is "not that big" do you think that I should keep the content the same (general) or adapt it to my city Fribourg (with agglo. 350k peopole) ? I do think that if I optimise this page for my city, I do have big chances to rank top 3 too.. Thank you very much for your high quality advices sir !

Great question! If your not targeting local clients/buyers you don't have to worry about Local SEO. That being said, SEO is SEO and the steps remain almost exactly the same. Instead of looking for local keywords, you simply want keywords. Instead of seeking local backlinks, you now need to look for any high DA backlinks. Hope that helps, Chris

Would you build a separate landing page for each Keyword?
@ANerdsWorld
@ANerdsWorld 3 жыл бұрын
The answer depends on a few factors: 1. Are you already ranking for a location keyword. If so are you happy with the page currently ranking. 2. Content is King! But you need to go in with a strategy. I wouldn't create 3 new landing pages for keywords like toronto web design, toronto website design, toronto web design company at the same time. All 3 of those keywords are too similar and could easily all fit on one website page. 3. You should start ranking in 1 city and building your website authority before you simply start mass producing landing pages. Quality over quantity in the begin, then once you start ranking I would recommend you crank out landing page after landing page. Hope that helps! Chris

Can't you get a manual penalty since google has said doorway pages (city pages) are against their guidelines and that you shouldn't build them? They've said it multiple times.

As they say the proof is in the pudding. My landing pages / doorway pages rank #1 on Google for all major keywords and have for many years. I'll keep profiting while others avoid them. I think if the statement were true Google would be smart enough to see that the only way to find my page is a Google search for that exact keyword. I share exact receipe for success with my audience. Everything I say, I do myself on my own site. Those are my thoughts JM. I hope you have a great evening. Chris

I am building a LARGE site targeting the home services market. Initially I will be focusing on building national pages targeting 1,000+ project categories. Each project category will have 100+ articles about different projects a homeowner might be searching for that would fit into the type of work done by a specific type of home service provider. This part of the website will be primarily focused on just attracting homeowners searching for information on home maintenance, repair, or remodeling projects. This stage of the website will focus on generating revenue from ad networks and affiliate links for tools and materials curated for the type of maintenance, repair or remodeling project discussed in the article. That part of the project is pretty straightforward (just massive in scope)... I will be building content to generate NATIONAL traffic. But I need advice on how to move forward on the second part of the project... generating leads for LOCAL home service providers and contractors in local markets all over the country. In your video you talk about making content pages for a website that target local submarkets for a SINGLE home service supplier or contractor. But I need to do that for 1,500 markets ... and many times that number of submarkets. How many times can I rewrite one of my national articles to target all of these THOUSANDS of local markets? Is there a way I can just take the national article and add in "in _____" market or similar phrases without completely rewriting the entire article? Can I use the canonical meta tag to point all these articles back to the national article so that Google understands that these local articles are not duplicate content and get BOTH the local and national juice out of each of the localized articles? I really hope you can give me some advice on how to move forward. Also, I would like to know if you would like to help me with this project... putting together a step by step procedure for choosing national articles, generating the localized articles and interlinking the articles into content clusters/silos ... and then helping me put together the staff to roll out this project.
@ANerdsWorld
@ANerdsWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Good morning, My first advice is to not overly strategies (in the beginning). Meaning, you want to start working on this game plan, then sit back a little to see the results and what's working well for you. Let me answer your questions one-by-one: Q: That part of the project is pretty straightforward (just massive in scope)... I will be building content to generate NATIONAL traffic. But I need advice on how to move forward on the second part of the project... generating leads for LOCAL home service providers and contractors in local markets all over the country. Q: How many times can I rewrite one of my national articles to target all of these THOUSANDS of local markets? Is there a way I can just take the national article and add in "in _____" market or similar phrases without completely rewriting the entire article? Can I use the canonical meta tag to point all these articles back to the national article so that Google understands that these local articles are not duplicate content and get BOTH the local and national juice out of each of the localized articles? A: The right answer would be to say that you shouldn't be reusing your content on multiple pages. You may get hurt in the future (from drops on Google). That being said, I often re-use my content by simply changing a few words and I use that content on many different landing pages. I've never been hurt or seen any drops on Google. Remember I cannot predict the future, so this may change in coming years. If you would like to hire me for direction and assistance simply send an email to nerd@anerdsworld.com with more info and I can provide a price quote. I hope that helps! Chris A. Hughes

@@ANerdsWorld thanks for the feedback ... I have to admit that I definitely suffer from analysis paralysis. I guess that comes from too many times launching businesses without having a FULL plan and getting burned... and having a real love of learning ... and being able to easily learn ... pretty much ANY technology that I need to take on projects. All that yields to me getting too easily distracted by new technology and figuring out how to use it. I did see that you are using almost 100% duplicate content with just the name of the town changed. That is really encouraging... but I do worry about what Google might do in the future. That is why I asked about canonical meta data and whwtere that can be a way to tell Googke the local pages are duplicates of the nonlocalized original page and should be used by Google only to identify local markets where we work. I will send you an email so we can talk about how we could work together. I am very serious about launching this website business ... but as big as this project is it really is just the foundation for a network of 1,500 showrooms with 60,000+ square feet of displays for local home services providers surrounding 100+ fully setup kitchens and baths displaying the cabinetry we will be manufacturing overseas and accessories from the other 200+ home service providers working out of each showroom (and buying leads from the website) I do need to get past my block on getting started though. I just turned 69 yesterday and I have been fighting TWO Stage IV cancers (prostate and melanoma) for the 5 years.
