I can tell from my own experience just by listening to the sound of the bite that this is some REALLY hard wood (usually the higher the pitch the striking sound makes = the harder the wood). The toughest stuff I've ever tried to chop and bust for firewood was Curly Maple; it took a 5 lbs splitting maul and a 15 lbs sledge just to get it to bite. Then four iron wedges. THAT'S FOR ONE SPLIT. I don't miss that wood, that's for sure.

Karan Guragain Let’s agree to disagree. If most people are too poor to afford chainsaws, then you can’t say you’re doing it to honor tradition. You are doing it by hand because you have no other choice. Now if you all had power saws and STILL chose to do it manually with an axe, then you could claim tradition. Here’s the messed thing about living in modern America: a decent axe costs literally the same money as a good hike quality saw. Ridiculous in my opinion.

Great job man . II did this 10 years ago fell down a 60 feet tall and 16 inches diameter maple tree with a $28 axe I was 45 years old and all my friends and my family members were watching me sweat and hiring the tree like a crazy but inside me I was so happy like getting all my negative energy out . It took me almost 2 hours and a half but that was the best feeling I’ve ever got I really don’t know up to this moment how to describe my feeling when I saw the tree falling down. Real big triumph .

@@tae-ohlee7165 exactly my thinking. I'm from north VI and I have felled a lot of the trees he mentions. And as I said above, a lot of the people in the smaller towns on the island have accents like this. Campbell River, Sayward, Port McNeil etc.

THANK YOU, For your amazing unique messages. I thought I was watching a man cut down a tree with an axe. Then at 17:37 I am hit with a flood of emotion and crying for the words shared. I've been ill, and was in bed ridden state just 2 months ago, today I am sharping an axe to cut a small tree for myself for the first time for firewood, haven't found anyone local who sees my struggle and is willing to help, except for men who want to sleep with me in return for that help. So instead I am becoming self responsible by watching KZfaq and using pure determination and will to survive in hopes to get through this hard time. Your words let me know there are still good people in the world, THANK YOU
