When I was 7 years old I got caught shoplifting at a store. I was really scared. Security called my Father to come and get me. In the way home I was really relieved. I was happy and smiling thinking I got away with it. I felt I was smarter than everyone else. When I got home. My Father gave me the SPANKING of my Life. I never stole anything ever again. Smiles.

This just happened to me last night at Price Chopper in Endicott, NY so I had to research it. I paid for the items in my cart and as I'm leaving the store the cart stopped dead in it's tracks! A worker came over and helped me out and I was on my way. The worker said sometimes it just goes off for no reason.

I had a cart seize up on me as I was taking my cart out of the store. There was no sign at the store to explain what to do when it locked up either. I ended up transferring the contents of my cart to another cart that I found outside the store.

Retail worker here. Most of the theft that occurs at my store in particular is through self checkout. One attendant has to watch 6-8 kiosks, and when they're distracted, shoplifters can walk away without paying. Since they go through a self checkout gate, the wheels won't lock.

Also it's stupidly easy to just tilt the cart sideways if you don't load it up heavily. It's meant to slow shoplifters down, and it will, but it won't stop them.

@@micahnightwolf I work at a grocery store and always use self checkout during break. I can't even count the amount of times I've walked up to the checkout and all the scanned items are still on the screen and nothing has been payed for, with whoever it was nowhere in sight. This system is awful. My wife went to Meijer to shop but decided she would not purchase anything because our 2 year old was being fussy. On her way out, the cart locked up on her and someone came over to inspect the cart and asked her what she purchased. She felt humiliated and embarrassed bc she thought the were accusing her of stealing. I was furious and being that protective spouse, drove to Meijers to find out why they did that. It’s not a one size fits all system. Now my wife will not shop at Meijers because of being embarrassed

After I paid in self checkout and left the store, the wheels locked up and the store personnel came out and forcefully wrested my cart from me (I gave up not wanting anyone to get hurt). They demanded to check my receipt, which I had no obligation to show them. I told them to check the cameras. They wouldn't. They also didn't call the police. I had to. The police gave them a nice education about this and I left with my items. The store in this video obviously handles these malfunctions better than the shitshow store I was shopping at.

Ross & a few Dollar Tree's have also put theft deterrents on their carts. In some places you can't even take the cart outside of the store. Idk who's brilliant idea it was to make it so we can't get carts FULL of heavy bags out to our cars but they obviously didn't think it through. I use to fill my cart but now limit my purchases to what I can physically carry. It's kind of a lose lose for the customers & the store as well because they're not selling as much & we have to carry our things. Many times that means leaving some of our items behind & making 2 or 3 trips back & forth to the car carrying heavy items all the while worrying about someone stealing the things we had to leave behind & carry in seperate trips. I had this happen at a dollar tree in Seattle. I live with spinal pain & let's just say carrying a cart load of items & making numerous trips all the while worrying someone's going to steal the things you had to leave behind for a 2nd or 3rd trip is a real pain in the butt. I don't shop in either of those stores near as much as I use too for that reason. I feel bad for these shoppers, many might look fine but could also have unseen medical issues & are outside in the cold struggling with a darn shopping cart. If my cart was full of heavy items & the wheels locked up not allowing me to get to my car I'd be very frustrated. I know the carts are expensive & they get stolen even more now as the homeless population grows & I understand why a few might think this is a good idea but it's really not helping us or the store. Either the store's losing money buying expensive carts or they'll lose it in theft. I have a feeling it might be cheaper in the long run to let the homeless have the older carts then they won't have the need to steal or borrow them.

GateKeeper, which manufactures this solution called purcheck, also manufacture CartKeeper, which uses a wire ran around the perimeter to lock trolleys in the same way which purcheck does at the exit. Except you can't. If you paid for the product in the shopping cart, then it's your property. The cart is not. The cart is property of the store and if it locks up, that is not considered a detainment, nor is it an accusation of theft as you are free to remove the property from the locked cart and leave. If you are not physically detained/restrained (which most stores don't bother doing anyway - it's easier and safer to investigate and file a police report later), you don't have a case for anything.

Same issue with the carts, it is accusatory after a certain point. @@jules8262 No, not correct. Simple Google searches shows you're wrong. I've yet to find a single case of someone winning a lawsuit against a "door clerk" asking for a receipt or a cart wheel lockup. It's not a detainment. If charges aren't filed or your rights aren't violated (Ie: physically detained), you have no case. Civil suites are designed to make a person whole from alleged damages. There are no damages from "Hey can I see your receipt? No? Ok." and "Oh my cart that doesn't belong to me stopped". @kimdeleon268
@kimdeleon268 3 жыл бұрын
It's not about noticing it's about what you can't do. The most we can do is receipt check if they're planning on leaving at one of our doors, LP has more freedom to do what they need to do but associates really can't do anything besides notify LP or their manager/PIC. The reason for this is because if we were going try to stop the cart from leaving, like getting in their way from the doors or touch their cart, they can make a scene that we were being aggressive with them, or they will call in later to make a complaint, etc and then it's instant termination if the video feed shows you do anything like that. Or they can become aggressive with you and push the cart in your way and if you end up injured, that's a liability that the store doesn't want. There are also instances where they go through our emergency exits and honestly the only way we can prevent that from happening is to work in those areas to keep an eye out but we can't do that for long because we still have to do our jobs.

You know something if nobody shoplifted prices would go down, the employees would be paid better and much happier, the store would be better staffed 😮

Kroger's is worth over 33 billion dollars. They could afford to pay their staff better and hire more of them, and have cheaper prices, if they wanted. A mom taking baby formula to feed her kid is not going to make a dent.

@@Courtney1992 The difference here is scale. By all means take the lint from my laundry room, I wouldn't even notice it was gone. Perhaps we could take a step back and examine why people steal in the first place? If the choice was between starving and stealing, would you be a good little citizen and just die? Why do we live a in society where there are jobs to be filled, and enough people to fill them, but there's always a worker shortage? And why do we live in a society where even working people can't afford basics like shelter and food? If you were paid well enough you wouldn't need to steal to survive. If I had $33,000,000,000 I could afford to pay you a decent wage. Anywho, that's enough chit chat for now. I hope you have a good day and a pleasant evening =]

If you are caught shoplifting, off with a finger. Peeling off your fingernail would be the 1st offense. If it happens a 2nd time, goodbye finger.

Why don't they just check everyone's recipes at the doors for pity sake?! They would save so much money and prevent nearly ALL theft. 🤦

I stopped shopping at Fred Meyer because I can't reach the bus stop anymore without the cart locking up. And I'm not going to spend $150 at a grocery to have to drag 100 lbs. of food a quarter mile to the nearest bus stop because Fred Meyer won't allow the bus to put a stop in front of their store and they have android carts that lock before you can reach the station. This is why Walmart is burying smaller competitors.

The cart will not lock up if you have paid for your things. It's not the kind of cart that locks up when you take the cart past the store property. I didnt know Fred Meyer had the authority to put a bus stop near their store.

@@patricklawler7650 Didn't see your other post. What's being talked about here is the carts locking if someone is trying to walk out with a cart of stuff and they have not gone through the cashier to pay. If you pay the cashier disables the lock. If you do not pay the lock is not disabled by the cashier, hence you cant run out!
