Friedrich Gulda (16 May 1930 - 27 January 2000) was an Austrian pianist and composer who worked in both the classical and jazz fields.
Born in Vienna as the son of a teacher, Gulda began learning to play the piano from Felix Pazofsky at the Wiener Volkskonservatorium, aged 7. In 1942, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied piano and musical theory under Bruno Seidlhofer and Joseph Marx.
He won first prize at the Geneva International Music Competition in 1946. Initially, the jury preferred the Belgian pianist Lode Backx, but when the final vote was taken, Gulda was the winner. One of the jurors, Eileen Joyce, who favoured Backx, stormed out and claimed the other jurors were unfairly influenced by Gulda's supporters. Gulda began to play concerts worldwide. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1950. Together with Jörg Demus and Paul Badura-Skoda, Gulda formed what became known as the "Viennese troika".
Although most famous for his Mozart and Beethoven interpretations, Gulda also performed the music of J. S. Bach (often on clavichord), Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Debussy and Ravel. His recordings of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier are well regarded by collectors. Apart from the Well Tempered Clavier, Gulda performed very few other pieces by Bach and recorded even fewer. Gulda's later reliance on co-operating with companies whose recording techniques were primitive in comparison to those espoused by more sophisticated rivals stood him in very poor stead with regard to posterity. The rescued Mozart sonata tapes issued on DG are unbelievably bad in terms of recorded technical quality; likewise the Debussy Preludes and Bach recordings of the late 60s and early 70s.
From the 1950s on Gulda cultivated an interest in jazz, writing several songs and instrumental pieces, and at times combining jazz and classical music in his concerts. In 1956, he performed at Birdland in New York City and at the Newport Jazz Festival. He organized the International Competition for Modern Jazz in 1966, and he established the International Musikforum, a school for students who wanted to learn improvisation, in Ossiach, Austria, in 1968. He once said: "There can be no guarantee that I will become a great jazz musician, but at least I shall know that I am doing the right thing. I don't want to fall into the routine of the modern concert pianist's life, nor do I want to ride the cheap triumphs of the Baroque bandwagon."
In jazz, he found "the rhythmic drive, the risk, the absolute contrast to the pale, academic approach I had been taught." He also took up playing the baritone saxophone.
Phillips Records included Gulda in its Great Pianists of the 20th Century CD box set, which came out in 1999. His piano students included Martha Argerich, who called Gulda "my most important influence," and the conductor Claudio Abbado.
He expressed a wish to die on the birthday of Mozart, the composer he most adored, and did so. He died of heart failure at the age of 69 on 27 January 2000 at his home in Weissenbach, Austria. Gulda is buried in the cemetery of Steinbach am Attersee, Austria. He was married twice, first to Paola Loew and then to Yuko Wakiyama. Two of his three sons, Paul and Rico Gulda, one from each of his marriages, are accomplished pianists.

Maestro Gulda translated music to the audience. No matter what they might have call him. A musician who only can perform Bach, Beethoven or Mozart. But furthermore he played jazz on a pretty high level and also he was a great composer. Always in love with the music , open minded and looking forward! What a great artist!

Freude beim Musizieren zuzusehen. Gulda bewundere ich seit 1968, als ich einige seiner LPs in Hände bekam. Später ist er eher noch temperamentvoller. Diese Aufnahme ist eine große Leistung, faszinierend. Ich vermisse ihn.

Honestly probably the best interpretation of this beautiful concerto that I have seen. Doesn't matter that he plays a few notes wrong. The piece is meant to be JOYFUL. Its meant to have EXUBERANCE! So many interpretations I have listened to miss this in my opinion. Friedrich absolustely nails this interpretation. I mean, listen to this extract at 12:48. Even at Beethoven's most struggling moments in his life, he was able to write with such joy and Friedrich captures this perfectly!

Gordon Stainforth hahahahaha yes ... and also Beethoven as a living character!!! I love the forward momentum that shows how troubled he is and doesn’t understand what’s happening, because of his feeling of isolation from the world. But Beethoven’s humour tells me how he’s looking back on his past and his fantasy of freedom for life, it’s so astonishing how it translates into his music!!!

Hi, Gordon! Long time no see! Hope you are well and busy in these difficult times. We wrote each other years ago on the Kubrick Multimedia regarding all the many great works used in his films over the years. I recall stating that it would be nice to hear Shostakovich in his music sometime. Funny thing, the Waltz #2 turned up in his very last masterpiece. Thank you, Gordon! Since 2001, I've been slowly working on the 9/11 Requiem (one movement was performed in Bremerton in 2002) as well as teaching music and completing a western rock opera. Be well.

thanks for your answer on this autumn-like saturday in 2017. Please visit the channel "Nocturneine" and please find there the according to me most impressive recording ever of this masterpeace from Ludwig van Beethoven. Conductor: Ferdinand Leitner, Piano: Wilhelm Kempff and Berliner Philarmonic in 1961. This recording is made just a few days after the beginning of building The Wall in Berlin. You hear the fear for the future and the totaly sadness of all. The music gives once again hope for better days. Enjoy, and if you like: give me a note how you liked it.

... if only someone had taught him how to do it ... Sorry to say that, but his "performance" as a conductor is simply a farce. It's not only because of his unconventionel movings, but even more it is not precisely and an orchestral musician has no chance to follow this style of conducting.

he cared about nothing but music. No importance in dressing code, having a conductor, or any other rule. He wanted the score there and he had the score there. 26:58 ... I think this performance is wonderful... just wonderful! Is it not fascinating, sincerity is a rare and precious commodity. Interestingly, a lesser musical talent may adopt a conservative exterior and demeanour to camouflage an inadequacy in musicality and charisma. Truly a grand performance: Gulda's interpretation is straightforward, but plenty of attention to the trills and transitions inside the 1st movement. And what a movement it is! Its length is more than half that of the entire concerto, but that authoritarian mode befits it, in that I see Herr Beethoven's propose here. He's declared the pianoforte concerto era has yielded to the symphonic projection of musical ideas at the heart of the composer's intents. As the piano is the most comprehensive of all musical instruments, so it now becomes the voice of the total effort orchestras are to achieve. It may be my new hearing aids, but the piano sounds as if it's not a Steinway, but perhaps a Fazioli? It may be it's tuning. Just me. I dearly love Gulda, his many insights and superb interpretation. He's always 5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
