Lodge cast iron skillet seasoning instructions - step by step. Recently I recorded a video that said, "can you put a cast iron skillet in a dishwasher" and you can see that right here. But we're going to show you how we're gonna fix this and restore this Lodge cast iron skillet to its uh best use and so let's get to that.
So you definitely don't ever want to put a cast-iron skillet in a dishwasher to try to clean it. But this is what it looks like. I mean, it's rusted all over, even the handle.
And but anyway, this is something that we can fix.
So, the first step what we're going to do; we're going to rinse all this rust out. And then we're going to dry the pan, heat it up, and dry all any moisture out of it. We're going to rub a little bit of bacon grease in this. Now I use bacon grease. You can use pretty much any type of grease that you like to use, but I use bacon grease, lard, and I use Crisco.
But today, we're gonna be using bacon grease on this skillet. And so we'll get it rubbed down and oiled-up, and we're gonna get ready and put this thing in the oven at 350 degrees for one hour.
So anyway, we're going to do the top and the bottom and even the handles and get everything rubbed in real good so it'll bake into this cast iron. And that's how you bake in a coat of seasoning onto a Lodge cast iron skillet.
And so what we're going to do we're going to get ready and place this skillet in the oven. Like I said, we've got a 350 degree preheated oven. But we're going to place this thing on the top rack, and we're going to flip it upside down that way; any excess will drip off and won't pool up into the skillet.
So what we're going to do we're going to get ready and do this another time or two, and that's how you create seasoning.
So just to recap, all we did basically was we cleaned the rust out of the skillet. We took and wiped it down real clean, added some bacon grease to it, wiped that around on the skillet. Placed it upside down in the oven for 350 degrees for one hour. Baked that off. We're letting it cool off naturally for one hour. And uh then uh we're gonna do it again. I mean, the best way to do this is just doing it a couple, two, or three times or just continue to cook bacon grease in it or whatever.
And so you'll have your Lodge cast iron skillet seasoning complete. And it'll be basically non-stick. You can use that skillet from here on out.

@MrCastIron
@MrCastIron Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Personally, I do not sand or grind on any of my cast iron. I do not believe it is necessary. There are other ways to get rid of rust and to season a new skillet. Thank you! I have a question. I got a new Lodge combo , just like yours. I am going to season it. The seasoning process includes putting oil on the outside part of the pot. So, my concern is, if later on I cook in this pot, and I use a regular (not electric) stove, could the pot catch a fire? Because there is oil on the outside of the pot? Would that be safe to cook in it? In terms of a fire hazard?
@MrCastIron
@MrCastIron Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question, and thank you for asking. There is no danger of your cast iron catching fire by using it on the stove because the oil on the outside would already be baked or burned into the iron. That is unless you have an extreme amount of liquified oil that hasn’t been wiped off. Then it could drip onto the burner and have a chance of igniting. I use cast iron every day and never had a flair-up! I hope this helps, my friend!

Mike, what are your thought on using Flaxseed oil to season my cast iron. Is bacon grease a better option? Love your videos my friend.
@MrCastIron
@MrCastIron 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Coleman! Well, I haven’t ever tried flaxseed oil. I know some tout it as the best thing since sliced bread, but all the old-timers say it tends to chip and flake. I’m in the bacon grease, lard, and Crisco camp. I’ve used bacon grease all my life. You know it’s kind of hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Besides that, if it’s not something you use to cook with, why season your pan with it?

Well, I’m sorry I didn’t mention flipping the skillet. It can be fixed pretty easily. Please don’t add any more oil but flip it upside down and place it back into a 450-degree oven and bake it for another hour, and that should take care of that. Let me know how that works for you, ok!?

Is the spot where oil has pooled up, or is it just a dry-looking spot? If excess oil pooled up, flipping it and baking it off again should fix it. But, if it is a flat dry, looking spot, add another very thin coat of oil and bake it once and maybe twice more will fix that. After that, just continue to cook fattier cuts of meat like bacon or 80/20 hamburger, and it will improve your seasoning over time.

@@MrCastIron I have a Dutch oven lid which was in the garage for years. The underside feels smooth but it looks spotty. Like a tiny animal print, very pale rust color spots. Yet you can’t feel it. The whole thing is smooth. I don’t know if that’s normal or not. I scrubbed it with Brillo but that did not make any difference. Got any ideas ? The rest of the Dutch oven is all black
@MrCastIron
@MrCastIron 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, lids draw moisture, so it sounds like the spots are just places where there is very little seasoning left. I would clean it real good and rub your favorite oil on it and bake it in the oven like we did here. On Dutch ovens, when I’m storing them, I usually leave the lid off, so it doesn’t draw moisture. Either that or place a piece of cardboard between the lid and oven so it gets air, and you shouldn’t have that issue anymore.
