Every piece of the collection at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum has a story to tell. This often overlooked little engine in the outdoor display area helped the US win WWII! It was a switcher locomotive a large industry that made munitions.

When model railroaders build "Critters" that look like this, a large number of their community brethren turn up their noses and say, "Why don't you build a model of something _real?"_ The old-timers who have been around a very long time smile and say, "You shouldn't say things like that or somebody will show you a photo of the real one." GE and Whitcomb made lots of little critters that got the job done. Glad to know someone preserved it. Stay safe.

The engine in York, Pa was owned by Harley Davison and produced munitions also.

If I remember correctly, only 11 or so were made of these, nice to see another one that survived!

Great story but you're missing one locomotive it is actually the only operational EMD model 40 in the United States right now and it is owned and operated by the Walkersville Southern railroad in Walkersville, Maryland. EMD model 40 number 101 has been alive, well, and very meticulously maintained. It definitely deserved a spot on your list. Possibly with a little more research you would have found it. It's very famous!

There are a total of 9 of these that still exist, although 2 of them don't have much left. So it's more like 7.

Another Great Video! I've gotten to ride behind 2 "War Relics" myself. They're 2 gorgeous 2-8-2 Mikados built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the U.S. Army Transportation Corporation, and used on the White Pass & Yukon Railroad to carry troops and supplies for the War Effort. The 2 locomotives, 190 and 192, are still in operation today! 190 is at Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock, NC, while 192 works at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN. Also, If I may make a suggestion for a future episode, how about one on Soo Line 2719?

Um.. their info is off about how many are left. There's a Model 40 working at of all places a locomotive factory in the states. It's kept in beautiful show room condition and is used to move brand new modern locomotives around the facility.
