One of the best interview, Bill Broadus has in-depth knowledge of the railway that needs to be record in several formats. It would be nice if a publisher could organize a life story of Bills achievement's telling the true stories on rail operations. More interviews with Bill will give better insight to our modeling operations.

What an absolute pleasure to listen to a man who took pride in his profession, did it well and knew his stuff, and to hear him recount his vast experience over many territories and classes of service. Myself? I was never happier as an engineer than when I was rockin' the pigs along at 70 per in a 5000 class SD 40-2 (ATSF may she rest in peace.) But then, bouncing along on the branch lines with a quartet of high nose GP 9s, hanging on that whistle chord over the crossings was always a blast as well. I was fortunate to start when the WWII guys were retiring. What a picture window into history it was. All I wanted to be was a railroad engineer. I was fortunate indeed. Young 'uns, take heed of this man. Enjoy it while you can. It goes by as fast as an Acela.🚝🙂

NJ Transit had the last of the Gs, 2 opportunities to operate before the final elimination of them. Frame cracks and the transformer coolant was a major issue. PCBs were a issue with EPA due to cancer. The grounds were saturated with it at engine terminals. There were signs up in some locations like Paoli not to walk around on contaminated soil. The soil was trucked out and replaced in many locations. Amtrak also had E44s but we had them cut up at Wilmington Shops due the same issues. You'll find a few pictures, black and platinum mist in the 500 series.

Thanks for this great video and that's awesome that Bill controlled the ICE 1 in 1993! The correction for the modern German Railways, it's "Deutsche Bahn AG" which was formed in 1994, about five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and within that time, Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Reichsbahn (East German version) tried to work together before they merged into the modern DB.

as a kid (early 80s) i use to go down to the railway station when the local shunt rolled in, the station master use to get me a ride on the engine with the crews…naturally i pursued the job and got to sit in the RHS, and you guys are right…it is a seat that not many get to take charge of…and to think i was laughed at in high school when we all nominated what job we wanted to do…beats teaching a room full of kids that have no interest like my school teacher friend…me, office with a rolling view

Only thing I didn't like during my year of training was the way the office folks and execs (Trainmaster on up) treated us like a lower caste. I got tired of being cheated out of pay, which didn't end when I was a control operator. And the unions... bah!

Just wondering: why does AC rectifier gear in the rear preclude an end platform? Is it space within the specified frame length, or is there a radiation problem or some such?? A Marklin/Trix ICE set would look nice as a visitor on that layout. Sorry; can't help it. The trouble with watching you blokes (and a few others) is you spark good ideas; often really good ideas. Only time lacks. Thanks. Peter

The new engines make it inaccessible to go from passenger car to an engine. You'd have to climb up the side of the engine like entering a tree house.
@michlo3393
@michlo3393 9 ай бұрын
To be honest, the engineer is anonymous to everyone but the crew and the few railfans out there who care. The passengers have no connection or interaction with the engineer and if all goes well, it will stay that way. The best part about being an engineer at Amtrak is A)no uniform and B)not putting up with the people!
@stephenjohnson26

We don't get snacks from passengers but if you do your job correctly and stand by the engine at the end of the run, you may get a few "Thank You" comments. I know I have.

good morning dj !!! first, thank you again for all your recent help with my bprr questions... i was wondering if you could advise me on being able to determine when the monessen coke trains, powered by avr/bprr/wle engines and heading north to buffalo, are scheduled to run ? i have spoken to many modelers and several rr workers and no one knows when they run.... being in the pittsburgh area i am hoping you can help us, as if you haven't done enough already !!! btw, you are our last hope for an answer... ps, i live only 15 minutes from ashford junction and don't know their regularly scheduled trains come through...any help would be greatly appreciated and i promise to buy you a primanti "sammich" with a cold beer, of course !!!

Yo DJ I gotta question. Why don’t conductors wear a safety vest with a harness to secure yourself to the car while riding the side. So if they get hit with a ton of slack they cannot fly off the side of the rail car. You could secure yourself to a ladder 🤔

Bill is nice guy but the fastest train in the world is a French TGV at 357.2 MPH. The current world speed record for a commercial train on steel wheels is held by the French TGV at 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph), achieved on 3 April 2007 on the new LGV Est.
@KutWrite
@KutWrite Жыл бұрын
Interesting that even with newer tech, no one has exceeded that record.
@Christiane069
@Christiane069 Жыл бұрын
@@KutWrite The problem with high speed is energy. It takes a huge amount of energy to go fast. This problem force limits to normal use of high speed trains. In France most high speed trains are limited to about 220 Mph or about 320 Kmh. For the speed record the EDF (French electric company) had to raise the voltage from 25 KV to over 30 KV. Therefore this stunt was only possible just to show the technology. Newer fast French trains are more about efficiency, cost, and passenger comfort.

good morning dj !!! quick question, please... just watched your vid on steve johnsons union rr pike ( filmed about a year ago) he noted that the union rr handles at least 1-2 coke trains per day prototypically. as i told you in an earlier note, i model bprr from butler/riker yards ( thanks for the vid link you sent me last week !!!) to south buffalo. we get a coke train from your area about 2 times per month headed by bprr/wle(we)/avr/ carl.exp consists... are those coke trains heading north to s. buffalo some of the same coke drags the union rr handles ? would be nice to know and possibly add some sort of union rr engines to my new carload express roster from your neck of the woods as a south terminal part of my bprr. thanks again dj.... we love you and your work (steve, too !!!) denny armes, supt. bprr

Clairton coke is served by union railroad who brings it to CSX in McKeesport. That would be the CSX coke express cars. NS also picks up their high top cars there. And the wheeling can get to clairton also. But Only wheeling works the coke plant in monesson! Using wle cars. So my guess is that is what you’re seeing. See playlist for steel, find the video on understanding the coke plant where I filmed it with the drone during shutdown
