My sincere apologies to Sorellacanela (03:17) as I misinterpreted the coordinates I used in this segment. I still felt they were lolita and I did not intend to call them cosplay but I was trying to convey that I interpreted them as more character direct coords, therefore, being cosplay lolita. However, Soranchella did not intend to style them in this way and meant them to be more character inspired and was still representing herself, not the character. I’m definitely not super versed in this topic as I mentioned and this is totally my mistake for misinterpreting the submission. Judging by the way that the dress up game described it, I wouldn't call it cosplay. I think the fashion brand and the game coincide to promote each other in a way. The game makes you want to buy the clothes. Unless you are using the dress up game to make OCs and want to cosplay your OCs so you buy the clothes to cosplay them, but then that would fall into using Lolita pieces to cosplay a character. Also am I the only one who feels like red gingham would look super cute with the cow dress?

My mind went to a red "strawberries and cream" themed outfit (red bolero, red shoes/socks, red beret, strawberry bag). Or making Banana or strawberry milk (with pink or pale yellow colours instead). It might be a challenge since it's an OP but it would definitely be a fun coord to attempt!!!

I play the game since years, Nikki is the character we dress but this isn't considered ''cosplay'' because in the game, the suits have designers, so in the end Nikki is a model. Since it's not Nikki's suit, but a creation by Nikki or another designer i wouldnt call it ''cosplay''.

The game Love Nikki Dress up Queen is a fashion dress up game. The clothes do not represent specific characters, they're just things you can wear in game. I would love to see you play the game and check out the lolita outfits! It would take you a while to build up your closet though.

Yes! I actually first got into Love Nikki to practice making coordinates with the lolita pieces in the game! It helped me feel a bit more involved in the fashion when I couldn't afford to build up my wardrobe, so I'm super grateful for the diverse fashion styles in the game

I think the explanation of the relationship (or in many cases, lack of a relationship) between lolita and cospaly was good, but I personally don't see how the Love Nikki dress could be construed as cosplay at all. It's from a fashion game, it's not associated with any specific character, and the point of the collaboration seems to be "wouldn't it be cool to have this fashion piece to coordinate and style in real life?" rather than ever considering the dress a "love nikki cosplay." It's sort of like if a brand existed digitally before it existed in real life. In my opinion, at least, it's not really cosplay if the point of it is to style it in your own way from the beginning.

Love Nikki is a fashion dress up game and includes many outfits that are lolita fashion (its even one of the in game tags). The outfit does appear in the game but isn't representative of any of the character, so it would be a lolita fashion coord that appeared in the game. I wouldn't necessarily call it a cosplay (Edit: Also the company that made it has reproduced other non-lolita outfits for the game as fashion outfits).

i don’t think i’d call a dressup game outfit cosplay, especially since (a lest personally) i wouldn’t say that outfit is immediately recognizable to the character or iconic for the game. since the game centers around fashion and creating looks, it’s more of a fashion guide or source for inspiration

One small thing to clarify about cosplay-- not everyone who is in cosplay will want to interact as the character! It's always good to ask if it's okay to interact with them in character.

i wouldn't think of the bear dress as a cosplay, i see it more as how old Betsy McCall paper dolls were used to advertise the clothes she was wearing. like you saw them on the doll and then oh i'll buy those clothes for my kid. Seems like a new version of that to me. but i could be wrong!

Once I wore a coordinate that I wanted to represent Ladybug from Miraculous Ladybug to a con, and I went to the store with my friend afterward (we were both still in cosplay). A little girl looked at me and knew exactly who I was. I was very proud that my lolita Ladybug cosplay was so recognizable 🥰

I think lovenikki is super inspired by tons of different fashion styles so dressing from the game for me doesn’t feel like traditional cosplay IMO there’s a Lolita tag within the game that has some really beautiful cool stuff.... it would be interesting to see you go through the games tag and share your thoughts on the “Lolita” tag within the game ☺️

I have a set from Nikki tomorrow (i did a video about the brand recently!) and i don't consider it cosplay. The game is about fashion, so i don't really consider wearing the clothing as "cosplaying a fictional character." I like wear the clothes just because i like them, not because I'm trying to be a character. I worry about telling people I like that brand though because i do worry that strict lolitas will chastise me for "cosplaying" but i just love the clothes from the game 😭

Even though the Love Nikki set isn't strictly cosplay imo, I'm so glad you got the chance to talk about the differences and overlaps between cosplay and lolita! As a long time cosplayer that is finally taking the plunge with lolita its nice to see that creative element of creating coords inspired by characters! I was never sure if it was possible to honour a cosplay concept and still be faithful to lolita fashion, but your explanation really helped!

I'm not an expert in cospaly or lolita, but to me the 'character inspired lolita' reminds me of Disneybounding, which started because adults aren't allowed to wear costumes to Disney parks. It's not a costume, but it's still a way to creatively interpret a character. There's probably some lolita Disneybounds, now that I think about it.

I think that its easiest to compare it to another subculture. Cosplaying as a goth is strange but if youre cosplaying as like marceline from adventure time if she was goth then its fine, but people wearing gothic fashion arent neccesarily cosplaying

i like both of these coordinates! i like that the “cosplay” one is versatile, and the cow print one is adorable. I wouldn’t really consider the love nikki one cosplay, because there are probably hundreds of dresses in love nikki, and i don’t think that one is super hyped. unless someone was a huge fan i don’t think they’d realize, which defeats it being cosplay i think.

As an avid love nikki player I feel like I can provide some clarity on where I think the dress lies on the cosplay - lolita spectrum! There are actual characters in the game that are part of an actual story, but they almost always wear the same stock outfits. The dress up portion is more game based (different clothing pieces are worth different points etc.) or more paper doll based (people dressing up their own personal avatars in fun clothes). So really, I think that anything outside of the stock costumes the actual characters wear leans more toward lolita than cosplay. Although I'm sure it could be worn as a cosplay I wouldn't really consider it a love nikki costume since it's not the dress she wears as a character in the story portion of the game. Sorry if this made no sense and was kind of ramble-y 😅 I'm just excited to see two of my interests in one video! I was so happy when I saw the collab announcement - ln has some really amazing dresses, both lolita and not!

So, the cosplay dress, while from the game, I don't really think of it as a cosplay. It was originally in the game. Since the game is a fashion game and it's not meant to be a replica of the character and is a coordinate he game created and made real.

Since the game it’s in is a fashion dress up game and it was a collaboration between the companies I’d say it’s much closer to a “true” Lolita coord than a cosplay

Okay, I was also pleasantly surprised at how cute the cow dress is,. x'D Though I think it would go better with a sailor hat! And I'd add a choker--maybe a ribbon bell choker--it ironically fits the cow theme and WHO KNOWS it could be a look, and definitely add sweets accessories like icecream/cookies/chocolate to it! You could also brooch something on the ribbon or let some charms dangle from it. And I think it might look good in a striped or gradient wig! Maybe a split but I feel like that would take away from the dress too much.

A dress-up game uses clothes from reality and fantasy. But in this context, to me it is like a diffrent version of a fashion illustration. As for cosplay vs. Lolita. I think a big factor, besides trying to be on a noise of a character. I think the construction/and fabrics used. Say a lot more. Because people may want to wear a version of a look a character wears in a more casual setting.

lor you look cute in anything. ive played love niki, and the characters wear lolita fashion along with other styles, so i think that bear outfit in general is very lolita fashion friendly. also as soon as i saw that dress come out i thought of you cause bears ha ha. thank you for sharing the differences between cosplay and lolita inspired cosplays, and just inspired lolita, i love how you always have something more meaningfull to say in your videos.

Yes Love Nikki is an incredible game, with a main cast of characters and incredible storylines! So like you could cosplay as the main character Nikki herself, or Bobo or Lunar etc. But yeah most of the clothes aren't character specific! 💖 Side note- I've been hooked on this game for like 3 years lol..it's amazing. Mostly cause of the insane world building and how the story surprisingly includes political strategy, war, blood curses, and secret societies. All that with fabulous fashion styles XD it's wild! Btw you look amazing and so pretty in all 😻💖💕

another thing I really like about Love Nikki is that it's not pay to win. There are so many free ways to get diamonds that you don't feel left out even if you don't spend money. Of course, I always get the monthly card and usually get any like $1 specials they have lol. Honestly I spend more time playing love nikki than I do watching netflix, and I pay $13 a month for that, so like, worth.

When I went to love Nikki's event a few years ago, they had a few independent designers who came and had collaborated with them to help design the outfits in the game. They make the outfits and sell them from time to time. So no, I wouldn't call it a cosplay at all.

I play Love Nikki and whilst some of the stuff in the game that's tagged as lolita wouldn't translate well to IRL lolita, there's definitely pieces I'd love to have IRL (including one that is on DI that I've been eyeing) and I don't think it's cosplay bc, like you said, it's a fashion game. If you wore, say, the character Bobo's outfit (which is very lolita inspired) then, yes, that would be cosplay, but wearing one of the items that's just an option for dressing up doesn't feel like it counts to me.

Oh! The 'Cosplay' dress is actually a collaboration dress with a Japanese dress up girl game franchise- the 'Nikki' games! Im not sure if the dress is designed first and added to the game, or if its designed for the game first and made physically, or if its designed and released at the same time, but this particular one is a Love Nikki collaboration. Theres several collaboration dresses!

In the sims, they have moschino clothes. But I don’t think anyone would consider dressing in that brands matching items a “sim” cosplay. It’s sorta the same with this dress, just a colab between a company and game for advertising purposes. And the advertising works lol, I want that dress now .

Very interesting video, the introspectation into cosplay vs lolita was quite good. Unsuprisingly I found the cow print adorable, but was suprised. I couldn't imagine it would work out so well, rodeo clown sounds GREAT.

The connection between lolita and cosplay reminds me of a time when I really wanted to cosplay Liechtenstein from Hetalia, whose design is lolita-inspired (Along with the character Belarus, which her design is also lolita-inspired as well) and thinking of doing a coord inspired by Liechtenstein, but alas, I don't do classical lolita (because my whole wardrobe is sweet) and there are so many pieces from Innocent World that fit her so well but Innocent World isn't really nice to my Wide Ass Ribs and boobs sadly 😔

I really think that a Love Nikki/Shining Nikki dresses state really depends on the way you wear it. If it is paired with all the things that the original in-game set has (meaning down to the last bit with exact wig and such) it is a cosplay of that set. If you coord diferently it is a separate outfit all together, without being cosplay.

I was actually eyeing both of these outfits a while back. Literally all the lolita I own atm is animal themed stuff. I have a red panda jsk coming in sometime late this year along with a tiger prince ouji set, then I currently have the soul magician ouji set (from the same company, Nikki tommorow). Also as for the teddy bear set you got, I don't think it's cosplay tbh. It's more like an item from a game turned irl, like a sword from Minecraft being sold in Walmart. I think it can be a cosplay, but one could argue that anything can be made a cosplay.

The Nikki Tommorrow set was a genuine collab with Devil Inspired. Meaning they released it as an in game set at the same time that it was released irl for purchase. Honestly I wish more Love Nikki originals would be released as real fashion sets.

Strawberry milk or milk tea themed looks with the cow dress! Pink and strawberry accessories would look really cute, but also what if you had a teacake hat or accessory? So I play Love Nikki and am a cosplayer who has cosplayed a character from Love Nikki! Basically in the game there are characters, who have their own specific styles and personalities in the game’s story mode, and then there are outfits (or “suits”) that have a lot less to do with the story and are more just cute outfits to play with like in a traditional dress up game. The outfit you have is definitely one of the outfits (suits) and not something that represents one of the characters specifically! When I cosplayed Nikki for example, it very much focused on her pink color scheme, while a Kimi cosplay would focus on black and white with stripe and flower motifs. Hope this is helpful input from a totally different perspective! :)

I've actually had my eyes on that Milk dress for a while now! You can even get a milk carton purse. When it comes to clothing in games, I don't think it's cosplay if you aren't intentionally dressing as a character, especially dress up games. I had an Assassins Creed Jacket I regularly wore in the fall because I just LOVE the design and I never got so much as an odd look for it.

As a Cosplayer... The Love Nikki game is also a gray area for me. The bear set is not really connected to a single character (at least my brain does not connect it), so I do see more like a "Game inspired fashion" that you definitely can use for cosplay if you wish, but isn't completely meant for it. Love Nikki does have a ton of actual characters with personalities and many seperate story Arc's, so usually if you want to cosplay someone, then you would pick a look that is a bit more connected to one character.

When I was starting in cosplay, I used to like Card Captor Sakura's dresses, but I truly never liked Sakura a lot, so I used the dresses for my daily routine. I just liked to feel cute and nice in it.

I'd guess you could use the outfit from the dress-up game to make a cosplay but on it's own it feels more like merchandise.

For the cow dress you could use grass or hay colors or elements, that's what cows eat. I was also thinking apples

I don't think it's a cosplay because it's not a specific character or set of characters (ie. Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Aliens from Toy Story)

I have been super behind on youtube stuff, so I only just got to this video... I was so worried Lor was going to hate that cow dress because I actually ordered it myself months ago in a group order with a friend! Seeing the dress on someone and hearing such complimentary things makes me so happy and excited for it ;; Just waiting for when it is safe for me to go and see them so i can collect my items

I personally love when people do a lolita coord to represent a character, as long as they do it right :) then it’s like cosplay, but also with a new spin on it

As a LN player, cosplayer, and fashion enthusiast: not cosplay! Not only are the suits (coords) in LN not representing the main character, but just fun things to wear, you also dont have the intent of cosplay and you're just wearing it as clothes :) 💕

I so desperately want to see the cow print with a red bandana, a black or dark brown cowboy hat, cowboy boots and just full cow soooo cow. A holster belt and a lasso too! Unironically I love cowboy aestheics soooo much. It could also be cute with a bunch off strawberry or banana accessories so you're a different flavor of milk! Ooooo a chocolate one? I now have a image of a red hood over it too, shit that cow dress might be my new dreamie

Yup, I agree. As a Love Nicki player, the set you're wearing doesn't represent a character, although there are character inside of Love Nicki. So it's just fashion. At least I can live my lolita fashion dream inside of Love nicki, and even more with the upcoming Shining Nicki (a 3D detailed fashion game, which would be Love Nicki's continuation)
