Thanks for watching this local guide to visiting Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. This is the ancestral home of the Ute and Arapaho people. In fact, the Ute Trail in Rocky Mountian National Park is a traditional migratory path that the Ute people would take every year. This trail predates settlers and has been used for centuries!
Fox in the Forest aims to empower you to get outside. Covering incredible outdoor locations in Colorado, the American Southwest, and Lake Tahoe, I want you to travel like a local, not a tourist.
Rocky Mountain National Park is a must-see if you’re visiting Colorado. Just remember that from May through September you’ll need a timed entry permit during certain hours of the day (info below).
As a local and an alpine climber, I visit RMNP multiple times a year. I’ve been coming to Rocky Mountain National Park for over 15 years and have a wealth of information to share so you can plan the perfect visit to the park. There’s the way tourists see the park and the way long-time visitors experience the park.
With proper planning and a little know-how, you can enjoy solitude at some of the top spots in the park. You may even discover a few secret gems along the way.
These notes are LOADED with resources to help you plan your visit to Rocky Mountain National Park like a local, not a tourist. So check them out below!
As always, visit wild spaces responsibly! Always pack out your trash including water bottles, fruit peels, toilet paper, and anything else you bring with you. Leave only footprints.
Follow all closures, fire bans, drone regulations (no drones in Rocky Mountain National Park), and dog rules (dogs are prohibited on unpaved trails in Rocky Mountain National Park).

✨ About the Photos and Video:
Transparency is important to me when it comes to photography. There is Instagram and there is reality. And you should be inspired by BOTH.
I intentionally use photos and videos that have been edited for color and lighting, and ones that haven’t.
All the photos and videos you see of Rocky Mountain National Park were taken by me. I rarely edit other people out of photos (and I would make a note here if I did!).

The only Mountain Goats in RMNP are the occasional one that strays in from elsewhere and these are then usually relocated.

Not surprising since they are a non-native species to Colorado and carry a lot of diseases, but I have seen them here early in the mornings.

We'll be there September 23-27 and in the park on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Will the parking on Bear Lake Road still be that crazy on those dates?

This is a tough time of year because fall colors could easily be in full swing. When fall colors are full-out people FLOCK to the park. BUT, given that the days are shorter and you're visiting during the week, you can likely push your start time to be a little bit later (my gut is telling me 6:30-8 am for Bear Lake, but I can't make any promises on the later end of that timeframe). Glacier Gorge Trailhead just doesn't have that many spots, so I'd arrive earlier there if you want to park there. 3 am is unnecessary that time of year - it's that early because of the rock climbers and their season is mostly wrapped up by late September, but 6 am wouldn't be out of the question. I know that's not exact, but I hope that's at least a little helpful for planning. Wednesday will certainly be the quietest day so I would plan to do the most crowded thing on your itinerary that day!

I’m going next week, we have a Bear Lake timed entry for the 6:00-8:00am time slot. Was planning to arrive at 5:30am, will I have luck getting parking at park and ride? Understanding it varies…and what do people do when parking is full, just drive in circles until you hope a spot opens? TIA!!

Rangers patrol the Beark Lake lot and really discourage driving in circles (they make you exit and come back, which is a bit of a pain). If your aim is to get to the park n ride, I think you should be okay at that time, but I'm usually arriving early enough to not need the park n ride. You will not be allowed in at 5:30, you'll only be allowed in during your time slot. They have a checkpoint at the start of the road. Hope that helps!

@@megintheforestoutdoors thank you, from what I have read or seen the lines can be up to an hour long so I thought I would be safe showing up 1/2 before my actual timed entry window of time and to get parking. Thanks for the tips!

@@JRLoy-gc2xk Oh ok! I thought you were referring to entering bear lake at that time. Doesn't hurt to show up a little early. Enjoy!
