Really, it’s the union of the table + preserve + outhouses that make it. Trails are always a bonus!

What can I say but WOW ! I grew up in Lenawee county, my Dad & Mom took us boys (all 7 of us) on many trips all over Mi. Before & after “The” bridge was finished . I’m a “two lane junkie” and retired truck driver , love to know about the old roads that gave way to the Interstates . Now that I know where this picnic table is , I will go by and pay homage to the first one of my 3 million mile career. I reside in Tx now and know of many roadside tables and CCC built rest areas in this fine State. But none compare to a first in my home State. Thank You for a great and to me, thrilling story. Well done on the research for the U.P. also. Lord willing I’ll be looking into that rest area as well

Hey, I like that picnic wooden cabinet you have! My dad also had one he built and took with him. It had little drawers he made out of old wooden cheese boxes. He kept salt, pepper, matches, and cooking and eating utensils in it.

Awesome little cook kit ya got there. It is like a little version of what we had in my boy scout troop. So cool!. In 2020, when we all thought the virus would get us, my wife and i used one of the road side tables to eat a lunch we had packed for a long drive. It was kinda nice enjoying nature instead of quickly shoveling down whatever hot slop the fast food joints had for us. Maybe we should do that more.

If you still happen to be in the area, there is a neat, back wood site to see, just east and to the south of Portland, MI. It's the grave site of Chief Okemos. It is near my home town of Eagle. Hope you and the Mrs had a great trip and have a good week.

Michigan always was ahead of the game in regards to their roadside rest areas. He and grandma frequently told me about the “CCC” boys building a lot of things for them and state Forrest campgrounds. There was one such campground on the upper Muskegon river at what was know as the canoe camps or the high banks canoe camps. I think there were 3 of them between Reedsburg and Leota.

@@RestlessViking Thank you! Looking forward to it. I love how you cover the off-the-beaten path items. I currently live in Southwest Michigan and there's some interesting stories down here if you ever get this way. For example, Fort St. Joseph in Niles was as important as the forts at Mackinac if not more so but after it was abandoned the site was forgotten and lost. It was only recently rediscovered and is being excavated. This was also the only fort in Michigan to be conquered by the Spanish, yes, you heard that right. That's another one you need to look into because there's quite a story about that one.
