LockJaw vs. OSO Barbell Collars

Sometimes it’s the small details in our gyms that make them the most fun to use. After years of absolutely hating the spring collars at the commercial gym I belonged to, I started carrying a set of LockJaw collars back and forth with me.
I loved those collars and I still use a set of LockJaws in my gym today. I also use a second set of OSO collars. Both are amazing. Both work great. Both are reasonably priced. Both will last you a lifetime.
Coming in under $50, either set of collars is a great choice for your gym. Don’t go cheap, though. It’s tempting to buy knock off LockJaws or OSOs for less $ on Amazon or elsewhere. Don’t be tempted.
The knock offs are not as good, will not last, and are a waste of money. Stick with the originals!

Excellent review. The small advantage of the silver colloured OSO , vs other colours, might be when the colour wears off, (I've seen a pic of one), then the silver coating having more similarity with the material underneath makes it look a bit better then when having a red one flaking off. As I said minor detail, but for some can make the difference. Edit: Just ordered both versions, LockJaw and the OSO Collars. And the OSO silver for mentioned reasons 😁.

Every commercial gym I’ve been too has lockjaw collars or similar. Been to a lot of gyms. I do live in New Zealand though so maybe that’s why

And it's crazy how well they hold up in that environment! I don't think the longer lever on the OSO collars would withstand the abuse a commercial gym gives out!

Thanks for this video. The commercial gym I lift at has spring collars too and there’s always a myriad of issues with them. I’m sure I’m going to end up getting a pair of OSO collars to call my own so I don’t gotta deal with the shit ones at the gym.

You'll love having them! Of the two I review in this video, I use the OSO 99.9% of the time now. They really work well, enjoy!

Those became my main collar when the spring collars at the gym would fall off during deadlifts and farmers carries.

my stuff is on my porch with a little bit of exposure to sunlight, heat and even in the negative temps throughout the day so I think I’m gonna go with the metal just because I feel the plastic might deteriorate after a while

I just ordered the lockjaw aluminum and magnetic ones for $55 however, I think the handles are still plastic so that may be the weak spot if it’s exposed so I may just make a point to put them away after I’m done

Honestly, these sit in my garage (which was 4 degrees this morning) and have for many years. I've not noticed any deterioration due to cold or hot. You should be just fine.

Is the lever on the aluminum pair plastic or metal?

It's plastic, but I don't think it would ever break unless severely abused. That said, I've only used the LockJaws for the last year or two. In practice I just like them better.

8:05 - Is that true that quality collars will generally last essentially forever? They don't become loose for whatever reasons and have less grip compared to when they were newer? (to a meaningful degree).

There's always an "it depends" to answers like that. For most garage gym owners, one pair of nice collars will last a lifetime. I've had my lockjaws for over 10 years now and they still work like the day I bought them. That said, I don't drop my barbell (at least on purpose, anyway!). If you are a CrossFit or Olympic lifting athlete who drops their bar on a daily basis, your collars will eventually wear out. That's why many Oly lifting competitions use very expensive screw down collars. So the answer depends on your use. Since most people training in a garage gym are only going to bench, military press, squat, and deadlift moderate weights without ever dropping the bar, they can buy one nice set of collars and forget about it. The few who are doing something different may find they need to replace collars occasionally. Hope that helps clarify and great question!

@@GymCrafter - Definitely depends on use-case, yea. Forgot to add that. Over 10 years of regular use is nuts. Awesome. That was insanely helpful, thank you! I scoured the internet and it's seemingly impossible to find anything on how long collars can be expected to last under different use-cases, for some reason. For me, I might unintentionally be the gentlest person on Earth with my collars, since it's all trap bar, gently lowered onto crash mats. Mostly trap bar RDLs and trap bar squats via standing on a plyo box (with 30 degree squat wedges, so less weight needed there). My whole home-gym is very specific to how I personally want to train lol. I'll just get 1 back-up pair of Rogue Axel collars in case mine break or something, since in Australia I think they're the only quality collars even available for specialty bars. I found out that the regular HG 2.0 ones also work for specialty bars, but are just not as tight.

@@Siberius- That's perfect and exactly why everyone needs their own home gym. No two will ever look alike! As far as those collars, I haven't really used them, so not sure, but with how you describe using yours, I doubt they'll wear out any time soon.

@@GymCrafter - There's another fellow on youtube who has a video where he left his LockJaws on a bar for over 2 months straight, and they still worked perfectly fine (and do years later), so that's pretty cool. They have less squish than Rogue lock-jaw style collars though, so I don't know how much the Rogues would like that one, but I have a better general idea of collars now. I knew there was no longevity in me going to a gym, so I made my own gym that specialises in not taking up permanent space, and specialises in silence lol. Soft padded landings, no metal racks or metal safety arms, no barbells for squats or benching, etc. It's different and fun.

is the lockjaw going to keep the plates from shifting on deadlifts? My current clips, once you put plates on and shift the bar the move like a half inch and it makes me so frustrated. Will they definelty not move when you are putting other weights on?

If you are concerned, I'd go with the LockJaw Pro, they seem to be a little more secure. I have no issues with the standard lockjaw I show here in the video, but I'm typically only deadlifting just over 300 lbs. Never had an issue at all with that weight even when dropping the bar. You should also check out the video that Coop did on the Garage Gym Reviews channel. He takes every model collar and tests them by intentionally trying to get them to move. The LockJaw Pros hold up great in his test and I don't see any reason to spend more on the OSO (now made by Rogue) collars. Hope that helps!!! And yeah, those spring clips are annoying in a bunch of different ways! Hate those things.

@@GymCrafter The spring collars are huge yes. Time for a change. I have ordered both the LockJaw and the OSO. We'll see. According to a buddy the LockJaw's are excellent. He has them for already 10 years now. Still going fine.
