Welcome back fellow aircraft builders and aviation enthusiasts! This video replaces my old video on "Accounting for Materials Thickness." Zenith generally does not locate bend lines for you, because all manufacturing methods have an effect on bend line placement. In this video, I detail how to account for material thickness and bend line placement in the blueprints, while accommodating your own production methods.
Thanks for watching, and check out my blog at gregsplane.blogspot.com to follow my progress!

I have been very unimpressed with Zeniths plans as I have progressed through my 650 build. Lots errors, ambiguites, lack of datums, etc. One thing I have found useful in my construction is not worry so much about flange dimensions as the web dimensions. If the lflange comes out a little long I can trim it if necessary. If the web is off, I have to remake the part.

I imagine the 650 plans are pretty similar to the 750 plans, judging by what I saw when I had my 601XL plans. When I first started the project, I thought there were all sorts of errors and such. As I gained more experience interpreting the plans, I realized that some of it was just me. I found some "missing" information elsewhere in the plans, such in assembly drawings. The 701 plans, which I've examined, are MUCH more "fleshed out" for a scratch builder. Although the 750 plans do still have some errors and missing info, there weren't as many as I'd initially presumed. Some things are also left ambiguous (intentionally, I suspect) because the method of fabrication affects the finished dimensions. I don't blame you for being frustrated, though. I plan to address some of these issues with Zenith.

Where the hell were you last year?? do you know how long it took me to figure those darn bend lines...the number of parts I scrapped....lol When I see those bend line.....i always check, double check and triple check before bending and I do the same ...I take note of the bend directions that i used for reference. This video will be EXTREMELY important to all new scratch builders. Great job Gregg.

andre Levesque It took fabricating almost all the sheet metal parts to figure out what did and didn't need to be included in this video, especially as it replaces my older one. Honestly, I could probably do an entire series on blueprints reading. I spent a lot of time thinking about how I wanted to do this video, but couldn't quite put it together until now. Thanks for watching & the comments!

Just ordered my plans. My drive to pick up materials will be about 5 hours to Spokane from Montana where I live. Is there anyway you can give me a materials list as far as the Aluminum thickness and amount of sheets needed as well as the amount and size of 4130 tube? be super appreciated and would possibly save me a road trip. Thanks!

Thanks for watching! I don't have a materials list for the 4130 just yet (it depends on if I order the finishing kit or scratch-build all those components too). For the aluminum sheet, these are the minimums I came up with, and they only apply to an Edition 3 STOL CH 750: .016 - 5 sheets, .020 - 9 sheets, .025 - 3 sheets, .032 - 2 sheets, .040 - 1 sheet, .063 - 1/2 sheet (4x6), .090 2'x3', .125 - 2' x 2'. Also, you need some very small pieces of .1875, .250 and .500 (I recommend Amazon). If you're skilled enough to make no mistakes, these amounts should build the whole airplane if you can maximize sheet usage and minimize cut-off waste. It is very close on the .063" if you are going to do the seat pans. I suggest extra, but it's hard to know what thicknesses you'll need extra for until you start building. It's about $50-$60 to ship 3-4 full sheets of anything rolled, up to about .040. I've needed extra .016 for some re-skinning I did, and .025 (full sheet) and .032 (small quantity) so far for do-overs that I either needed or chose to do.

Greg's Zenith STOL CH750 that's super! Thanks for that! It will save me much time. Been watching your videos. There super helpful. Gonna be cutting everything out on a 4x8 CNC router table so I should have precise cuts for everything with little waste. I'll keep in touch and let u know how it goes. May see you at a fly in one day. Thanks again for the info!

You're welcome! Good luck with the build. You should be able to turn out some really nice parts with a CNC router table.
