Wow, that sucker is HUGE! Knocking out a few stove top seasonings would sure help heat the home during a few cold winter days! I know that's what I do, and my Lodge is the 10.5 inch. Also, I've been using mine regularly since 2015, and it has become much smoother throughout the years. No need for grinding or sanding and I'm glad that I didn't do that. Thank you for the video!

It's way too big for my normal cooking needs, but great if I need it, if that makes sense.

Back in the day. Wood fired ranges had holes (eyes) in them. The number on a skillet matched the hole on the range. The heat ring on a #10 skillet fits a #10 hole. In the early 1900s heat rings started to disappear from some pans, but the number system remained. Lodge uses this old school number system for most of their skillets. The 17" is the only one I know of that they use the actual measurement.

Cast Iron pans are the only kind of pan that I can confidently say will last a lifetime. I bought one back in 2015 and its still holding up well in 2024 despite not even treating it the best cause college. I didn't buy anything fancy either just the ones you see at Walmart but its the perfect pan for when you need to throw things in the Oven or cook on the stove. That being said, I prefer steel cookware and the main reason is because its lighter and I find easier to clean. When it comes to cooking something delicate like a egg I like the cheap nonstick although based on health concerns I may look into avoiding them in the future

I agree cast iron can last a lifetime (and they get better with age). I prefer frying eggs in cast iron: kzfaq.infobOeasVcVJ-g?si=JMVcuVkhwEud_cDj Thanks for your comment

Appreciate the perspective you gave on a 17" pan on the stove. A little too big for our household.

That's a big pan, I would probably use it for roasting meats. I like that cast iron can brown the exterior of a roast on the stove (e.g. beef chuck, pork shoulder) and then transfer it to the oven, then at the end you can turn the drippings into gravy on the stove, all with one pan.

It works great for that, but it also works well for roasting potatoes or other veggies without crowding. It also serves well as a griddle on a kettle style grill. I like mine a lot.

Thanks for the demo, but I have to admit that my OCD got triggered because you ate that egg from a first use unwashed cast iron pan.

Andy, quick question: Can you still season this pan without having a oven big enough to put this size pan in??? Tamsyn
@diyhda
@diyhda 3 ай бұрын
Yes, you can season it on a stove top. You don't have to use an oven.

You have to cook with it more before it becomes actually non stick.

Agreed! This was just the first video showing how it's seasoned out of the box. I've since cooked hamburgers in it to help season it.

I wonder if that size is too heavy for a glass top range.
@diyhda
@diyhda 7 ай бұрын
I don't think the weight would be an issue. Rather, you would just need a burner that's big enough.

That actually wasn't too bad for a new pan. Cook up a couple cast iron pizzas, and that egg will slide around after that...
