I have always fancied camping at Loch Doon ever since I started my wanders’ but on my recognisance trips I found it to be far too busy and a few too many party animals for my liking. I must be getting old.
In the end I decided to do a 2 nighter about 10 days before Easter in the hope of avoiding the rush. My luck held and I managed to get setup in a popular spot alongside a group of kids doing their Duke of Edinburgh’s. In the late afternoon a large number of cars with chaps in their late teens and early 20 year stopped by, but when seeing the large number of kids decided to camp further down the valley.
The first night was a bit cold and I had to get up and light the fire, the second night wasn’t so cold and I managed fine. I had a good drive round the area and got my dinner in a garden centre just outside Ayr.
Loch Doon is a great place to camp, but from Easter weekend it is mobbed until the end of October, so I will give it a miss until the backend of the year.
