the multimeter is fantastic at analyzing prof mixes. I do that all the time, and write down notes fx about the balance of the frequencies, rms and so on

Chris! Wonderful video tutorial. You're a natural teacher! I worked with you on your mix-mentor program. It was so helpful in my project. This multi-meter tutorial really illuminates and answers a lot of questions I have about Loudness, Peak, RMS. Thanks again! Gregg

YOOOO this is one of the first KZfaq tutorials I've seen that outright mentions Intersample peaks! It's even a difficult term to search for as well, you sir absolutely know your stuff!

@NatesiKness Fabfilter’s limiter (Pro-L2) has an option to show intersample peaks. They’re important to know about when you’re driving a mix really hard for loudness.

@@russellszabadosaka5-pindin849 facts dude. Most people don't know to set your limiter some fraction of a DB below the 0 threshold and those that do rarely understand why
@russellszabadosaka5-pindin849
@russellszabadosaka5-pindin849 3 жыл бұрын
NatesiKness you’re right, people should read more about audio if they want to be competitive. I found out about intersample peaks in the book Mixing Explained by Bobby Owsinski. There was a small sidebar on one page that was a short interview with a guy that worked for Avid. Ever since then, I set my limiter’s output at -0.1. That was in like 2007, and until Fabfilter L2 came out, I rarely ever heard anyone else mention it.

Dude, I just recently started mastering for the first time and didn't realize you could set integrated LUTS with this. Also I think I might have been reading the goniometer wrong to some degree and I finally understand the "X" shape... From what I've heard, good widening tools won't actually cause phase cancellation, but obviously this video shows that it still isn't desirable to stretch it too far. Thanks for this!

Just super helpful. Thank you! I have to admit that goniometer is still a little confusing to me but the rest of the video was invaluable.

Basically you want the goniometer to have a more flat line in mono, (vertical) you don't want too much stereo action (horizontal) as that shows phasing or stereo issue's. Play with mid/side mixing to see how you can make differences between mono and stereo imaging. 💯 You'll get the hang of it. 👍🏿

This correlation meter is a very valuable tool if you are pressing your work to vinyl. Checking that your stereo sources are in phase say for example drum overheads can help you avoid any needle skipping after the vinyl is manufactured. A fix for this would be just narrowing the stereo pan of your drum overheads a bit.

Awesome info brother, Thank you for your time and educational channel. Question- Do you ever use the directional mixer to pan a stereo track instead of the pan knob? i.e. stereo guitar track panned right 30 deg and piano panned left 20. If they are stereo tracks is the directional mixer better as a panning alternative rather than the pan knob made more for mono tracks? Thank you.

Cool, but, in this configuration, meter on the stereo out bus, there are two faders post meter. Those two faders do affect the bounce, so metering from the stereo out bus really doesn't give accurate info about the file you will bounce. My question is, how do you get the multimeter post "everything" affecting the bounce? Can you help me with this question? Thank you.

Have been using the goniometer for a while. Thank you for the clear explanation, makes it a bit less opaque. You go into things that you can add which make the correlation go bad. What about if the correlation's already not so great without you adding those odd effects? How do you fix it?

@pop9900
@pop9900 3 жыл бұрын
Drop your favorite pop song into Logic and check the loudness. Most professional mixes are actually at least -6 LUFS or more. Idk why this advice of -14 is always given
@_TheModernCreative
@_TheModernCreative 3 жыл бұрын
@@pop9900 they want to adhere to loudness standards. Of course...rules are made to be broken. Bear in mind, pro level sound is mostly being mixed and mastered by very expensive gear that can break the rules in an elegant way. Not often the case when completely “in the box”.
