Check out my follow up improved review of this film here: • Lomochrome Metropolis ...
I had the opportunity to test Lomochrome Metropolis a few months before its release. I want to thank Birgit with Lomography USA for reaching out. this film has a unique muted bleach bypass look to it. whats unusual is they say it can be shot from 100-400 ISO. I shot at 200 but found all my images quite overexposed so I would rate this as at least an 800 ISO film if I were to test it further. you can purchase the film here at the Lomography website. that is if it is in stock.

I think this film was designed for Gotham City. I shot the Purple version of it and like this one, you just have to "let it be". The photo of your daughter with the red top and the stop sign in the back was my favourite of the bunch. I like how Lomography USA reaches out to you guys as well :) #LomoHatesMe haha.

OC how you doing my brother. thanks for taking time to check this out, I must be hitting the big time. its interesting that was your favorite shot because my wife and i have different favorites also.yes someone else told me the guy on the bicycle would have been a good shot I just wasnt ready unfortunately. you know what I did, when I reviewed Lomo CN 100 I and a few other films I sent Lomography a link to share and I do that whenever I review one of their products so I guess they remember me. they sent me a roll of CN 800 also. great company the way they reach out to small creators also. @@OldCameras thanks my man. Hey I got a laika 3F about two months ago and I can't really put it down. When I use fine-grained film like T-Maxx and the scimitar 50 mmf2 I'm getting really the look I wanted in medium format. Really enjoying shooting it. I know you have one also. What I think is the most useful is that telescopic rangefind magnified people it's like I never miss focus if I use it properly. Whereas my wide-angle rangefinders I can't see critical focus
@OldCameras
@OldCameras 4 жыл бұрын
@@Raychristofer I had the IIIb version sadly without the telescopic viewfinder. I had a little parallax issue but once I got used to all that, it felt really nice. Mine had a canon 50mm lens on it, but it was really high quality glass.

I do think this film has its own quirky vocabulary, and is designed as an arty retro film, which you alluded to at the end of your review. I think you are spot on when you say it has its own uses, not weddings for example. It looks like an alternative cross process going muted instead of richer. . You did a pretty good job with just one roll and no prior knowledge ... Great video ! Ps. Let’s see how things pan out when you get some more, cant wait !

Hello thanks my man. I watched your Olympus trip video yesterday. Big difference in quality I noticed. And fixed 6.5 and 100 shutter makes your realize they're really modern day box cameras with flashes. Good comparison. The good thing about you getting five rolls is you can perfect it by the time you reach the last.

Raychristofer “Modern day box cameras with flashes” - you nailed it Ray! I was planning on rating Metropolis at 200 to start, but after watching your video, I’m going to start with 400 for the first roll, and then maybe 800 like you said, depending on how that first roll turns out.

Hello Raychristopher - really great work this is one of the best photography videos/demos on youtube thank you for doing it and all the hard work. I had been following it and now just ordered many rolls of Metro120 as it has just come back - did you have any comment on the brand/kit/ of C-41 line you were running at home by the way the photo of your daughter with the stop sign is just lovely portrait and wonderful memento. I mean your video so far by itself until the bicycle guy comes through could have stopped right there as a decisive moment it was twenty thousand times better already than all these other pretenders.. be well and safe cheers

Hello Harold how are you? I appreciate that much because it took me a few weeks to put this video together. The brand developing kit I got is Arista, I got mine from freestyle photo it's about $24.99 for a quart. I split the kit in two so that it lasts twice as long . I find color developing to be a little more technical than black and white because of maintaining that 102 degrees and as the developer starts to exhaust itself you never know when it is expired, there's been times I've developed rolls after weeks of not using it and the rules came out blank. Ugh

Bro as always great video! One this I realised you did not hit on...or if you did not strong enough is how the film renders the shadow when the highlights is metered for. Yes with colour film you always hear meter for the highlights, but what about saving your highlights (like movies directors will do) and see how the shadows look. Other than that you did well. You reveiws in my opinion helps alot. 👍

Actually, your initial video’s pics reminded me a bit of images I’ve gotten from Kodak 2254 film (iso 1.6). Similar, almost monochrome with a slight blue/green tint. @@Raychristofer Yes, I am following the threads here. At 66, I have been doing B&W at home since I was 15. My great grandfather was a friend of George Eastman (of Kodak) in NY. I love a big negative 645 and up. I still have a fondness for the quickness of 35 (I have a Kodak Retina IIIC which is a gem of German engineering) and Nikons. Here on the farm (old house) I have a huge darkroom and studio in what was the attic. So spoiled. I love your look of Miami and I should really get there. I presume you know the work of Constantine Manos who did "American Color" and American Color 2 in your city. Anyway nice to meet you sir. Your presentation style is great. Also, your family seems wonderfully patient as subjects. All the best!

Thank you. I was early in ordering when they announced their Kickstarter so my price was more reasonable. I'm looking forward to receiving my rolls and doing my own tests incorporating some of the knowledge from your results. One thing I do when evaluating a new type of film is to bracket the shots of the same scene from two stops under to two stops over along with using a color passport in the scene for reference so that I can see what appeals the best to me.
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking this out and the color passport is a brilliant thing to use especially on cloudy or overcast scenes for better white balance. with only 15 shots I decided to choose variety of shots over experimentation. this film behaves so differently than typical color negs im used to. I feel it might be more like digital in that maybe its better suited to metering to protect the highlights. I think this film has great potential in knowledgeable hands. let me know how you get on with it and dont be scared to shoot a review of your experience.

@@Raychristofer Actually, I've watched a few of your reviews, and I like the OCD you bring to them. Small little details, to me, are really valuable. Knowing what "might" occur takes a burden off one. I am always concerned about doing something "wrong" when I dip into new territories - maybe not with film, but for instance with processing film. Christina's shoot worked well as she used the recommended focus on bright colors (ie red, orange) as well as had a lot of strong contrasts, all of which helped. I plan on trying this film in different circumstances. Your study showed what can go wrong, Christina's shows what can go right, but between both of them, we get a very good idea of potential with this film. I noticed on your image of Coral Gables that while the sky appeared over exposed, the shadows looked really dark and blocked up. Was that the way it was exposed or is that a result of editing? Iam asking because I have some on order and I appreciate your content about this film and so far, based on your review, I will meter for it at 400 ISO, especially in sunny conditions. Thanks for sharing

Hello how are you? Thanks for checking this his out. if you overexpose this film it will quickly blow out the highlights , that plus the fact that the negatives looked over overdeveloped probably caused that issue. I bought more rolls of this film and did a follow-up review a few months ago and shot it In 35 m m at 400 ISO and the results came out perfect. definitely look back in my feed and watch that video and let me know what you think.

Interesting results. Definitely not everyday, but I see some space where to use it. It reminds me very much of early Agfacolor neu shots and of colorised old photos.

good stuff Id guess maybe the iso fluctuates because if the film has funky colour, it might be a lot more affected by the scenes colour temperature, like indoors tungsten its more 100, but outside bright cloudy to full sun it's 400+ still, interesting how just 1-2 stops overexposure gives much harsher results than regular good-ol kodak

I'm still trying to convince myself to shoot this film. Something I noticed I like when there's something red in the photo. I'm having a really hard time with this "lack of colours" and I think the red brings some pop element to it (even still being very pale), like your daughter in 08:53.

Thank you. I just got five rolls of 35 mm two weeks ago and I'm on my third roll, what I found is it's best to shoot it at 400 and not meter for the shadows. @aloyandersonphotography Is my Instagram you can see some preliminary shots if you like

@@felixifloresrodriquez3306 definitely talk to The cellar and make sure everything is operational and have them test it with a battery and make sure the lens is smooth and clear. Realistically it's not cost-effective to return something to Japan. I got a lens that the focus was grainy feeling like sand was in it and a body where the shutter curtain had a light leak. Ended up selling them on eBay for less and buying another set. Japan stuff is usually legit though.

Not that I know of but I got 5 rolls 35mm I shot one already at 400 and it looks much better. In overcast days though there's a green overcast I don't like. I find it's best in direct sun

@@me.my.son.and.i oh the decisive moment lol. Yes that's the problem with shooting manual film cameras.I was running the video camera at the time and wouldn't have time to focus and compose. That's why when I'm doing street photography I always meter first and have the shutter cocked. Hey please share your results when you get around to shooting it.
