Don't use the sighting devices to rotate the bezel. That's what the short vertical post is for. Using the sighting devices to rotate the ring is improper because it can loosen the sights. The vertical scale on the side of the firefinder, used with the horizontal azimuth scale, is used to determine minutes between degrees. To determine distance to a smoke, the metal tape between the sighting devices that cross the lookout position is usually marked in 1/2 inch increments, which equate to 1/2" = 1 mile.
