LYRICS:
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
Chorus:
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
'Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond,
Where in purple hue, the hieland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.
Chorus
The wee birdies sing and the wildflowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping.
But the broken heart it kens, nae second spring again,
Though the waeful may cease frae their grieving.

think a lot of you aren't aware of the story of this song. The song is about 2 imprisoned soldiers in England, 1 was to be beheaded, the other was sent back to Scotland as a free man. This is why the song goes, "you take the high road and I'll take the low", the low road is what we call being dead sometimes. The high road is over the hills. Then the next line is "and I'll be in Scotland before you" meaning he's going to be in heaven/Scotland. Its about the battle of Culloden in the 1700s. We sing it at weddings, funerals and any chance we can at parties. It's to let the English and the rest of the world know that we will always be free as long as we have Scotland in our hearts.

I am a southerner from North Carolina in the United States. Like many southerners, I have much scottish blood via the Scots-Irish settlers that emigrated from Ireland in the 1700s, after previously coming from Lowland Scotland. We southerners will always feel a love for and special relationship with Scotland. The Celtic songs ring true in my heart. Much love and well wishes, y'all.

Thanks so much for the info! My little boy (and I, too) just loves this song, and this version especially. He was very glad to know the story (and sad, too, of course). I always knew one of the two was dead but did not know they were prisoners or their situation or that it related to such a famous (and devastating) battle.

Cool story: this song has been stuck in my head for something like 10 years. I couldn't remember any words, just the tune. I had no way of finding it and no one u hummed it for could place it. Then, Pandora accidentally made me a Celtic station I didn't ask for. THIS song started playing and I literally yelled when I realized that this is it. The song I thought I'd never hear. It's beautiful.

I'm not Scottish but English and yet I find the Irish and Scottish songs so beautiful and they touch the heart of all who allow theirs to be open and receiving. To you who have fun memories of grandmothers and others singing this song and who have Dementia or memory problems, Play the song for them. Just try it.

Anonymous Libertarian research shows that music is a wonderful medicine. There was an 87 year old man that couldn’t remember his wife, but they put him in front of a piano and he could play a song he learned when he was 8 years old. He didn’t remember the song until he was finished playing it. It has nothing to do with tissue in his case, it has to do with muscle memory. And that is why you can still do something you haven’t done in years. I played clarinet in 7th grade, and switched to choir up until now. I’m a senior in choir at my school, and I’m a soprano. I picked up a clarinet last week and was still able to play my solo for solo and ensemble from 6 years ago.

@@lizgawin899 I'm not a doctor, just worked with Alzheimer's and Dementia patients as a nurse. However, if you research those two diseases, both of them are progressive. In the case of your Aunt, she may have already been showing signs and symptoms of the disease and the stress of losing several family members in rapid succession could have caused her to decline very quickly. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

The song may be Scottish - but it's something we all know and understand deep within our hearts. Love is eternal. The reason this song is so wonderful is because the notes are happy, proud, and determined despite the context. It's a perfect mingling of happiness and sadness. It is comfort and loss.

My grandmother used to sing this song when I was a child, we walked somwhere together when travelling and i walked on a higher way than her. As a child I never understood the meaning (i am german), and till today I never heared or knew the full song. With this song I remember the great time together we had when I was younger and she, too. Thank you for the grat music you are making, I really enjoy listen to it. The harmony your songs have amaze me every time. Best wishes from Berlin, Germany

Loch Lomond is about two Scotsmen who were captured by the English. One was killed (they hadn't done anything wrong, other than being Scottish clansmen), and the other was sent to tell the Scottish about it. The high road is the road for the living. The low road is the road traveled by the dead.

+mafiacat88 Are you from Scotland? I am and it's honestly not all that bad sometimes. We do get nice weather on occasion. I think he did the best with what he could. I could well believe that the scenery in the video was from around Loch Lomond or maybe in the Trossachs in general. Also, Scotland is not grey. it may seem that way but in actuality it's very colourful just like any other place. All the different shades of green and brown on the hills and mountains. The purple of the heather. It is NOT grey. Oh and by the way, Loch Lomond looks very beautiful when the sun is setting so why shouldn't the sun be in one of the shots.

+Ace Pirosu FYI you only get chased by seagulls if you chase them and it only happens at the beach by the sea. In case you hadn't noticed Loch Lomond does not have a sea shore - mainly because it's a Loch. Also wind isn't something we've really been experiencing in extremes recently and even if we had been, there are places around Loch Lomond that can be fairly well sheltered from the wind. I get that you were probably trying to make a joke but that really doesn't come across for me. I try to never judge people or their countries by their stereotypes so I am quite upset when I find other people spreading them on the internet. Unfortunately this happens far too often. So please at least think about what you are saying before you post another comment.

+Kathryn Mackin As a lifelong Oregonian (as is Peter Hollens) and someone who has spend time in Scotland and has hiked the whole length of Loch Lomond on the West Highland Way - Oregon is very much like Scotland. Yes it rains a lot, but that leads to vibrant greens that fill the hills and makes you realize that you live in God's Country.

The original lyrics might as well have been lost I can't find a single video of them being sung, the original song was written in 1746 by Donald McDonald the lyrics are entirely different lol now THAT is a "forgotten" scottish melody due to the rewrites in the 1900's lol but hey, who's keeping track? ;) LOCH LOMOND Trad. Scottish Original Donald MacDonald lyrics 1746 O whither away my bonnie May Sae late and sae dark in the gloamin? The mist gathers gray oer moorland and brae. O whither sae far are ye roamin? O, yell tak the high road and Ill tak the low. Ill be in heaven afore ye. For me and my true love will never meet again By the bonnie, bonnie banks o Loch Lomond. I trusted my ain love last night in the broom, My Donald wha loves me sae dearly. For the morrow he will march for Edinburgh toon, Tae fecht for his king and Prince Charlie. O, weel may I weep for yestreen in my sleep. We lay bride and bridegroom together. But his touch and his breath were chilly as the death, And his heartsblood ran red in the heather. (chorus) As dauntless in battle as tender in love, Hed yield neer a foot tae the foeman. But never again frae the fields o the slain Tae his Moira will he come by Loch Lomond. The thistle may bloom, the king hae his ain, And fond lovers will meet in the gloamin. And me and my true love will yet meet again Far above the bonnie banks o Loch Lomond. (chorus)

Nintendo Medley (Super Mario World Overworld, the original Pokémon theme (from the game), and maybe some Zelda.) Dick Van Dyke Tribute for his 90th birthday (Put On a Happy Face, Chim-Chim-E-Ree, and a song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.) And a cover of John Cage's 4'33" for 4/1/2016. Thanks so much, Peter.
