In this tutorial learn how to covert audio files to MIDI sequences within Logic Pro. The content within the audio file is interpreted by the the score editor, those notes are then converted to MIDI information and can be triggered using any virtual instrument. The accuracy of this technique depends on the complexity of the audio being converted and although it might not be perfect every time this technique lends itself to be a creative tool when writers blocks hits.

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. We'll look into that. One thing you can check is your gain stages to make sure your not pushing the input to hard during recording. We'll send you a link to our video covering the subject.

thanks chris and everyone else at WinkSound. Your tutorials were some of the very first I ever started watching on KZfaq and that was 2 years ago. I bookmarked allot of them & I often come back to revise certain aspects whenever I need answers. I'm still enjoying learning logic and thanks for these videos. Wishing you all the best #creditWhereCreditsDue

Hi, thanks for your question. The audio to MIDI conversion works well for monophonic material such as vocals or single note instruments. If you wish to deconstruct polyphonic material such as guitar strums your best option is Melodyne DNA from Celemony(dot)com. This software and plugin can detect individual notes from a complex source like a guitar strum and places them on a piano roll. From there you can change chord, tunes strings and export as a MIDI file to repurpose later.

Hold Option and scroll the mouse wheel. There are also sliders in the bottom-right of the arrange window that increase and decrease the vertical and horizontal scale.

Hi @daaameee This technique is useful when arranging instrumentation. An example would be say you have an acapella performing a certain melody and you'd like to add supporting instrumentation to accent certain phrases or passages. You can convert the audio performance to a MIDI performance and assign new sounds to that melody line, say a flute or synth pad. -Mateo

@louiecord Hi, thanks for watching! You can use the slice to MIDI function within Ableton to convert audio to midi. Check out our blog at Blog(dot)WinkSound(dot)com where we just posted a tutorial on how to do this.

If the track you're backing up is kind of in pieces, you can also opt to bounce it to a spare audio file and thereby prevent yourself from losing the audio version for good.

If you create a seperate midi track first, and have that highlighted when you create your audio-to-score, it creates a new midi track, instead of destructively changing your audio. So then you'll have two tracks - the original audio, in blue, and a green midi version.

@MrJiibbo Yes, audio to midi. Check out Celemony's Melodyne does that well. Ableton is good with the Audio to MIDI as well. We'll keep our eye out for other solutions.

@MrJiibbo Hi, thanks for getting in touch. Logic is an Apple product so it only works on Mac computers. Are you looking for a music production software to use with your PC?
@WinkSound
@WinkSound 14 жыл бұрын
@TheMagnumGuitar That depends on the software whether it incorporates that functionality or not. A stand alone/plugin software which does this very well is Melodyne. I'll add a video response which explains how to use Melodyne to convert audio to midi. Are you on Cubase?
@brendabretner3040

Just to let you know that it is NOT destructive . The Audio file in beneath the new Midi region and also note that the Audio must be a monophonic file for proper conversion .
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 10 жыл бұрын
First you should mention that Audio to Score only works well with monophonic material. Second, it is NOT destructive. It just overlaps a MIDI region on top of the audio region you had before. Just create a software instrument, and drag the MIDI region onto it. Third, you can also just create a SI track in advance, select it, then double click the audio region, run Audio to Score, and the MIDI region will be created on the SI track.
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 10 жыл бұрын
You have to assign an instrument to the Software Instrument track, and there are also usually a lot of velocity variances (sometimes notes that are there, but have a velocity of 0).
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 10 жыл бұрын
***** If you did it the way he did in the video, you'll have to drag the MIDI region onto a software instrument track and choose an instrument. Doing it his way just puts a MIDI region on an audio track.

The beeps are probably a sine wave or the electric piano. Try a Channel Strip Setting -- one of the acoustic pianos. If it still doesn't make sense, it's because this function simply doesn't work very well.

Hi @ektor880 You can do this by connecting a MIDI controller to Logic, then record arm the track with the instrument you want to use. Now you should be able to play the instrument over the other midi info you have. It' might have a bit of lag depending on your buffer settings but you'll be able to record the performance you want. Then quantize. Let us know if this helps.

Hi @garn2008 Logic Studio requires you get a license for it to work, which means buying the software. Check out Logic Express. It has pretty much all of the features of the full program (plugins, virtual instruments, etc...) at half the cost. What exactly are you trying to do with the audio you have? Mateo

@WinkSound
@WinkSound 12 жыл бұрын
@iplaydrumsye Hi. A quick solution could be bouncing the click track as audio, send the click to an aux track and use that aux track to feed the output that would then go to the drummers headphones. We'll see what we can do to put together a video demonstrating how the one would go about routing this scenario. Thanks for watching and feel free to get in touch with further video suggestions by writing to us at Questions@WinkSound(dot)com

Sorry guy's, yu are wrong on many points: 1/ Audio to score is a Transiant detection with note detection, No chords and it is working very bad, almost unusable. 2/ when it is transform in midi, the audio track is under the midi track, as you can see the midi appears on an Audio track which is not playable in Logic. Beware when you advise. good luck
