In this video I demonstrate how to use Logic's built-in drum replacement/doubling tool. I've demonstrated this on the channel previously, but I think it's time for an update!
If you would like to practice using the drum replacement tool yourself, I have included the drum multitracks I used in this video of free:

Great tutorial as always. One thing I would like to mention is that when you use samples, you need to be very careful with phase. Try flipping the polarity on the sample track or change the phase by moving the track just slightly (on sample basis basically, not ms). :)

Thanks brother. By the way i was just writing so no need to have more mics. Just running down rough takes so i can arrange,etc.

Would love to see you make some edm drum fundamental tutorials. I looked it up but only found stuff like "use this awesome patterns"; not really that helpful in understanding what's going on and if you want to come up with something that really fits your own music. If you think it's worth your time please add this to your list of video that you'll make in the future. And thanks as always.

Awesome method. What if I want to use a snare hit from a different point in the song to replace a few hits that sound a bit too different, due to a missed hit? How do I set a good snare hit from the same song up as my replacement sample?

Great tutorial, maybe the best Logic teacher on KZfaq! I can't seem to see how to get factory folder and the drum single hit options on my logic...? doesn't seem to be any help out there for this and not in the sound manager as well... ? Hope you or someone knows what I'm talking about :)
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Ah! Yes, it's because that folder is located in the Sampler instrument library. It will only show up when you load Sampler for Drum Replacement. However, you can also access that folder by loading Sampler on a software instrument, and then inside of Sampler in the preset menu at the top, you'll see a category called "Factory". You can load the sounds from there was well.

Thanks for the great content! I am having an issue when trying to replace or double my kick or snare. When I select the desired audio track and control D I get a message saying "command not available because theyre are no audio regions selected" This seems to happen on about 80% of the audio files in this project, oddly enough only working on some squareblock looking guitar takes with little transient info. I've also tried copying the audio and putting it into a new track, which didn't work. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? The drums are close dynamic mic'd audio files.
@HiggsMusicOfficial
@HiggsMusicOfficial Жыл бұрын
Have you tried flattening/merging your takes? I was having the same issue until I realized that Logic will only allow you to use the drum replacement tool after the track is flattened.

I still have so much to learn about recording, but how does adding a Gain plug in helps with phase issues? This is probably a dumb question, I'm sorry for asking.

Very interesting, didn‘t know about this. But is this also possible with the Logic drummer that creates only one drummer track with all the Instrumentes in one track. I know I can put the single drums in different tracks ( … +) but then I can‘t see the audio waves, just the names of the tracks which I can change in volume, add plugins, etc. But I couldn’t apply your tips, except I convert the Drummer track into MIDI tracks and separate them then … Is your tip just meant for (with microphones) recorded drums? I hope you know what I mean as my English is not so good to express my problem in English. But this is a general problem for me in Logic: to separate the single drum instruments into fully independent tracks (as having recorded them with microphones)
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 2 жыл бұрын
So you have a few options if you're using Drummer. You won't need to convert to audio, because you already have the MIDI data right there in the drummer regions. What I would recommend doing is converting the drummer regions to MIDI. Control-click > Convert > Convert to MIDI Region. Then duplicate the MIDI region to another software instrument track. Then delete all of the notes except for the instrument you want to replace/layer, then add whatever instrument or sample you like. Then you'll have a separate replacer track that you can blend in with the rest of the drums. Alternatively, you could also swap out the instrument with another sound inside of Drum Kit Designer, although the options are limited.

Hey at 5:30 you mention the new sample’s root note must be the same as the trigger note, do you mind explaining this a bit more? Why is that the case? And how do you know what your trigger note will always be? Thanks!
@Ebidle
@Ebidle Ай бұрын
in case you haven’t figured it out. if you go into the midi scroll look at what piano note your trigger note is listed as and that’s what your trigger note is!

I accidentally replaced my drum instead of doubling it Logic Pro X. Is there a way to get that audio back so I can use it still? The first track is now muted and I can’t get it back. There is a red dot on the tracks I have replaced instead of doubling. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is a great technique I’ve been using for years, but it DOES beg the question “why record acoustic drums in the first place?” I guess capturing the performance of a human drummer is easier than the work of humanizing and randomizing a drum machine or step sequencer. I like mixing the acoustic source with drum samples I like. Now, if I hear a hi hat track with zero snare bleed, I know the original hi hat mic tracks have been replaced.
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, no drum instrument plugin even comes close to the sound of real drums, recorded in a good acoustic space, with nice microphones. Although, I do prefer layering in a kick and snare sample. But that's the key word "layer" - not replace. You're taking drum samples that can be perfectly isolated and phase aligned, and processed, and layering them with a drum recording, that cannot be individually phase aligned or isolated, for the best of both worlds IMO. You also get get the feel and groove of a real drummer. For rock and metal music, I think this is a necessity. Anytime I hear "machine gun drums" in a modern rock/metal mix, I'm immediately turned off. I feel like it's nearly impossible to re-create the dynamics and slight variances you get in a real acoustic drum kit, but that's just me. For any other genre, I'm down for an all sample approach.

@@MusicTechHelpGuy I’ve been a real drum advocate all my life, but I’m starting to change my mind. I often recorded acoustic drums with 10 inputs (Apollo Twin X + MOTU 8 pre) and I’d borrow high-end mic’s and pre-amps from a studio friend… that I couldn’t afford. The results were good, but it was a huge effort to setup and tweak, and comping multiple takes could get complicated. What I realized was the ‘performance’ of the drummer was key - not the drum sounds. I could have gotten similar results asking the same drummer to play eDrums and just capture the midi, then use the sampled drum sounds I prefer. Now… there are certain live drum sounds that are tough to replicate. For example, John Boham’s famous sound (using only 4 mic’s). But for most studio sounding drums, I’m leaning to no drummer necessary. I know it’s controversial.

Why are people against this? Because the drummer didn’t actually hit that sample with his hand or foot? If I replaced an actual kick drum with a better kick drum and the drummer hit that one instead, would that not be ok? 😂

Yeah, some people are purists. I don't get that attitude. Any tool I can use to make a recording sound better is in my toolkit. Auto-Tune, Melodyne, Drum Replacement, Comping Multiple Takes, Time Correction, these types of things have been around for decades in one shape or another. They're just easier to implement nowadays. Drum replacement isn't going to automatically make you a better drummer, it's just going to make the mix better. I think purists are just people that don't know how to, or don't want to learn to use modern production tools. In 2022 not a lot of independent musicians and bands have $800 to fork out for 1 day at a pro studio with high end mics, preamps, and a great acoustic space -- just to track drums. And even then, you still might layer some samples under the drums -- just look at every modern rock/metal band of the last 10-15 years.

Such a terrible ideology, agreed. Your job as a Producer or engineer is to get the best tones and performance possible, period. How you get there shouldn’t matter. Plus, many people literally use a sample from the actual session they are doing the replacement on. How much more natural can you get?
