I feel like if Loki does have a saving grace, it's that when he loses, he's clearly mortified. He's not so deluded that he can't tell when he's lost. And there's nothing wrong with him wanting to win, he just needs to learn to occasionally accept help from others and not always be so alone. I think that's achieved when he says "We have a Hulk" (echoing Tony's comment to him). He's finally seeing some value in being part of a team. It also shows he's been keeping such points in mind, even if they didn't resonate right away.

Good food for thought about the borderline diagnosis. I used to date someone with unverified bpd. She and I were not a good match. I felt for her when it was over, though. Made me wonder who'd be a good complement for someone like her.
